Attention readers of romance, suspense and military fiction, you will LOVE this book! Not only is it a love story but it's full of intrigue and heroism that will stop your heart! I was riveted to the pages of this book and finished it in a matter of hours. It's not a lovey dovey, goo goo eyes romance but the story of two hurting people in a marriage that is falling apart. Sydney Jacobs doesn't know how to deal with a husband who she still loves but suffers with PTSD. Max Jacobs doesn't want to r...more

As my friends Renee and Rel both said, Digitalis, the next book in the Discarded Heroes series cannot come soon enough and I fully and whole heartedly agree. Nightshade is intense and real. Mixing up a team of veteran special ops from various divisions with a endangered marriage, a PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) SEAL in denial and anger, a wife reporter bent on discovering the black ops team with a group of missionaries in danger of Muslim terrorists and my goodness do not expect any slee...more

Make room Dee Henderson, tip your hat Chuck Holton, Ronie Kendig has well and truly arrived and stamped her authority in the suspense genre! There are writers who excell at characterisation, others pace their stories to perfection while some can write a love story that touches the soul yet rarely have I seen those talents combined...until now! Just like the Hayabusa motorbike Max Jacobs rides, Nightshade is a powerful and electrifying read, accelerating through danger at breakneck speed and stir...more

A wild ride! Even up to the very last page! I have to admit, I get bored quite easily with so many books I read these days, but that was NOT the case with Ms. Kendig's new release Nightshade! This new author has a definite talent in creating likeable, real characters and then placing them in the most harrowing situations! The hero, Max, is one angry dude, but there's a good reason for his anger. He's also a true hero in every sense of the word. Noble, honorable, protecting, strong, brave. Honest...more

I loved this book! After reading Ronie Kendig's first book, Dead Reckoning, and hearing all the great reviews about this book, I knew it was going to be a winner. This is right up there with the great military and suspense books by Dee Henderson and Susan May Warren.

Though Max and Sydney are struggling in their marriage, it was great to see that she was committed to him, wanted him to get help with his PTSD and wanted their marriage to work. Also, the story was very fast paced and full of suspen...more

I’ve become a fan of romantic suspense. What can I say? There’s something about the danger and a man of honor willing to lay it all on the line for his team, his country and the people he loves. This series looks at a group of men assembled for black-ops. Undercover international operatives that are not acknowledged by the government but go in and do the dirty work no one else wants to. The name of this team is Nightshade (also title of the first book) and is made up of men with dark pasts who h...more

Nightshade Discarded Heroes #1

Nightshade has it all. It’s like a guy book for girls. Or maybe a girl book for guys. Action, suspense, mystery, a few good punches and kicks…and a bit of love thrown in the mix.

Max Jacobs is a former Navy SEAL suffering from PTSD and struggling to assimilate back into everyday life. He’s leaving a tour of duty behind him, and now his marriage and wife. He thinks he has nothing to live for as he flies down the highway on his motorcycle, hardly caring that he just mi...more

Nightshade combines the story of David and the A Team. The Bible doesn’t talk about the scars killing in war put on David’s soul and the A Team made it look fun. Although I hate the violence that permeates too many TV shows and movies, Max’s pain drew me in. The killing he did left him a shattered man. Did David live with guilt?

Nightshade tells several stories: Max, his wife and a missionary couple. Max, a “discarded hero,” and former soldier, presumably discharged, but a member of Nightshade,...more

Nightshade by Ronie Kendig surprised me. I am not usually a mystery or suspense person, but something pulled at me, told me to read it and I could not be more glad that I did. It was an enjoyable, emotional read from start to finish.Ms.Kendig drew characters I could relate to, people I wanted to get to know better. I cried several times, identified with their emotions throughout and did not want to stop reading. I was hard pressed to stop for anything, even when my eyes got so tired that the word...more

This is a new author that I have discovered and I have to say I really enjoyed her book. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series and hope she continues writing about these characters.

I am not a huge fan of lengthy descriptions. Ms. Kendig however, has turned descriptions into an art form. The way she describes a scene or an action is exactly how I can see myself doing the same action. For example, in Chapter 10 she writes:

"Despite the sun and warmth radiating into the roo...more

Nightshade is a fast paced military thriller. I liked how the author showed that PTSD can negatively touch many areas of a soldier's life. Spiritual, emotional, mental, physical. Even relationships between friends and family. There were many complexities in this story that required solid plotting, and that was very well done. I didn't see any inconsistencies. The author did a great job with the setting as well. I felt like I was traveling around the world with Syd and with the Nightshade team. T...more

Several friends had recommended this series to me, and book one did not disappoint. Max Jacobs is a retired Seal who can't seem to find an outlet for his anger. When his wife files for divorce, Max is devastated and accepts a position on Nightshade, a black ops team. When Sydney, a reporter and also Max's soon-to-be ex-wife, starts reporting on this mysterious group rescuing people around the world, will Max be able to save his wife from those threatening her and his marriage?

