GUYS...I hate to be negative, but the last few books in this series have not lived up to my immense excitement for them. I feel like what I personally loved about this series is not what the AUTHOR likes about it, is that weird/arrogant/ridiculous to say? It's a really weird place to be, because I feel like a jerk not loving what the author's vision is, because she's the the OWNER of the series, but I'm reading these books going, "WHERE ARE THE CHARACTERS AND PLOT I WANT TO SEE?! WHERE ARE YOU G...more
I adore Michelle Sagara.
It's true, I do adore her. And I am in awe of how deep her creativity is. There is not one book of hers that I have read and thought 'oh, that's just like [insert author/book:]'. For me, with Michelle, it just it doesn't happen, and while I certainly haven't read everything out there - and tend to avoid those deemed 'classics' in the genre - I have read a lot.

Although it doesn't seem possible, Sagara just keeps getting better and better with the Elantra series. I think Cast in Shadow remains my favourite Elantra novel, but Cast in Chaos has stolen the second favourite prize from Cast in Fury.
Sagara's writing is just one of the things I love about these novels. There is such a moreish air to the story. I didn't stay up until after midnight just because my best friend wanted to read the book today. I couldn't stop reading. Every word flowed onto the ne...more

I always enjoy these books - they are well written and deal with interesting themes. This one dragged a bit in the middle, with maybe more metaphysical contemplation than was strictly necessary. But I loved the end, and the focus on "home" was really beautiful. Looking forward to the next installment. I would give this 3.5 if I could - I liked it a lot, but want to distinguish between my faves in the series and the ones I just liked.
Sixth in the Chronicles of Elantra fantasy series for young adults about a remarkable young woman who has a lot of learning to endure yet.
My Take
This particular story is about the elements that make up the world: earth, air, fire, and water. Being a magical world, it seems an element may well be missing, creating an opportunity to build a story around refugees fleeing their homeland and how a civilized country/world would meet their plight. A story that is made up of words, and words are very, v...more

This series is, at once, beautiful and frustrating. Sometimes you want to smack Kaylin and sometimes you just want to hug her. If nothing else, the books are entertaining and they capture your attention and imagination very quickly. The author does much the same in Cast in Chaos, expanding and developing the world that she has created and making it something rich and rather lovely (as well as rather terrible to boot).

Really didn't like this one. I feel like these books just keep going and going. Maybe all of Michelle Sagara's books are like that... This just introduced a totally new and in my mind unnecessary plot thread (that I won't describe because of spoilers) when there are still open plot threads I would have been interested in reading.

This is the 6th book in the Chronicles of Elantra series. The 7th book Cast in Ruins is due out in 2011 and there are currently 8 books on contract for this series. This book was okay, but like the last book in the series, focuses more on philosophy and metaphysical stuff than the great fight scenes that I loved to see Kaylin and Severn in. My overall impression was that this book was wordy and long.

I am impressed. The Chronicles of Elantra series has once again been added to with a fabulous tale. I don't read very much High Fantasy, but these books are too good to pass by! Michelle Sagara does a great job in making sure these novels have a very modern feel, and they are a delight to read. Cast in Chaos, the sixth book, continues the story of the Hawk, (read: law enforcement officer) Kaylin Neya.

The series just keeps moving along as a very strong entry in the fantasy field.
As often happens in this series, it starts slow: once it kicks into high gear, it really moves along.
Poor Kaylin (our heroine) never catches a break--and now it looks like there's a major magic outbreak in the city. And that is so not a good thing! The Oracles are very upset, the Dragons Lords are worried and Kaylin is right in the thick of things. Her role as the Chosen is not an easy one--it didn't come with any gu...more

This is another series I've found really uneven. I love the world of Elantra and I love Sagara's writing. The problem is, at least in part, that there are things about the main character that drive me absolutely crazy, though I do find her more tolerable than I have sometimes in the past.
My main objection to this particular book has to do with a plot development from the previous novel in the series, Cast in Silence, which is both confirmed and continued here. I still don't care for it. Speaking...more

Kaylin Neya is a Hawk. In other words she is a cop in the kingdom of Elantra. She investigates the crimes that infest the streets of Elantra. This might be a normal job except for the magic that dominate Kaylin’s life and cases. Her partner is Severn Handred. They grew up together and have a tangled past. They were on patrol on a normal day when it starts raining blood. Babies are being born with magical deformities. Magic is running rampant but no one has any explanations. Kaylin and Severn mus...more
I am calling this The Cast Book In Which People Finally Answer Each Other's Questions. Not that there's not still plenty of evasiveness and need-to-know, but an astonishing number of queries (at least, for this series) actually elicit responses, sometimes even more detailed than Kaylin wants. It made for a much more satisfying read, and helped build a stronger picture of the world.

