I've wanted to be a witch forever. Long before anyone uttered the words Harry & Potter. You see, there was this awesome movie called Teen Witch. Have you seen it? Well the girl finds out she is witch, turns her little brother into a dog, gets to meet a famous singer AND snags the most popular boy at school. All because she had magical powers. I so wanted to be a witch.

Perhaps that is why I loved this book so much, or maybe it's because Hex Hall is a laugh-out-load, fast paced and easy read. More...

The cover of this book is oddly deceiving. When I first looked at it, I wasn't sure if the book would be for me. As it looked a little bit too YA for my taste. How could I be so wrong?

This book is hilarious! Full on, laugh out loud funny. It's like a cross between Harry Potter and Mean Girls meets Sabrina.

Sophie is a witch. Having never met her father, she has been raised by her human mother and has had no magical education. But when More...

OK, I originally gave this 3.5 stars.. but I have decided just to give it 4 stars.

“I’m experiencing some teenage angst, Mrs Casnoff,” I answered. “I need to, like, write it in my journal or something.”

Initial Final Page Thoughts.
Wow, I read that book in about five hours…. I probably should get some food. Laughter is the only sustenance I need.

Hex Hall is a delightfully entertaining and fun read. After the intensity of Shatter Me, reading this book was a perfect choice to slowly return me to the land of »normal«. But that's not to say that Hex Hall is all laughs and fun. There were some pretty intense and scary moments in this book too, but the witty banter is what really stuck with me.

I laughed out loud many times at Sophie's humorous remarks. She's very easy to like and care about. What I love the most about her is how she doesn't More...

I've had my eye on this book since first seeing it in the First Reads list, but I didn't buy it right away. Something about the cover seemed too cute, and I didn't want to shell out the money for a hardcover only to be disappointed.

But then Trin read it and gave it a great review.

As Trin said, it's novels like this one that I look for when reading YA fiction. It's a great story, with fun characters, and it was funny. Hawkins is a gifted writer that knows when to be absurd and when to be serious. More...

Summary:

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

Hex Hall wasn’t quite Hexcellent, but was certainly enjoyable!
(...And lovely cover ^_^)

To be precise: this book is a 4 star for execution, meaning it is fast paced, interesting, decently written.
It is a 1 star for originality though, being a total copy of Evernight in my opinion. Could it be any more obvious? While reading I had already started to think that I exactly pictured Hex Hall exactly like Evernight school, then thought well at least Sophie is a witch not a vampire like Bianca and Lucas... wait, no it's Archer and he is a bloody HUNTER too!! No way. I wanted to throw the More...

This was a book that I was highly anticipating even before I knew what it was about. I loved the title and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I finally got my copy. I devoured it in about a day, and absolutely loved it.

Hex Hall was an exciting read with a mystery involved. It also has a wonderful "vampire, witches and werewolves oh my" factor, faeries too. Ms. Hawkins has created a fun, and vibrant world. The twists and turns of the story will keep your turning the page. There was a bit of a c More...

Hex Hall

Four Stars: I recommend this book, it is a fun, quick, pleasant story.

Hex Hall is a nice book for a light, relaxing read. It focuses on a young sixteen year old witch named Sophie as she begins her education at Hecate Hall. Hex Hall, as the students affectionately call it, is not your ordinary school. Instead it is a school populated with an assortment of witches, warlocks, werewolves, shape-shifters, faeries, a few ghosts and one vampire. Set in a strange old house in Georgia, Hex Hall More...

Fun! This book really grew on me. It took several tries to get past the first couple of chapters, but once Sophie finally gets settled in at Hex Hall things start moving along. The witchy battles are pretty cool, there's good build-up of the mystique behind the school and behind Sophie's past and powers, and the author does a nice job with creating a variety of different characters with distinctive voices. I especially liked BFF Jenna and the super cute and witty Archer, and Sophie herself turns More...

I love a book that can make me laugh. Although I am not feeling the Team Archer vibe after this book I will say that as far as romance this series has potential. The characters are all entertaining and keep you guessing. Best "witch" book I've read in awhile.

Well this was a fun read. I started it on the bus and finished it that day on the way home. It was quick and painless. Good stuff!

But that’s all it was. It was a one-time thing. I enjoyed it very much as long as it lasted. However, it didn’t impress me nor did it leave me with anything to ponder.

Wow I sound bitter…and cranky. Someone missed their nap-time, BIG TIME. I just feel that this book could have been a whole lot better. Hawkins has already proved herself to be a decent novelist [the wri More...

