A romantic and emotional journey of an abused woman and her path towards healing - all within a vampire urban fantasy.
Synopsis: Set in a present day Los Angeles, a young woman named Serenity is in a difficult and very abusive marriage. Her self esteem is poor and she questions whether she deserves her nightly beatings and emotional abuse from her creepy and jobless husband.
When she stumbles upon a very compelling and gorgeous...more
I really enjoyed the suspenseful book, Alone. It kept me turning pages and sitting on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book!
I started out feeling sorry for Serenity in all that she went through and it was so good to see her slowly get her strength back and reclaim her life as the book went on. It was also completely refreshing to watch as Serenity saved herself! Her realizations about saving herself and forming a plan.

I'm not sure where I found this book, but I am so glad that I did. Marissa Farrar is a new author for me, and I enjoyed her writing style immensely.
"Alone" deals with a very sensitive subject, Domestic Violence. Something I know a thing or two about and I have to take my hat off to Marissa for showing the emotion and the details of a terrible subject off in a way that was so realistic. People find the topic of Domestic Violence uncomfortable and don't want to read or hear about it, yet if they...more

I sat down to read this book, needing a change of pace, something to read just for fun, and that is exactly what I got. I got a novel that I was not able to put down, that was thoroughly enjoyable, and that I loved every minute of reading. I found the characters believable, the storyline enjoyable, and really just could not walk away from this one.

It's hard to write a review for this book because of the sensitive nature of some of the issues brought forth.
First and foremost, let me say that abusive relationships whether physical or mental are so utterly wrong and discusting I really don't know where to begin. The fact that a person could do that to another and for the most part, get away with it is disturbing. The worst part is seeing the women in these relationships all downtrodden or acting as though nothing is wrong, when clearly some...more

Serenity is young, married, beautiful and a victim of domestic abuse. No one knows as her husband is clever where he strikes her and she's used to hiding it from everyone around her.
For too long she'd been kept under the thumb and when she's fired the balance is tipped and a gorgeous stranger steps out of the shadows to help her.
The chance meeting with this man plays on her mind but what are the chances she'll meet him again?
Sebastian has been a vampire a long time and his existence is a sad an...more

What I Liked: Alone deals with the difficult and harsh reality of a violent marriage. Even though it made me uncomfortable at times, I appreciated the realistic storytelling of domestic violence. Since I've had experience with that myself, it felt realistic. Sometimes it seems melodramatic when Jackson is abusing her, but that kind of situation IS melodramatic when you're living in. I think she captured the thoughts going on in Serenity's head perfectly.

Serenity Series Book 1
I bought this book after reading The Vengeful Vampire, the prequel to this book, because I wanted to know more about Sebastian and see where becoming a vampire would take him.
Although the reader may think they know where this book is going, they are going to be surprised with some of the twists and turns. Things couldn’t get much worse for Serenity, life throws one thing after another at her and she has no one to turn to. When she meets Sebastian, she...more

This was a hopelessly depressing romance… and I use the word romance in its loosest sense.
This story made me feel like an oppressive millstone has been placed around my neck by the time I reached the words, “T-H-E-E-N-D.” I’m sorry, but when I read a romance I want a “happily-ever-after-it-all-works-out-in-the-end” kind of story. I do not want to read a story that makes me want to step in front of a bus to end it all. That’s really what you got with this story.

I made it a couple hundred pages and just could not go any further. I knew the story touched on abusive relationships, but I just didn't find Serenity's character believable or sympathetic. She starts out injured and terrified and just because she meets a hot stranger (in an alley, and she's all forward and mouthy with him)she's suddenly crystal clear on her husband's abuse. Not that she's leaving, she just thinks resentful thoughts. Then when the alley guy shows up, she starts begging him to ta...more

This was a really quick read for me. It was easy to get engrossed in this book and I found myself on edge when Serenity dealt with her abusive husband. Marissa Farrar did a great job depicting the reality of abusive relationships in this novel. I was truly scared for Serenity's life.

1st line in the book---> “The day Serenity Hathaway came to view as the lowest point in her life, also turned out to be the day everything changed.”
Review:
**3.5 Stars**
Alone was a very different story from the ones I usually read. I had no idea what to expect. The first thing that came to me was surprise. I never expected that the theme would be about the heroine's struggle with Domestic Violence and how she was able to live through it.

I really enjoyed this little Vampire Tale. It had more complex characters than is true of your average paranormal romance, I guess because it really was more than a romance, and the story went in some unexpected directions. Sebastion and Serenity came with heart-breaking histories, and one can only hope that the future books might hold good things in store for them and that they will find what, so far, life has denied them. I have a few bones to pick about some details in the story, but I enjoye...more

The beginning of this story unnerved me. Domestic violence SHOULD unnerve you, but this introduction and the helplessness (the inability to help oneself) seemed to resonate in my head. I literally HAD to continue reading just so I would get past it. Thank God, she got past it.

For a moment it morphed into a classic vamp storyline: I have never even tasted your lips and yet I love you, will give my life for you, must have you.