The sixth book in the cast serie. In this book, the magic in Elani street, the street of the magiciens and charlatans is going wild and the citie is threatened by an invasion from another world.
So far this book is my preferate with cast in Silence as we see more of lord Nightshade (but not enough and far less than in the last book). His relationship with Kaylin is at least starting to develop as we learn finally is true motive. I was rather surprise by part of them but not disapoint and this rev...more

I absolutely love this series. It is one of my favourite, read again and again series. But. And unfortunately there is a but. This installment was a little dense. Too many things going on, endless descriptions, and sometimes the storyline got too convoluted. I love the character development, and I loved the premise of the plot, but I did find myself wanting to skim over the long paragraphs every once in a while. That's the only reason I'm rating this one a star less than the previous books in th...more
The (good) High Fantasy books have one thing in common: they talk about philosophy while letting you think it's an action story.
The Elantra series has this in spades. Lots of action revolving around a very important issue (what makes us human or what is good or right for us vs. the others, etc.)
It has many flaws (that may, no will vary according to each reader), for me the missing personal story arch and the somewhat formulaic plots (to other readers the missing romance or the timeline, which i...more

I'm about half-way through and really enjoying it. This is an author I adore, although I will admit her other series is the one I read over and over again. I like the Elantra books, too, though, in a different way, and they're perfect for summer reading. I'll post more once I've finished.

What I liked about this book is that it deepened Kaylin's relationships with both Severn and Nightshade - something that I had felt like the series needed and wish would continue in the following books. I like all of the interactions and the bits that involve people (dragons, etc.).
On the other hand, I found myself to be confused and losing focus whenever there was a lot of explanation of magic or runes or history. Sometimes I just wanted the book to be over and I hated that. I like to enjoy boo...more

IT is a great book and the series just gets better and better...but I have to confess I'm not entirely in love with this book. I am not sure why because much that has been just hinted at before in previous books have been quite comprehensively explained. In regards to the whole of the series, this is the key volume that does the job it set out to do. It's just that I learned much but failed to have that emotional ride I always look for in my books. For me the book just escaped from being too dry...more
Someone else calls this "The Book in Which People's Questions Are [finally] Answered." She's not wrong. With a re-reading or two, this might make it up to my second favorite in the series. (My favorite is still Cast in Courtlight.) I'm still enjoying the series, and especially enjoying the idea that Kaylin has to learn from her mistakes, and that she is winning through by guess and golly just as much as any skills she may acquire. Sagara has been incredibly loyal to Kaylin's stubborn belief that...more
Cast in Chaos builds upon the story of Elantra, advancing it in a number of ways. You see many of the major characters grow in some aspect. As an added bonus, the world grows a bit, creating the potential for new stories you may not have anticipated.

Well, I think I'm noticing a trend with these books. I start out really enjoying the story, the plot, the world, the characters, etc. But then the climax hits and things get much too wordy over the metaphysical stuff, at which point I start skimming lots and lots. I also wish Sagara would switch things up a bit. I would love to see Kaylin partnered up with Teela, Tain, and Clint instead of Severn all the time. And there are only so many end of the world scenarios that one can take before it gets...more
This is part of a series of books but West has written them to be able to stand alone. It was a tad long getting started but once it did, I really, really liked it. The style is very accessible while presenting some interesting concepts of different societies. Like all good writers, West referenced enough that was similar to our own North American human experience so as to not be confusing. Her descriptions were vivid and I was easily able to picture the scenes in my mind. I found the characters...more
So this is a totally new review than my last which was rather waspish regarding Kaylin's continued chastity. But just because I had ants in my pants at aged 20, not everyone has the same affliction. I did go back and read Cast in Silence, which made this book more understandable in terms of emotional tone.

Well, I am falling out of love with this series. I still like it, somewhat. But it took me for EVER to read this book. It draaaaaged in the middle. My issue was that this book was too long. There was too much obscurity in it and I finally gave myself permission to skim through the middle to get some to some meaningful action-- and less self-effacing foot shuffling and deferring. Now I liked the last couple chapters and the conclusion, and will probobly read the next. And you know what, it drives...more

I really can't say enough about how awesome this series is. I love how Kaylin grows and develops as a person in every book. I love how rich in detail and magic the world is. I love the wry humour that brings balance to otherwise intense reads. I love the entire cast of fully developed and fascinating characters.
In this particular installment, I love the developments in Kaylin's relationships with both Nightshade and Severn. I'm so torn as to which one I'm rooting for in this almost-but-not-quite...more

Cast in Chaos: Chronicles of Elantra, Book 6

Narrated by Khristine Hvam
My first thought: Kaylen attending etiquette lessons so she won't become charred appetizer for mistakenly insulting the emperor has officially become a private running joke in the past four books.
That should be enough to explain Kaylen Naya's personality. As one of the emperor's "Hawks" she defends and upholds the...more

I mostly find these books diverting, and I usually forget exactly what happens in them pretty soon after I finish each of them. This is kind of inconvenient, since although the books are largely self-contained there are some callbacks to others in the series, and I've forgotten some of the characters. (Also, I seem to have skipped an important book for Tiamaris, my favorite secondary character. Which is just SOP when reading Sagara West books, frankly.) However, I do admire how thematically tigh...more
