Six months have passed since the destruction of the human colony on Keran by the alien Kreelan Empire. Earth and other human worlds band together to form the Confederation of Humanity to provide a mutual defense against the alien invaders. Unfortunately, not all human worlds want to join the Confederation. Some, like Saint Petersburg, would rather see it destroyed. With a...more

I finished Legend of the Sword, the second volume in Michael R. Hicks' In Her Name: The Last War series yesterday. The second book was as good as the first so I started on the third one and am about halfway through it at this time, but that's a review for later. I'm really enjoying this series. The Kreelan priestess Tesh-Dar is fascinating as is the entire culture that Mr. Hicks has brought forth here. Not very long after the first book ends we rejoin our characters as the crisis is picking up b...more

Another great book in the series. It didn't all the impact of the first book, but nearly so...

One thing I finally realized was nagging me about the space battles. It's doesn't feel like the speed of light is being factored in well enough. Solar systems are really big places. I mean big, big. Light takes hours to cross them. For example, Earth to Jupiter is 32 light minutes apart (or so, depending on where the planets are in their orbits and all that). So like takes 32 minutes to travel from one...more

The second book in the In Her Name series has me left in a bit of a quandary. I honestly feel like this story didn't know what it wanted to be. A cold war epic? A social commentary? A mythological & mystical journey? All of the above? There's a lot in here but it just didn't feel cohesive to me.

When reading about the spy situation on the ground with Valentina, I really liked it. When delving into the political dance between the Confederation & St. Petersburg over where the coal ash &...more

It had been a long time since I read science fiction, but I decided to expand my reading to new genres and picked up Empire (In Her Name: Redemption, #1) by Michael R. Hicks. I found it to be a wonderful blend of epic fantasy and sci fi.

So read it, loved it, and immediately bought Confederation, and Final Battle.

Michael Hicks created the world of Earth after it had taken to space, having built far-flung, loose colonies that behaved similar to our own nations here on Earth - mistrusting, not nece...more

The real rating of this book is 3.5 stars rather than four stars.

The book should be focused on Tesh-Dar, and indeed the stories about Kreelans are wonderful, and much better than their humans counterparts. The battles scenes were really well done. The characters are very well developed (and this is true for all the other books in the series). It is impossible not to like some of the Kreelans, and not to hate some of the humans; there are not good guys and bad guys, every character has his own q...more

This whole series focuses on the conflict between aliens and humans. What I liked was both viewpoints of the conflict. Also the aliens acted for logical reasons just not human logic. It's hard to write aliens as alien and not just "dressed up" humans and I think he succeeded. Story and plot were good with some memorable characters. Also different characters had different points of view on things that were never really resolved...just like real life.
What I didn't like was the books felt a little...more

I was actually not overly thrilled about the first book in this series. It was still good enough for me to want to try and read another one though. After all I really hate starting on a series and not finishing it. In this case I was rewarded with a pleasant experience.

This book was really enjoyable to read. As I mentioned in my review of the first book, there’s a lot to like in this book series. There are plenty of action, both in space and on the ground, an alien invasion of giant blue amazons...more

The second installments. Essentially a battle set in St Petersburg. Didn't quite pack the punch of the first bu I'm not sure hat is even possible as First Contact was so good. This is an awesome series. Very vivid and well structured. Characters are very interesting as is the culture of the alien race. I'm going to read the nex one now! So it must be quite good!

What a fantastic story! This book takes us back in time to when the Kreelans began their "invasion" of the human worlds but focuses on some incredible human and Kreelan characters. The insights into the Kreelan culture and ethics is detailed and imaginative. There is intense action, sad moments, fascinating details of Kreelan and human tactics, and even some Cold War style human distrust of other humans. The elements weave together to form a perfect and entertaining story that I couldn't stop re...more

Another good, intense read. Like number one in this trilogy, basically one long battle scene.... It's really good stuff, but one long battle scene will never get five stars from me. Just saying....

Another great book in the In Her Name: The Last War series! This book further makes the reader feel that there really is no "good" side or "bad" side. While the Kreelans are the ones attacking the Human sphere, to their minds they have very valid reasons to do so. I particularly loved the fleshed out story of Tesh'Dar and really grew to love Li'ara Zhurah. With all of the in fighting that the humans were having in this book I actually found myself rooting for the Kreelans on several occasions. W...more

not as good as the first book of this trilogy, but a good continuation. like others that have reviewed this book, i too was confused as to where the author was headed at times. the confusion is why i rated 3 out of 5.

I'm loving everything about this storyline. Sad to see some of the characters die. Can't wait to see where this is heading. Just bought book 3.

Not quite as fast paced as the first book but still a good read.

Another great book in this series, I just devoured this.
Dustin
Another fantastic entry in the series.

The second book of the In Her Name trilogy continues the confrontation between the human settled space and the invading Kreelan Empire. Plenty of space battles and conflict as the two sides battle over the planet of St. Petersburg settled by old earth Russians which left the human consortium force battling both the Kreelans and the St. Petersburg forces. I will be picking up the next book soon to continue the story.

I am so curious about the Kreelans!! I am really enjoying this story.

Fun book, but it dragged a bit in the middle and was not well-edited. Good enough to entice me to finish the series, though.

Born in 1963, Michael Hicks grew up in the age of the Apollo program and spent his youth glued to the television watching the original Star Trek series and other science fiction movies, which continues to be a source of entertainment and inspiration. Having spent the majority of his life as a voracious reader, he has been heavily influenced by writers ranging from Robert Heinlein to David Weber, a...more
