A good book, an enjoyable read, but I found the romance slightly unbelievable. Why would you fall in love with someone who treats you this way? Reminiscent of the old-school type historical romance where the men were asshats and the women saw the "good guy" underneath even with no actual proof. The mystery was easy to predict. Having said that, I did like the writing. I plan to read the next in this series to see wether it was just this story or this author in general that I wasn't loving.

"One Night in Scotland" was a romp of a read. A delightfully strong-willed heroine and a damaged hero, one of my favorites. Hawkins' writing is enjoyable and you feel whisked along. By far my favorite quality of her writing is her characterizations, both the main protagonists and the secondary characters were rich and well-developed.

I'd have given it 4 stars, but she whisked me so fast at the end that I felt a bit put out of sorts. Everything was tied up so quickly once the dominoes started to f...more

Mary's brother, an adventurer and Egyptologist, is being held captive in Egypt until he returns an artifact he bought and sent to a colleague in Scotland. Mary sets out to retrieve the object to save her brother, but the Earl of Erroll (the colleague who possesses the artifact), does not trust her and is unwilling to just give her the artifact until he has proof that she is who she says she is.

My favorite character by far is Mary. She has a lot of spunk and maintains cool and collected at times...more

ONE NIGHT IN SCOTLAND by Karen Hawkins is a delightful, exciting historical romance set in 1822, Scotland. It is the first in the Hurst Amulet series. It is well written with details, depth, twists and turns. It has romance, sweet sensuality, betrayal, trust, love, passion, adventure, mystery, an ancient treasure, family and love of artifacts. The hero, Angus, is strong, scarred from a fire seven years earlier that took the life of his wife, has a temper, has trust issues, loves priceless artifacts,...more

This is one of the best romance novels I have read in awhile. This is a sit down in one reading type of book. I couldn't put this down, I almost wanted to put everything in my life on hold just to finish this one. So, yes I loved it! The chemistry between these two characters, Mary and Angus, jumps off the pages. Mary was a prisoner in Angus's house until he could prove who she was. She did not make his life easy for him at all. She was so full of spunk that not even Angus fully knew how to han...more

I liked the story, despite the fact that I didn't really identify with the heroine. If I believed I was on a mission to save my brother, and I believed I had a set amount of time to assure that the ransom was delivered to his kidnapper, I would certainly not be blase about being kept prisoner by someone pigheaded and refusing to believe I was who I claimed to be. I would certainly not be playing games, trying to annoy him in order to gain a little more comfort while I waited passively for proof...more

On Monday I attempted to read a more serious and worthy volume from my gloriously large to-read pile, but the way my day progressed highlighted that I was in need of some simple escapism this week, so I picked up One Night in Scotland. Aaaaaand it was fine, it certainly offered me escapism, but there were enough moments to make me seriously consider giving this two stars.

Starting with the grumbles: this book had all the subtlety of a brick. I liked the beginning, introducing Mary on a stormy nig...more

This book is part of the Hurst Amulet series. Even though the above suggests that it is the first book, I believe that the first book in the series is Much Ado About Marriage. It does introduce the Hurst Amulet first. I haven't read that one, so this series may be an offshoot of that book. I may have to pick it up to find out. ;)

Hmm, so I read the synopsis... scarred, dark Earl, foreboding personality hiding his past. A huge castle with an educated woman who will not bend to his will. To me this...more

I know, I know, it's Karen Hawkins and she's one of my favourites authors but.... this book doesn't hit right for me. I mean, it was good but not good enough. I don't know what happened actually.... her writing and storyline is just fine but there's something lacking, something that is missing. Maybe because this time round she didn't really concentrate so much on the both characters passions and romance? It's more like an adventure book rather than a romance novel.

I don't know.... but this is...more

When I read and reviewed Karen Hawkins' Much Ado About Marriage earlier this year, I knew I'd found an author who I'd be reading a lot more of. She has continued to entertain with this latest offering, the first in the new series about the mystery of the Hurst Amulet.

One Night in Scotland is one of those reads that I stopped everything else I was doing to complete. I was hooked from the very start with the humor and adventure that was jumping off the first few pages. I love it when a book pulls...more

The first book in what appears to be a romance series mixed with action, mystery and suspense, One Night in Scotland delivers all that is promised in the blurb and more.

