This book will be perfect to hand kids headed into 5th grade. The characters are strong, the structure of the book interesting with its multiple viewpoints, and the story interesting - and I had passed this up from the reviews. It didn't sound so strong - but each chapter is told by a dr=ifferent student in the class, describing events frmo a slightly different perspective and clarifying the mudyy bits by this change in POV. The teacher is one who offers challenges rather then a standard curricu...more
This is the story of an elementary teacher, Mr. Terupt, who has a unique way of reaching all the students in his class. They love learning from him. An accident at school has a way of changing a lot of characters in the book. I liked the way the book was told in alternating chapters by his various students. The issue I had with this book, though, was feeling that students of this age wouldn't be saying and feeling the way that they did. I was always picturing these students as being in middle sc...more

This is a story about a new teacher in a Connecticut school that all the kids in his classroom adore. He is the best Teacher they've ever had, and He helps many of the students with their serious problems. They don't know what they have until Mr. Turupt is in serious danger.
I absolutely loved this book. I laughed and scoffed and cried. I would definitely recommend this book to any fifth grader out there, solely because they can relate the most. I am in sixth grade, and I enjoyed it more than ev...more

Because of Mr. Terupt is the story of a fifth grade classroom at Snow Hill School. The story is told from the perspectives of Jessica, Alexia, Peter, Luke, Danielle, Anna, and Jeffery, students in the new teacher, Mr. Terupt’s class. This novel centers around seven students about to start their fifth grade year at Snow Hill Elementary School in a small Vermont town. There's Luke (who loves school), Jeffrey (who hates it), Lexie (a bully), Danielle (who is generally bullied), Anna (mostly ignored), Jessica (the new girl) and Peter (the troublemaker). They're assigned to a first-year teacher, Mr. Terupt. And Mr. Terupt turns out to be one of those teachers you never forget.

This book is organized into a very specific structure, taking place over one school year. The chapters begin with the names of the months, starting with September, and the beginning of school. Within the chapters, the narrative is divided up amongst the key characters, a group of specific students in the classroom of Mr. Terupt, a new fifth grade teacher. Peter, Jessica, Alexia, Luke, Danielle, Anna and Jeffrey take turns telling the story of how they grew along with the guidance and love of a v...more
Because of Mr. Terupt is one of those inspiring stories that makes every teacher want to understand his or her students better, every child long for teachers whose caring nature is the first thing that shows, and every adult remember that special teacher from the past. Just from reading the back cover, we already know that something tragic will happen, but even without that carrot, you will want to keep reading. Seven students from Mr. Terupt’s fifth grade class relay events from the first day o...more
It was likeable but not memorable. The story involves fifth graders at Snow Hill School and presents the points of view of seven of them in alternating chapters. Their new teacher, Mr. Terupt, quickly becomes a beloved and well-respected instructor. He is firm but he doesn't always take a disciplinary approach to correcting behavior. He prefers to state what possible consequences could result from the misbehavior and expects the student to ruminate and come to the right decision. This approach,...more

This book is written from 6 different points of view. Mr. Terupt is a new teacher who tries to get his students to be responsible for their actions. The students like his class and method of teaching but when one prankster causes a serious injury, the students have to rethink about their behaviors and the consequences of how they treat others.

A class of diverse students are glad that they have a new teacher; he's funnier, more aware, and more creative than the "mean old farts" that have been teaching long enough to be wise to the kids' tricks. Classroom dramas unfold; the mean girl, Alexis, tries to start a "girl war"; students have family problems; the class reads Summer of the Swans (which Mr. Terupt says is not an exciting book, but a good one that will make them think) and works with a Collaborative Classroom on several projects....more

Wow. Another great one, I think made all the more great because it is a first novel. I would never have guessed that! I worried at the beginning trying to keep track of all the different students and their personalities, but I had no trouble with that. I knew who each was as soon as they were speaking. And I loved their personalities--even the troublesome ones. Because they are just like so many kids I either knew when I was young or like the ones I work with every day at work. I loved seeing ho...more
i remember watching 90210 and especially dawson's creek and ended up thinking: these kids are acting way older than high schoolers! well, that's my big problem with this book. these kids are expressing themselves with way more maturity than your average 5th grader.
well, i'll get back to the problems, but let me set the stage: this is a story told over the length of the school year about a class of seven 5th graders and their relationship with their teacher. the story is told from each student's...more