I was about halfway through the book at my last post, very pleased, and did not want to put it down! I do have to say this is not a happy book or a book with ironic humor; however, while at times dark it is a powerful read. Alone is a paranormal romance with a human woman and vampire with a bit of new take on vampires. The book also deals with the significant issue of spousal abuse. It is a story that runs a gambit of emotions from deep despair to the triumph of coming into one's own, realizing...more
Alone is nice easy read. There is nothing in Alone to have to make to think to hard or pull out a dictionary to understand what it means. The story is in present day and with real present day problems that exist. If you have a problem reading about spousal abuse then this book is not for you. There is a great part of the book based on past incidents and new ones of course. I don't think its too major that it makes you cringe but I did get upset when reading it.

A woman's journey in getting back her life and finding the courage to stop the cycle of abuse she was forced to endure. The circumstances might not be ideal but it doesn't take away the fact that Serenity decided that there's more to life than being tied to her pig of a husband. And succeeded.

I enjoyed "Alone" which did have the flavor of an adult "Twilight" and I think adult fans of "Twilight" would also enjoy this book. It's a romance/horror novel where a woman who's a victim of domestic abuse, encounters a vampire, and the two fall in love. The main character, Serenity, is able to overcome her mortal issues, only to dive into a world full of vampiric intrigue...and with that a load of additional problems. The book is well-constructed with well-fleshed out characters. This is the f...more
FULL DISCLOSURE: I received my copy from the author. Y'know, I had some reservations about this as I'm really not a big fan of romance stories. They make my inner 12 year quiver. However, this was a really well done girl meets vampire story. The main character, Serenity (love the name) is an abused woman who falls in love with a vampire named Sebastian. Sebastian has his own baggage in the form of a stalker vampire Madeleine. The best elements of the story were the portrayal of a battered woman...more
This was a slightly different twist to a vampire story.
The story was well-written and kept the reader's interest fairly well.
The profanity was annoying as well as an unneeded sexual situation.
The story would have been much better without them.
The author ended the story well yet left the reader with the unfulfilled need to move onto the next book in the series.
The original situation addressed is very real and in continual need of being addressed.

Since the age of eighteen, Serenity Hathaway's life has been a living hell. Her husband is nothing but abusive and repeatedly uses her misgiving's as a way of making her compliant to his wishes. She's tried to be helpful, to be understanding in the face of such adversity. Yet every bone in her body cries out against the injustices Jackson has committed against her.

Ok so this is a 'romance' about a lady in an abusive relationship she 'can't' leave....... she meets a vampire yadda yadda yadda...... things happen causing their relationship danger and ends up causing her to have to try and save the love of her life's life.......
Ummmmmmmmmmm not sure how much of a romance it is when I was so agitated by the end I was glad it was over..... not sure if I would say it was enjoyable when I was glad it was over and I didn't have to suffer the grief it caused me.......more

Alone was recommended to me and I've been meaning to read it for ages - I'm glad I finally got around to it. I really felt for Serenity and all she endured. The characters seemed so real that I got caught up in each situation. Marissa Farrar is a fantastic storyteller and I was totally immersed in the novel from beginning to end. Plus Sebastian is smoking hot! I've read quite a few vampire series and this stands up there with the best of them. Really excited to have found a great new series to g...more
SO CLICHE. So BORING. The author provides you with this weak, wimpy heroine and then makes several attempts to have her overcome her self doubts and grow strong and courageous... but really, Serenity came across to me as a sniveling whiner whose constant state of terror is tiresome to read about. I realize that she was in an abusive relationship and it damaged her severely. But Mary-Sue Sebastian (cough coughEdwardcough cough) should not be the answer to her problems. Don't read this book if you...more
Writing a story about domestic violence cannot have been easy for the author and despite not being able to relate to how that feels to go through, I was near tears of concern for Serenity. How she believed it was all her fault and how I was urging her out of the door. I found I was turning the pages quicker and quicker wanting to know how she was.

Serenity Hathaway has no reason to celebrate life, coasting between cruel indifference at the office and violence at home. The opening pages of ALONE plunge us straight into the hell of this young woman's existence, revealing her self-doubt and plummeting despair.

WELL, IT WAS BETTER THAN WHAT I EXPECTED. IT WAS ABOUT A GOOD LOOKING VAMPIRE NAMED SEBASTIAN WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH A HUMAN PERSON, BUT COULDN'T DO A THING BECAUSE SEBASTIAN HAD TO STAY IN THE DARK AMD SERENITY WAS HUMAN, BUT I DIDNOT LIKE THE END. I KKNEW THAT SERENITY WOULD END UP WITH THE DETECTIVE THAT WAS CHECKING OUT HER HUSBAND WHO VANISHED. BUT I HVE A FUNNY FEELING THAT SERENITY WILL END UP PREGNANT AND HAVE A BABY BY SEBASTIAN. NOW THAT WOULD BE A GOOD START OF A NEW BOOK.
A ver...

I loved this book. I have always stuck to the more well known authors like Charlaine Harris and Stefanie Meyers- But I came across this on my Nook as I was searching for something to read. I was pleasantly surprised! I thought it was well written. Great details. I am am officially a fan! I read the entire book in less than 6 hours. The ending was a big change but not a bad one.
