Verdict: A tightrope walk of silly and sinister so English it can turn cookies into biscuits and peas to mush.

Comics, cartoons, funnies, call ‘em what you like but there is a warm nest in my heart for them. FoxTrot, Get Fuzzy, Dilbert, and Pearls Before Swine are just a few of the bodies of work I consider genius. Some comics, like Peanuts or Calvin and Hobbes, even manage to transcend the medium. They are my poetry. For Schultz and Watterson I would gladly sacrifice Yeats and Wordsworth. Back h

Ronald William Fordham Searle, CBE, RDI, is an influential English artist and cartoonist. Best known as the creator of St Trinian's School (the subject of several books and seven full-length films). He is also the co-author (with Geoffrey Willans) of the Molesworth series.
