As I had not yet heard of Katie Salidas, when asked to review Immortalis Carpe Noctem, I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, after this first taste, I am certain we shall be hearing much more about Katie and her talents! After experiencing the “turning” through the eyes of a newborn vampire in Immortalis Carpe Noctem, it is a certainty that readers will be lined up for the next adventure in Immortalis: Hunters & Prey coming in 2011.

Immortalis Carpe Noctem was a dark introduction into the life and struggles of twenty-five year old, Alyssa. While walking home one night she's brutally attacked and on the verge of death when Lysander saves her.
Lysander is an ancient vampire and he saves her by turning her. He "knew she was far too injured to survive if {he} left her. {His} sloth in attacking [the men that attacked her] would be the cause of her innocent death, and {he} couldn't allow it. She did not deserve death, so {he} gra...more

I like the more gritty vampire tales like this one. There is a price, an internal conflict among other life changes, to have to live with. Ms. Salidas created this aspect of the vampire world very well. The heroine had no easy go of it. She really had to struggle to adapt to her new life and let go of the old one.
The lore was well thought out, and I appreciated the old Catholic connection (quite inventive). Ms. Salidas creates a great mix of vampire mythology, a wonderful balance between the con...more

Immortalis Carpe Noctem is the first book in a new series of dark and sexy vampire stories set in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. Newbie vampire Alyssa never asked for this life, but now it's all she has. The twenty-five year old is rescued from death after a brutal attack by an unlikely hero, Lysander, a cold and aloof vampire. She's barely cut her teeth before she becomes a target of Lysander’s estranged ma...more

If some one asked me to describe this story in one word it would be ‘Beautiful’. Katie Salidas has beautifully crafted a vampire story. From the very first chapter, the action begins and draws you in. You feel all the emotions Alyssa; a young college student is going through as she is attacked while walking alone one night. She can’t protect herself from her attackers and knows this will be her last night on this earth.

Although the character of Alyssa is twenty-five, this story reads like a season of some overly-wrought teen melodrama. It has all the classic elements of a vampire story... thirst, ruling bodies, misunderstanding newborn, the doe-eyed betrayer and the human hunters.
Alyssa is a character that I wanted to like. For me she clings to her humanity for too long. Her relationship with Lysander feels ambiguous at best. Even with the story in first person point of view, I’m not sure if it’s her feels or...more

I am going to review this as a series instead of three separate books. Sometimes a vampire book can seem the same after reading so many, and lately I have had the pleasure of reading some wonderful vampire stories that have put an original twist to them. As with this series I am happy to say this series has that something different that I am always looking for in a great book.

Saved by a vampire, but turned into one? Is that really salvation?
I bet you already read it before, as vampires are a mainstream that keeps going on and on, but I like the way this vampire story was conducted. Alyssa is the human turned into vamp in this story, with all conflicts about needing to feed from people. No, Salidas mythology doesn’t have the alternative of feeding on animals, which I really liked. I hate when everything seems to mo...more

I was surprised that I hadn't heard of this author after I read this novel. The writing is clear and descriptive, filled with foreshadowing and foreboding. The characters are well-developed and the main character is fun and likable.

What happens when a vampire saves your life during a near brutal almost rape and turns you? How would you cope with needing, no, thirsting for blood all the time? Even if you don't want to kill another human being to obtain that blood?
This is what happens to Alyssa. She is stood up by her best friend late one night so decides to walk home alone. She is accosted by two unsavoury characters who nearly kill and rape her. Instead, they are killed and she is saved by an ancient vampire, Lysander. Aga...more

Immortalis Carpe Noctem is the first in a series of books about a newly turned vampire (vampiress?) named Alyssa. After a brutal attack, she is saved by an ancient vampire called Lysander. Her turns her into an immortal blood sucker and thus she begins to learn the trials and tribulations of being a vampire. The story is well written and kept me interested as it went along. The story is written in first person and the author notes the character’s thoughts throughout the entire story. For me, th...more
If you can get past the poor grammar and awkward dialogue, you might actually enjoy this one. I found it entertaining and occasionally even poignant.
The main character, Alyssa, was a little grating at times. While I admired her stubbornness in some instances, at other times it seemed out of place and unnatural, like the author decided that "stubborn" was a primary trait of Alyssa and so felt obligated to make sure she demonstrated this characteristic at least twice in every chapter, even if it t...more

My only exposure to a vampire novels has been the "Twilight" series, so I'm coming from a "newborn" point of view. I have never read an adult novel up to this point - not even "Dracula" (does the movie count?)
"Immortalis Carpe Noctum" held me captive from the first page. Written in first person, it allowed me to climb inside Alyssa's head and experience her struggles and disappointments, thoughts and fears and her heartache of never being able to return to her life. All of this on top of her inn...more

mmortalis: Carpe Noctem by Katie Salidas was a fantastic read! If you have ever wondered what going through the change to become an immortal was like, you will be enthralled with this title.
Alyssa was awaiting the arrival of her best friend Fallon, where they meet every night at the Cafe’ Copioh. When Fallon calls to say she won’t be able to make it to the Cafe’, Alyssa leaves for home.

