Being a fan of Jules Verne, of course I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It definitely wasn't the science fiction genre adventure such as 20,000 Leagues or Journey to the Centre of the Earth, but this was more one of pure adventure, determination, daring, one of those more true to life tales that you just must keep reading since you are constantly left wondering what will happen next.

I'll recommend 'Michael Strogoff' to all Verne fans or anyone just looking for an old fashion adventure...

The review from afar – No. 23

Re-revised forward to these overseas reviews:
Since emulating a yo-yo, I continue to rely on the old-style Kindle 3G for any non-technical reading. I tip my hat to the fine folks at Project Gutenberg: virtually every title I have or will be reading in the near future comes from them.

Michael Strogoff Or, the Courier of the Czar is an adventure tale that has no elements of fantastic or scientific fiction. Since my previous familiarity with Jules Verne was almost only th
Straight adventure novel, no science fiction. Easily one of Verne's better books, this is an underappreciated gem. Nadya, the 'damsel in distress' is a strong female character. The stalwart Michael must deliver a message from the czar to the governor of Siberia, about treachery afoot. He journeys through hostile Central Asian territory and is tortured. This is what we used to call strictly a "boy's book" and now, would possibly be considered a Young Adult novel. I read this many, many years ago, ...more

Michael Strogoff a courier in the Czar's service,is sent as an secret agent to Siberia. He will deliver a vital message to the Emperor's brother. Hopefully the letter will prevent a rebellion from spreading in that province.Along the road he encounters two suspicious journalists (French and British of course). A nice straightforward adventure novel, as Michael on a mission for the Czar has to basically travel from one end of Russia to the other before a traitor can give the enemy armies vital information.

Michael is stoic to the point of having one facial expression, but he is determined, manly and good to his mother. His love interest is treated as a bit of a damsel, but proves to be every bit as tough as her boyfriend.

What keeps this book from sinking under it's own weight is the two bickering report

MICHAEL STROGOFF, or, the Courier of the Czar. (1876). Jules Verne. ***
Jules Verne (1828-1905) wrote a lot more than science fiction, as we now call the genre that he co-invented with H. G. Wells. This novel was an example of his forays into the world of the action/adventure story. It’s a tale of a mission undertaken by its hero to reach an outlying post in Siberia and deliver from the Czar of the Russias. When the telegraph line is cut between Moscow and Irkutz, the Czar looks for another way

This is the second time I read this book, and this is the second time I liked it. It has a corageuos hero, a noble heroine, and a cruel villain. The sad part is, I just discovered that my edition is a short one, so I hope to re-read it a third time in a better one, hopefully in French, to grasp entirely Verne's words.

Who knew that Jules Verne also wrote historical fiction?!? I just found this out when I stumbled over this fabulous book. If you are a Jules Verne fan then you will enjoy this character driven book that gives lots of information on the cultures of people living in Russia during the time of the Tzars.--Judy

Michael Strogoff is not in the "first tier" of Jules Verne novels, and that's a real pity.

It's a strong story, set in Imperial Russia. The Czar (played in my mind by Patrick Stewart) is told rebels are attacking Siberia and his brother the Grand Duke is going to be killed by a spy.

Since the telegraph is down, the Czar sends a courier, Michael Strogoff (played by a younger Liam Neeson or Daniel Craig -- let's go with Channing Tatum) to Irkutsk. Strogoff is a "B.A.M.F" of the highest order and fa
The odd thing about reading this book is the feeling that you're reading a rip off, or generously, a novel heavily influenced by the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Much of Burroughs' style and concepts (the description of the heroes and villains, the romance, the epic journey of the hero to reach a goal to foil the plans of the antagonists of the story) are present here. But it reads like a watered down ERB book. What's odd about that is "Michael Strogoff" came first. It was published some 36 pr ...more
This is one of the better Verne novels I have read in my current reading of a lot of lessser Verne. It has no sf element, being a straight adventure movel. Proof that, even without the sci-, Jules Verne wrote some pretty fine -fi. Although "Michael Strogoff" comes off, perhaps, a bit dated to the modern reader, it's hard to find much at fault in this bracing tale of Czarist Russia. Without giving anything away, Verne should be lauded for his willingness to weave real tragedy, hardship, and ugliness into his story. This uncompromising ethos adds pungent spice to a story which might have been rendered in far more saccharine flavors. Verne keeps us on ...more
The most funny thing about the book is the image of a Russian. I can't say that this novel is filled with sophisticated metaphors or other ways to enrich authors language, On the contrary, the whole story is told from the point of view of simple moujik and so, is quite plain, however a bit dramatic and artificial. I loved it. I believe that for children up to 13 it could be interesting to read about adventures of such a loyal, obedient, strong-willed person as Michel Strogoff. Despite the fact t ...more

The 1876 equivalent of an adrenaline-fuelled summer blockbuster super-spy, action-adventure film. Strogoff will have to fight armies, nature and an evil nemesis to try and save mother Russia. All the characters are easy-to-digest caricatures including a comedy double-act of foreign reporters - a Frenchman and a more formal Englishman. It was soon adapted into a play which, when it played in Paris, portrayed the English journalist as a buffoon; and when it transferred to London in March 1881 it w ...more

It is the 19th century. Michael Strogoff is a courier for the Czar, and is tasked with bringing a letter to the Czar's brother in Siberia. This is a very long journey, and there is peril, as there have been uprisings along the way. Michael is travelling under a pseudonym.

It was ok. I found sections more interesting that included the women characters in the book: Nadia, who Micheal meets part-way; she is also travelling to Siberia; and his mother, who he is supposed to avoid, so as not to reveal

That was my first reaction when I read it as a young girl, and it hasn't changed!

First you have Michael Strogoff himself. He is strong, masculine, and steadfast in a way that gives you a thrill! While his mental and physical strength could have made him a cold and mask-faced character, I did not find him so. His intense love for his mother, his pity for an unprotected young girl, and the agonized moments when his heart bids him to desert his mission only create admiration for the fact

Jules Gabriel Verne was a French author who pioneered the genre of science-fiction. He is best known for his novels "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873).

Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before navigable aircraft and practical submarines were invented, and before any means of spa
