Yerma (meaning 'Barren') is one of three tragic plays about peasants and rural life that make up Lorca's 'rural trilogy'.
It is possibly Lorca's harshest play following a woman's Herculean
struggle against the curse of infertility. The woman's barrenness
becomes a metaphor for her marriage in a traditional society that
denies women sexual or social equality. Her desperate desi...more

Yerma is a fantastic book, and heartbreakingly tragic. In the middle of the play, an old woman tells Yerma, an honorable and conservative woman living in a rural agricultural community, that "The important thing in life is to let the years carry us along." Unfortunately for Yerma, this is something that the conflict she feels between her desire to fulfill society's expectations and her own desire for a child, and her husbands desire to remain childless and comfortable, makes impossible for her....more

This was a fast read. it was interesting to see a husband and wife dynamic where the wife is starting to fight for her freedom. Also the meaning of the title in refernece to the land and to the main character was interesting to think about.

Somehow, the only positive aspect I can find in this repetitive and "oh this is why classics are not popular" dramatic work is its beautiful prose. Yet somehow that seems like a flaw when you think that people are supposed to act and look natural with the poetic dialogue.

Una historia cruel....

No te pude ver
cuando eras soltera,

mas de casada te encontraré.

No te pude ver

cuando eras soltera.

Te desnudaré,

casada y romera,

cuando en lo oscuro las doce den.

This one is hard to read. If you've ever pined for a baby, this is going to call close to home. Still, is marvelous. Every Spanish speaker should read all of Lorca's master pieces.

An absolutely beautiful play, concerned with a central female character who is yearning for a child which she canot concieve.

There is a mix of beautiful language and poetry, and the sybolism used is incredible.

The only thing is not being able to read spanish, I think takes away from it somewhat, as I know that it SOUNDS way better in Spanish, and I think would be better.

It would almost be worth learning Spanish just for Lorca I think!

A very old play that reminded me of The Wicker Man (old version, lots of Pagan imagery and a good story line, the purpose of reproduction and the role of women in society. Looking forward to studying it in my Acting 2 lessons :)

I absolutely LOVED this work by Lorca! Definetly one of his best works!

Lorca’s drama is a combination of Manuel Machado (Writer), Juan Gris (Pianter) and Manuel de Falla (Magnificent musicion).
Lorca's trilogy is a complex of Andalucian tragedies, mixed with wine and blood.

Simplemente, me encantó.

I loved this play. Lorca conveys Yerma's desire for a child so masterfully that it's palpable. I was really invested in this story, and I loved that Lorca took it somewhere that I wasn't expecting by the end of the play.

Changing my rating for this one to 3 stars instead of two. The main reason is because I have to write a spanish paper about it so after doing a lot of research, i have more of an appreciation for it.

It never ceases to amaze me how well Lorca was able to blend his lyrical poetry with the dramatic form. The struggle of Yerma is one that continues to have implications in today's modern household.

Born in Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, Spain, June 5,1898; died near Granada, August 19,1936, García Lorca is Spain's most deeply appreciated and highly revered poet and dramatist. His murder by the Nationalists at the start of the Spanish civil war brought sudden international fame, accompanied by an excess of political rhetoric which led a later generation to question his merits; after the inevitable...more