Beginning with a minor deception by the Earl of Erroll, the book doesn't waste time getting started with the mystery and suspense. What I didn't expect though, was so much... Humor. Mary is a lovely, strong female character and I loved her so much! It really is hard for me to find histo...more

I'm gonna give this 3.5 Stars. It was a good read, and the characters were good and interesting, but I felt like I didn't really get to know them well enough. After all, they only spent a few days together, and during that time Angus didn't really open up at all about the fire that killed his wife Keira (who just so happens to look almost exactly like our heroine Mary) and left him with scars on his face, neck, shoulders, and one arm. Also, in the beginning when he's looking at Keira's portrait...more

Every story has a back story and the back story here involves a fire that partially ruins the home of the Earl of Erroll. After the fire in which his lady wife parishes in the flames and he somehow blames himself, he has completed 'updated' the rest of the castle with all kinds of plumbing and new lighting fixtures (it is based in 1822 -- so it isn't exactly jacuzzis but close to it!).

Mary Hurst and the daughter of one of her servants is traveling in winter to the home of the Earl of Erroll bec...more

A letter arrives at the family vicarage from the brother adventurer. I am being held hostage in Eqypt and must have the onyx box to be released. Retreive it from safekeeping at the Earl of Erroll's home and send it to me. Mary Hurst, arrives at the castle, only to find she cannot prove she is the sister of Michael the adventurer and that her brother's life depends on sending the box to Eqypt. She in turn is held prisioner until her identity can be proved. Don't hold Mary captive; she thumps furn...more

I adored this book. I seriously smiled non-stop like a 14-year-old girl with a major crush on a boy across the hall. First, Angus, he is grumpy, moody, irritable (help me out here) and all those other adjectives describing someone who woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Nevertheless, he is smart, sensitive, cocky (yes this goes into the good quality side) and loyal. Second, Mary is grumpy, moody, irritable but also, smart, sensitive, witty, and loyal. Yup, they are exactly alike so they challe...more

Wow this book is REALLY BAD! The writing is just so flat and uninspired. Not even sure if I can finish it.

Well, I DID finish it, and it didn't get any better. The hero (Earl Erroll) and the heroine (Mary Hurst) were both assholes, the writing was flat, the plot was ludicrous, the plot "twist" was painfully obvious, and the sex scene was ridiculous and completely out of place (we go from a few kisses now and then to suddenly "she placed her other hand on his cock" - what? am I suddenly in anothe...more

I realized the other day I had an almost complete Karen Hawkins library, but most of it was in my TBR. I'd thoroughly enjoyed the MacLean stories, so decided they were next on the list. I've read her Abduction series, the St John Talisman and the Just Ask Reeves series in the last 2 weeks. Thoroughly enjoying them all. So today, I finished this one.

I loved the spunk of the heroine, Mary Hurst, and laughed at the personality of her maid, Abigail. The mistrust of Angus Hay, Earl of Erroll, is quit...more

Mary Hurst, when finding out one of her brothers, is a prisoner, and needs to find a certain ancient box to trade for him, she heads up north to Scotland to find the artifact so she can save her brother's life. After traveling long hours and when she finds the Earl of Erroll, he is less than understanding to her 'story' and goes about and keeps her prisoner in his castle. Angus, although he is tempted to believe Mary, he knows that there is someone that is after the priceless artifact and he mus...more

I am a fan of Karen Hawkins HR books - they are light and fun. This is the start to a new series and it is a spinoff from another series that I have read. This story is no exception. I loved the story of Mary Hurst, stay at home spinster sister who yearns for adventure. She is seriously spunky. And the brooding Earl of Erroll, Angus is wonderful as his world is turned upside down by this very appealing heroine. Great, witty fun with a slight mystery makes this a wonderful read. My only complaint...more

Fabulous book to begin/continue the MacLean/Hurst Amulet series by Karen Hawkins. Her characters are always so enjoyable and easy to root for and Mary and Angus are no different.