Holy cow! Could there have been two different books than Out of my Mind and Because of Mr. Terupt? They would make a great compare and contrast exercise for students; it was interesting to have read them one after another. Where the characters change very little in the first, there are major transformations in the second, a dismal ending in Out of my Mind and a virtual love fest in Mr. Terupt. Rejection vs embracing of disabled students, clueless teachers vs caring teachers, etc. You get the poi...more
well I read it in less than 24 hours, so it was captivating for sure, and I enjoyed the story, because i like stories, and movies about teaching, and teaching philosophy. I thought this was interesting because it was written in journal format, by kids, about their teacher and interactions and growth amongst each other.
Can you learn teacher philosophy? or is it innate? I certainly think it is a little of both! Good thoughts. Good perspective. I remember I once taught a Seminary preparatory class...more

Some kids love school and some kids hate school. This year, a whole class of fifth graders realizes they love school and it is all because of Mr. Terupt. Through this story of lessons in growing up and friendships, readers grow to care about seven very different students in one very special teacher’s classroom. As the school year is told through the eyes of seven students, the reader starts to learn of the circumstances outside of school that shape the behavior and view of each student. Halfway...more

Because of Mr. Terupt (2010) by Rob Buyea is the moving story of a new 5th grade teacher and the wonderfully positive influence he has on his students. The story takes place over the period of one school year. It is presented through the eyes of seven students: "Jessica, the new girl; Alexia, a bully; Peter, class prankster and troublemaker; Luke, the brain; Danielle, who never stands up for herself; shy Anna;and Jeffrey, who hates school." Mr. Terupt seems to be able to reach each student where...more
There isn’t a teacher who wouldn’t want to be known as a “Mr. Terupt.” And I certainly wish I’d had an instructor like him in 5th grade or any other. (Though I did have a first grade teacher who wore a different pair of patent leather pumps to match each outfit, and I’ve been wearing shiny shoes ever since.)
But in Rob Buyea’s inspiring first novel, newbie teacher Mr. Terupt is different. He breaks down barriers and earns the trust and admiration of his students. We find all this out not from Mr....more

This is a sweet but overly predictable book about how students change because of a teacher (and an accident). I ended up crying in bed reading it, because it certainly knows how to jerk the tears, but the characters are pretty simple stereotypes, complex only in the ways the stereotypes allow. (The ditzy girl is bitchy BECAUSE her mom and dad fought and mom kicked dad out so she is compensating; shocking. I liked Anna and Jeffrey, at least, though they didn't go too much more complex).

Because of Mr. Terupt is the story of seven fifth graders who are in Mr. Terupt's homeroom class. Being a new teacher, they have no idea what to expect, some even thinking that they'll be able to get away with things with him that they otherwise wouldn't think of doing. Little do they know how much their lives will change over the next five months. This is also a story of love, forgiveness, and growing on the part of each of them. The book is broken up into months with each student having one or...more
Whenever two or more individuals become part of a group, each individual's personality becomes a big part of that organization as well. Author Rob Buyea did a fabulous job of ensuring that the voice of each character in this amazing story was specific and easily identified.

One Mr. Terupt, ten months, seven fifth-grade points-of-view. There's Jessica, the new girl from California, Luke, the class nerd, Lexie, the diva with a mean streak, almost invisible Anna, Peter the dude, Danielle the chubby farm girl, and Jeffrey, the boy with the secret. Mr.Terupt has big plans for the bunch, but word math and weird science aren't the only things on his curriculum.. As the days go by, and Mr. Terupt's wacky lessons sink in, we learn that these trivial titles don't suit the st...more

This is the highest rated book in our mother-daughter book club so far. My 11-year-old daughter gave it a 9.5 out of 10. It's a good discussion book.
Buyea does a good job of getting inside the voices of each character, who take turns narrating. Alexia was, like, so annoying, like I wanted to clobber her! But it has made me more conscious of how often I pepper my speech with "like!"