I picked up this book because I loved Twilight but wanted a more “adult” read, and I got just what I asked for! It took me to a dark, gritty place within few flips of the pages and I was hooked.

You don't need to be a fan of the vampire genre to appreciate what Immortalis: Carpe Noctem has to offer. We all know about about the successes of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, but Immortalis ups the ante by reminding us that those books are for "young adults" and this is for the critical reader who isn't interested in being coddled.

Well... I am not sure what to make of this one. I feel like I would have enjoyed it more a few years ago before being introduced to so many other series. It's got to be hard to come up with new concepts, but somehow many paranormal writers pull it off everyday. I don't consider this one a new niche but it has something going for it...I'm just not sure what it is.

Living in Southern California, I take many trips to lovely Las Vegas. After reading this book, I now know why I always hate going down by the Stratosphere. It's a freaking vampire hunting ground!!!
Katie Salidas takes us through Alyssa's awakening as a vampire. She never asked for her new immortal life, but she didn't want to die either. Alyssa must find a way to accept her new life and it's new restrictions while saying goodbye to what she had know the twenty five years before. It isn't always e...more

I have to say that I really enjoyed this story. It's about a girl named Alyssa who was turned into a vampire in order to save her life. When Lysander, a loner vampire, comes across a couple of guys trying to rape and kill a young woman - he decides to save her life instead of letting her die.
I wouldn't say that this is the "typical" vampire book. A big portion of this book has to do with Alyssa grieving her human life and coming to terms with being a vampire. These vampires don't feed from anima...more

This is a great read! As a lover of the paranormal genre, this was special in that for the first time I got a feel for what might physically happen to a person who is turned. Alyssa, the protagonist, is attacked on her way home from a cafe when her friend stands her up. The hero in the story, Lysander saves her from mortal death after the attack and while nurturing her after the turning falls in love with her, giving him a reason to "live" and love again. Alyssa is young and somewhat naive. Trou...more
There was a lot i liked about the book. Originality. Female lead, who had strength. Her vampire 'teacher'. The urban atmosphere. Katie has an amazing quality that translates into fresh-kickbutt-seducation. I enjoyed following the struggles of the main heroine.
Another book, Pretty When She Dies, also employs a female who has become a vampire and has to deal. I liked that main character in that too. Though, in Pretty When She Dies, the details can get too gruesome and that was my only dislike of...more

Life doesn't always play out the way we plan it. That's what makes it such a great adventure. You never know what is around the next corner.
Whilst walking home one night twenty five year old Alyssa is brutally attacked before being saved by Lysander. But he didn't save her in the conventional sense and now Alyssa's life will never be the same again. Turned without choice Alyssa now has to come to terms with the changes she has to make. This book is hard to rate. As you can see from this blog, I rarely rate a book 5-star unless I absolutely loved the book. I wanted to give this a 5-star rating because I truly enjoyed, or even maybe loved it. However, it's not the same level as my love for Vampire Academy and other books in the 5 stars category. So how do I rate this book? Let me try.

My Review:
I was pretty excited when I had the chance to participate in this blog tour. Katie Salidas is an author that is fairly new to me, but I have whole-heartedly jumped onto her bandwagon. Just when I thought that I might be over "creatures of the night", I discovered Salidas' vampire books, and fell back in love with the characters that she brings to life on the page. Alyssa is a human going about her life in her normal routine. Work, friend, her favorite coffee-house routine, and what can be called a simple and happy life. That is until walking home one night alone she runs face to face with everyones worst nightmare. Rapists wandering the streets looking for their next prey. On the cusp of death, Lysander, a loner vampire comes to her rescue and saves her from immediate death. As she struggles with letting go of her old life she meets other new vampires, le...more
This novel takes place in Las Vegas, where I also live, so it was neat reading about places that I have seen. For instance, in the first chapter, the main character, Alyssa, is attacked on the barely lit sidewalks of the UNLV campus-I have been on these same sidewalks at night and have also felt scared and clutched my pepper spray, just as she did, though, thankfully, with very different results. Alyssa is turned into a vampire before we are even two chapters in, so I am not giving away any spoi...more
Man, I didn't really like this book because the main character was so annoying. I only finished it because I was hoping the author would pull a Joss Whedon and kill her off.
Alyssa is a self-pitying 25 year old when she's brutally attacked. Quite brutally. Her attackers are dispatched by the vampire, Lysander, who turns her to save her from dying from her injuries.
So, now we have an immortal vampire who's a self-pitying, whining, screw up. Here's the thing, when you've only been a vampire for a f...more