Angus, the Earl of Erroll is a scientific man but has suffered a great tragedy that cost him his wife and scarred him physically. Mary is the youngest daughter of a vicar, a smart, knowledgeable young lady who has helped out her brother, Michael, who is an adventurer. When Michael gets into trouble and requests that Mary...more

This was what I would consider a quick read romance novel, a little cheesy but fun none-the-less. I chose it because of Scotland but it really could pretty much have been anywhere there is a castle. It is the story of Mary who is on a quest to retrieve an artifact that she needs to ransom her brother from his captors in another country (her brother dealing in historical artifacts). This leads her to the castle of his friend and a collector of such things. However the Earl does not believe she is...more

You guys are probably going to laugh at me- I got the next book Scandal in Scotland for review, and as I was flipping through it, I realized there was an excerpt for the first book (this one, One Night in Scotland) at the end. So, I started reading it. And was so intrigued by it, I ordered the book immediately.

We enter with a letter from the heroine's brother Michael, who is an Egyptologist, and is being held ransom by an unknown person, for a certain artifact. So Michael sends a letter to his...more

Come on, tell me truly, what women can resist a sexy, dark, slightly roguish Scottish lord, expect perhaps if her were competing against a sexy, dark, slightly roguish Scottish lord who is also a werewolf...those are the standards...Karen Hawkins meets and exceeds. I love the wittiness of the characters, the strength of the heroine, the magnetism between them and the obstacles they both have to overcome to be together. I am well aware I described a romantic novel period but it is all about style...more

Interesting start of the series! And I am so glad the Hurst family is here with their own stories!
I would give it a 3.5 stars
The plot was excellent; I couldn't like Errol at all times and the romance that bloomed didn't catch my attentions. And as for Mary, I couldn't like her! At the end I felt as if something was not written in the book. The ending was the weakest part of the book.
So why is there a 3.5 stars up there? It is very interesting to read. I mean, I was bored reading it.

I really thought this was just a slight version of Beauty and the Beast. I did like the chemistry and the characters, so I gave it 3 stars. Not sure if I am going to read any more of her books.
Mary sets out to help her brother who is an Egyptologist, and she must go this castle to speak with the earl there.Well the earl doesnt believe she is who she says she is, and locks her up until this mutual friend of her brothers and his comes to prove her identity.Very little romance.
Once Upon
A refreshing, funny and exciting historical romance that has sweet romance, betrayal, love and mystery. If you love historical romances this one has a lot of details that help you transfer yourself back in time and relate to the story.

A heroine that is not afraid to embark in adventures, fiercely loyal to her family and strong willed meets a hero scarred by a fire where he lost his wife, he has trust issues and a very bad temper but very loyal to his friends and they share a love for antique art...more

I have been in love with all of these characters since the beginning of the Maclean series and was very thrilled to see the Hurst children all grown up and finding loves of their own. Mary was another interesting heroine in a family of adventurers, but she was just beginning to come into her own. Faced with the dark and distrusting Angus Hay, she is forced to find her inner mischievousness and embrace the adventure she has inadvertently landed herself in. Angus, a forbidding and introverted man,...more

Now this is a hero after my own heart. Angus Hay, Earl of Erroll is a scarred sophisticated man who wants nothing more than to be left alone with his discoveries, but when a woman comes calling asking after a strange artifact-one he's been warned against giving up- he gets anything but solitude. Can Mary Hurst gain this man's trust in order to free her brother? Read it to find out. Will say this much- Mary and Angus will go head-to-head in who can be more stubborn.

I loved this book. I loved Mary and her desire to change her life to be more adventurous, like her brothers. I loved Angus and his desire to stay secluded due to an earlier tragedy in his life. Opposites certainly found themselves attracted in this story.

Mary has to travel to Scotland to retrieve an artifact her brother sent to Angus for analysis. Her brother has been kidnapped in Eqypt and his captors are requiring the onyx box in exchange for his return. Angus believes Mary is out to steal th...more

Karen Hawkins is an award winning New York Times and USA Today best selling author of historical and contemporary romance. She writes full time from her home in Florida while consuming copious quantities of Diet Coke and surrounded by two very large rescue dogs and one very cranky rescue cat.