This book's a little like Harry Potter meets Evernight.
And refuses Vampire Academy.
I mean, the little witch going to a school full of supernatural beings. And ghosts strolling around. Harry Potter is the first thing that came into my mind.
Then after a while the differences started showing up: there’s not only witches and warlocks at Hecate, but also faeries and werewolves and shapeshifters. (and vampires?)
Plus, the plot is totally different and the dangers Sophie has to face are outside the sch More...

Why, oh why haven’t I read this book before?

It’s no secret that I’m very finicky when it comes to my paranormal reading choices. I find a lot of them to be pretty similar, especially when it comes to the lovey part of the story, but Hex Hall isn’t one of those copycats. I loved the originality of this story. Yeah, there’s a boarding school where paranormal creatures go, but that’s really where any similarities with other paranormals stop.

I loved all the mythology (that’s probably not the right More...

One word defination: Fun

Hex Hall is a fun, enjoyable and simple read. For a debut novel, which IMO doesn't always turn out well, Rachel Hawkins left a great simple, memorable laughs and never-ending giggles to my face after reading it. She totally nailed it, hit the bull's eye and found the reader's soft spot. I'm breathless. It wasn't that edge-of-you-seat, R-rated book, but the joy it brings to the reader is beyond words.

RATING: 4.5 Out Of 5

So let’s just say that any book that includes star wars, Looney tunes, harry potter, Buffy and other pop culture references, sounds good to me!

Not only that but this book was incredibly funny. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, more for the humour than the story, though that was very good too. So in short this book is about paranormals pretty much, although in this novel they are referred to as 'prodigium' and there is an ancient secret society known as L'Occhio di Dio (The Eye More...

HEX HALL was a fantastic, mindless read that took my mind off of pressing issues that I'd rather not discuss. :)
Meanwhile, back at the ranch . . .
The first half of HEX HALL was the kind of book you want to read at the beach. The second half was the kind of book that made your heart pound and your palms sweat, but you didn't care because your eyes were glued to the pages and three hours could've passed while you were immersed within the pages.
It was that good.

Ok, I CANNOT believe this is a debut novel! It was so funny, interesting, and suspenseful. It makes me wonder why, after all the good reviews I've read about this book, I didn't read it sooner.

The world of Prodigium was very entertaining to read about, from the werewolves to the faeries, to the vampires to the shapeshifters. And then, of course, witches. The main character, Sophie, was witty, sarcastic, and pretty refreshing. And I'm not just saying that because she's a witch. The situations she More...

3.5 stars as whole. The first half was entertaining but nothing exceptional. I decided to round up and give it a 4 star rating because the last 50 pages were a lot of fun and quite unexpected.

In lieu of a normal review, I have decided to veer from my usual wordy analysis of the book and instead leave you with some of my favorite passages :

"The guy next to her, he's the vamp," Jenna said through a mouthful of pie. She pointed to a really good looking guy in his thirties with black curly hair. "L More...

Okay, if I could -- I would give this book 3.5 stars. It's not a bad read, not at all, but it's one that promises more comedy and satire than actual drama and suspense. I'm going to be honest: it's actually a bit like The Princess Diaries (KINDA) with a supernatural twist. This is also one of those books that SCREAMS movie tie-in somewhere down the road. It's actually one of those books that you could imagine would be really humorous as a movie (particularly the opening scene at the dance with S More...

My main impression from the book is that it's meant for the very bottom of the age spectrum it's being marketed for. I'd say 10-14 years old because the writing is extremely simplistic. Of course, there's a lot of dead teenagers flying around so it's a weird mix of older, more mature themes and fairly immature writing. The world building is so-so. There wasn't a lot of depth here despite being charming in a general kind of way. Female Harry Potter, Sophie Mercer is not, but still fanatic Potter More...

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins is a funny and humorous book with a sudden twist that is entirely different from the norm of YA books. The story itself is about a teenage 'witch' named, Sophie Mercer, who gets into all kinds of trouble on her first day at the reformation school for the unnatural beings, called Hecate Hall. I absolutely love how Sophie's character is so witty, sarcastic, and she's not afraid to say what she thinks without being too straightforward. One her first day, she meets her cru More...

Hilarious. This book was just, well, hilarious. I loved the story of girl going to boarding school for supernatural creatures, falling in love, and then being all badass and fighting off villain. Yeah it might be a little cliche, but oh well this was a really great book. I was laughing during every chapter and I could relate to the main character, Sophie, in so many ways.
