As the fourth book in the V series, “The V in Virtue” continues the story of Vic Braunson and partner Matt diLorenzo, but it also departs a bit from the rest of the series. The premise of all books featuring these characters is that Vic gains superpowers from Matt during sex, and each position imparts a different special, yet often annoying and very inconvenient, ability. Vic never knows quite what he’s going to get, but he wouldn’t change anything because having Matt in his life is the most important thing.

This story focuses on the week between Christmas and New Year’s, a week when Vic and Matt have traditionally sworn off all intercourse. It’s a week for Vic to not have to worry about unexpected powers, to be normal in some sense of the word, and provide both men an intense buildup to their New Year’s celebration of the first time they were together. Though both men agree on no sex for the week, it’s definitely a lot easier said than done.

“The V in Virtue” is a great addition to the Vic and Matt series, and fans that have read the short story “Take it Outside” will recognize a similarity as “The V in Virtue” is a rewrite and expansion of that short story. There is not much talk about superpowers in this story, so what it focuses on instead is the connection that exists between the men themselves. Vic and Matt have a relationship based on a deep love for one another, and that’s the gem within this tale. There are lots of steamy parts as the men celebrate one last time before their week-long sabbatical, and then try to coerce one another into cheating. Intermixed with the sexy scenes are a lot of sweetly romantic moments that really shine and make the story that much more enjoyable.

There has been so much growth and development throughout the V series, and the Vic and Matt series overall, and Snyder doesn’t disappoint in this story. These characters are always well fleshed out, and readers that aren’t familiar with the previous stories will still be able to enjoy it, though they will miss out slightly on the integration of the superpowers which provides additional charm and humor to other stories. Not to say that this story is completely lacking in superpower aftermath, but it’s not a key part of the central plot. Fans will absolutely want to read this story, and won’t be disappointed.

One of the best lines of the whole story comes near the very beginning, and is a description of the love that exists between Vic and Matt. This line struck a very strong chord with me, and I think it’s one of the best I’ve read in a very long time. It’s one sample of the wonderful writing from Snyder and the connection between Vic and Matt that’s been built up over numerous stories and novels. “They only had so many hours in a day, so many days in a year, so many years in a lifetime, to love each other. It wasn’t enough. It would never be enough. He wanted to rewind time, meet Vic sooner, love him forever. Was that too much to ask?”(less)
