I gave Happy Birthday to You! a two because the story is not one that is likely to engage young readers. The illustrations are very colorful and they help to move the text along. And the rhyming pattern throughout the book is very predictable which is good for young readers. The pages don't have more than ten lines of words. As an early reader it fits the criteria of a good book. But the ...more

With all of the typical zaniness of his usual writing style, Dr. Seuss has turned the spotlight on the single day of the year that belongs to oneself more than any other: One's birthday.
Energetic and fun, Happy Birthday to You! is, more than anything else, about appreciating the uniqueness of oneself and being content with what that means. As it is put in one of the final lines of the book, "There is no one alive who is you-er than you!"

This book was special to me. One I will always remember because...

This is a typically zany Dr. Seuss - with the topic this time being birthdays (your's in particular!).
As always love the rhyme, rhythm and illustrations.
I'm conflicted about this book..
On the one hand it is extremely self-affirming.
On the other it reinforces the 'prince/princess for a day' extremely excessive birthday parties.

My boy got this book for his birthday and I have really enjoyed reading it to him every day since. It's about a magical place where birthday celebrations last all day, cost several thousand dollars and are carried out by the birthday bird. It's a bit long, but I'm all about expanding the kids' attention span. We have yet to read this without giggling.

I hears this book when a mother came in and read the book to the class for her sons birthday and dr. Suess's birthday. I think this would be a great book to read on every students birthday becaue it can make them feel special. And also that reading books over and over again helps students learn words and writing so re reading this book would improve childrens vocabulary and writing.
This book was a gift to me on my 2nd birthday. As a military brat, I have frequently moved through the years so the chances of still holding something from my childhood grow slimmer by the years. I treasure this book and am proud to have it on my shelf. I read it every birthday and glee with the same joy as I did in my childhood. It is still the same treasure.
This is a great book. I love the rhymes, they are so much fun to read, you can really get a kick out of their wackiness. The illustrations are pretty comical as well. And since it is a Dr. Seuss book, it is pretty zany. I'd definitely recommend this book.

This is a fun Dr. Suess book that I would like to keep handy in my classroom for when my students have birthdays. I would keep in on special birthday reserve and allow students to take it to their desk and read it on their birthday. It is very fun and exciting with great illustrations! It also makes the one with the birthday feel very special!
This wonderful Dr. Seuss books includes innovative vocabulary (as most Dr. Seuss books ) and rhyming patters. There are about 2-6 sentence paragraphs per two opened pages. The story explains what happens in Katoo when it is your birthday. It is very cute and could be read to make children feel really special on thier special day.
"Today you are you! that is truer than true! there is no one alive who is you-er than you! shout loud, i am lucky to be what i am! Thank goodness i'm not just a clam or a ham or a dusty old jar of sour gooseberry jam! I am what i am! that's a great thing to be! If i say so myself, happy birthday to me!"
Super cute! Repeats over and over how special being "you" is. Love that message.
I bought this for Seth for his birthday and laid it out at his party for guests to sign. Now he has a cute memory of his 1st birthday to keep forver.

I received this book on my birthday in 1966 (I think), and it immediately became my favorite book by Seuss or anybody else. I think it was Geisel's first book with full-color illustrations, and they are mind-blowing even today.
For a book about birthdays, one of the most important days to my kids, this was boring. Both of my boys lost interest. The words are not nearly as engaging as most of the other Seuss books we have so far read.
This is a lot of fun to read and take turn reading with the students. It's a perfect book to read for birthdays as well.
"Today you are you! That is truer that true!
There is no one alive who is you-er than you!"

Growing up, my dad always read this book to me on my birthday. I don't know where it came from, but the copy they had was this old, awesome, falling-apart thing. I wonder if they still have it....
So I'll send Diver Getz and I'll see Diver Gitz

The pop-ups are nice but the illustrations are a bit disappointing. The book is too expensive for what it is also--it's very small with not many pages. The birthday story is alright.
My Mom got this for Fiona when she was born. I think we'll read it to her every year for her birthday, or for as many years as she'll let's us!
Cute Dr. Seuss book about a boy and the events on the day of his birthday. Great book for teaching rhyming words/patterns and creative writing.
This is how every child's birthday should be treated. It's their special and they know it. Show them you know it, too. My favorite book.
i love this book! i got it for my birthday when i was little and its still one of my favorites!! any book by dr suess is good!!
When it ends you're much happier richer and fatter and the Bird flies you home on a very soft platter.
This is a tradition; I read this to my son the night before his birthday & on his birthday each year.
An exhausting bedtime read, but a great birthday story. Makes me wish I lived in Katroo.
As always Dr. Seuss creates a magical world for of unexpected delights.
I can't believe I've never come across this book before. Great gift idea.
My boys love the zaniness of this book. I love the self-affirmation: "I am I."
Interactive book with fur, wheels, popups and scent-sational illustrations.
Why do kids just love anything with the word birthday on it? hee hee!~