Lieutenant Max Jacobs has been honorably discharged from the Navy. He's suffering PTSD. He's been served a restraining order. And his estranged wife Sydney is divorcing him. Max's life has taken a dive. But then Max is offered a place in an elite black ops unit code-named Nightshade. Maybe serving in this group will give him the direction he needs to bring meaning back to his life.

Nightshade reminds me very much of Dee Henderson's books. For the most part this is well-written and enjoy...more

Ronie is an amazing writer and has captured the dangerous yet heroic lives of people in the military. She has managed to put it in book form in such a way that demands you keep reading to find out more about the characters and what happens to them. You just can't help but care about them.

Nightshade introduces you to the team but focuses on the leader or "Alpha", Max. It also takes you to an island in the Philippines where missionaries are being held captive. It was a twist that I didn't expect...more

I must admit, I started the first chapter of this book and couldn't finish right away. Actually, I didn't finish it until after I read the 2nd book, Digitalis. This time, I started reading and couldn't stop! Ronie Kendig has beautiful character development. She truly knows how to write their thoughts, emotions, and "internal battles" in a way that completely draws you in. I literally could not put this book down (the second time around ;)). Her characters were real, they had flaws that made your...more

I really enjoyed the book until the end. It was fast moving, good plot and held my interest to the point of almost a page turner. I was really disappointed in the end as the author seems to have hurred the wrap up. Everything happened in a blur and I felt that after so much time was spent building the reader up to the cohesiveness of the team and the importance of serving your country even if it was basically unrewarded however, one of the team members does not seem to be adequately honored at h...more

P.U. What a stinker...

Book is published by organization offering exceptional value and Biblical inspiration to the masses (taken from mission statement). It is anything but a gross marketing scam.

Story is nothing like those found in Scriptures. Promotes killing of others (non-Americans) by ex-elite military forces. Promotes secret armies within the United States.

Depicts relationship between a man and a woman as abusive one.

Panders to the uneducated in the same vein as grocery checkout tabloids.

I read this book when it just released in 2010, but I recently reread it and I probably enjoyed it even more!
Having read all the books in the Discarded Heroes Series, I started to love all the guys. Max is one of my favorites, but all guys are easy to love and it was great to read each of their stories.

Max is a former Navy SEAL and has seen too many awful things in combat. Those things are haunting him and unleashes his anger. Now his wife Sydney is afraid of him and files a restriction order an...more

Ex-military gets sucked back in after his wife gets a restraining order against him. He's got some serious PTSD and is unwilling to admit it. Her family's pressuring her, worried about keeping her safe. He's working for a secret team and she's a reporter trying to identify members of a team of soldiers who just show up and do a job then disappear. Inevitably, they get mixed up together in one of his missions.

Story entertaining. Not too thrillerish, but exciting pace. Nice message about faith in...more

Nightshade. If you’re in search of a deadly plant, look elsewhere. But if you’re after the Discarded Heroes—a team of former military special ops men who take assignments no one can talk about, but every wants to see handled—look no further.

Maybe I’m late to the party. After all, Nightshade, the first book in Ronie Kendig’s series came out in 2010. Still, I’m glad I made it at all. And I want to make sure others don’t miss it.

I can’t recommend Nightshade highly enough.

I was so excited to get this book in the mail. After reading Wolfsbane (the third in the series) I knew I had to read the rest. Nightshade is the first book in the Discarded Heroes series and really sets the stage. Even though I read these books out of order, it still held many surprises and it was really neat reading about how the team formed - something only briefly mention in Wolfsbane.

It didn't take me long to really feel for these characters. By the time I was introduced to Sydney, my heart...more

NIGHTSHADE by Ronie Kendig reminds me a lot of the NCIS series from Mel Odom with just a little more emotional kick for the female reader.

Former Navy SEAL, Max Jacobs, suffers with PTSD after his tour of duty. Having a hard time assimilating back to civilian life, he allows his untreated emotional battle scars to upend his marriage. He loves his wife without question, but ignoring the issues of his emotional state forces her to file a restraining and seek divorce.

Sydney Jacobs loves Max but can...more

Jan's Pick. Ronie Kendig has outdone her debut release, Dead Reckoning with Nightshades. This intense story full of action, is also full of emotion and life. Men dealing with issues they hadn’t planned on. Surprise after surprise and bomb after bomb set this adventurous trail with the reader racing to the end. I found myself crying and smiling and hated it when it ended.
But I have it on good authority that that there are more Discarded Heroes stories coming. Ronie, I can’t wait!

Ronie Kendig is an award-winning, bestselling author who grew up an Army brat. She married her own hunky hero, who’s an Army veteran. After twenty-plus years of marriage, she and her husband have a full life with four children and two dogs. Ronie’s degree in psychology has helped her pen novels of raw, broken characters. Since launching onto the publishing scene, Ronie’s Rapid-Fire Fiction has hit...more
