In the books so far we've seen Morgan delight in her powers. She's discovered both the great and horrible things that can be done with powers. She's been horribly betrayed by someone she loved and she's discovered a great new love that should last her throughout her entire life. She's lost friends and regained them.

Each book is loaded with corny cliches and unrealistic dialogue, which gets annoying, but usually I just try to ignore those and focus on the plot (there are also a lot of plot holes by the way).

But the ending of this book was the worst ever cliche that every romance should KEEP AWAY from. The heroine, Morgan Rowlands, figures out that her father (her "REAL" father) is one of the most powerful, evil, and horrible witches in the world. She gets depressed, she cries, she doesn't know why life is so unfair, etc etc. Then she comes to the conclusion that because half of her is from this horrible evil witch, she somehow becomes evil too, and will "hurt" everyone she ever knew and loved. She gets all heroic and decides to BREAK UP with her boyfriend who she's supposedly "soulmates" with because she thinks she'll hurt him in the future... because she's inherently evil. (Gah x 10.) She then gives her boyfriend (who by the way saved her from the evil clutches of her evil father only a couple days ago) by giving him this excuse: "I don't love you anymore." She drives off melodramatically, with her boyfriend staring off at her in the distance. The end.

1. Is it just me, or is this "I'm your real evil father" thing getting pretty old?
2. And just because your father is evil doesn't mean that you have to be too. YOU ARE WHO YOU CHOOSE TO BE.
3. Do not break up with your boyfriend (who is apparently your witchy soulmate) because you think you might bewitch him and send him over a cliff or something. See number 2.
4. It's irritating to know that in maybe three more books into the series this little love glitch will somehow fix itself and Morgan Rowlands will figure out that she really isn't evil after all, and that everyone can safely live happily ever after. She gets her boyfriend soulmate back, they kiss and makeup, and everyone is coupled with who they're "supposed" to be with. And most likely, the evil father will renounce evil and everyone can be one big happy family, finally.

Anyway, after all that, it sounds like I hate these books. I don't. I just hate the ending of this particular book in the series. I think there are more negatives than positives about every single book in Sweep (I've always wondered why the author chose to name the series "Sweep." It seems like a totally random name that didn't originate from anywhere.), but I keep reading anyway. Likable fluff. Tolerable fluff, maybe. But if you really have something much better to read, then read that book first. :P(less)

Something is going on in the series that is hidden between the lines and which I can't work out. The ending brought tears to my eyes and made me scream at it because it just did not seem right at all. After all could she really throw away something that good when it was going so apparently well? I loved the power and possesion in the books though, in the way that they pull me in and make me wonder, think and feel. I am enjoying the series but they do seem to be getting a little slower at the same time which means I wonder if they are just starting to drag than be the books that they are meant to be?

I kind of expected Cieron to be her father as that seemed a little more than obvious, after all her past mother had loved him and something had clearly gone on between them. However the way that she found out just didn't seem... well it didn't seem shocked enough. It was almost as if it had been worked up to become this big explosion of power and emotion and that yet it failed to convey this and failed to make you go oh and feel what she felt. There is no doubt that there was more potential for this to be expanded on so that it was as emotional as it needed to be.

I will continue to read the series, to find out what happened. Merely because I want to see if they will get back together or not, or if they are to be friends and nothing more. I mean I can understand her irritation with him, he was treating her like a child and over protecting her. But at the same time I could also see where he was coming from. He was just trying to protect the one person that he loved and he failed at it because they didnr't realize it was her that they were after. There is a lot going on in these books and I do feel that there going to have suprises within the future, so I know I just have to keep reading it.(less)

For me, some details and twists were too obvious with all the foreshadowing going on and ideas planted in our minds (most especially the journal entries at the beginning of each chapter) that when I reached the climax of the story, I wasn't as surprised as I thought I should be. I bought the first two volumes of this series when I got stuck in an airport for 8 hours during a storm last winter. So far, I've really enjoyed the series. The story is entertaining, and I like the supernatural aspects thrown in with the teeny-"romance."

There are a lot of series that have many books. Most of the time I don't like that and I never had that feeling with Sweep. Some might think that fiftheen or fourtheen and a sequel is much and it is but it's not to much. It's good. Most of the time I read series with four or maybe even five but that's it. Ohh, Morgan, you broke my heart, while you were breaking Hunter's heart. Although, I know why you did it, I don't think it was necessary and I think it's a bad move. Why bother breaking up with Hunter? Being with Hunter, is probably the BEST option for her. He's a seeker, he loves her, he's good and he can keep Morgan grounded and away from the black magic that runs in her Woodbane heritage. This book was another great book. Ms. Tiernan did it again. I totally did not see it coming, that Ciaran was Morgan's father, from the beginning, but somewhere in the middle, I picked up on it myself, before it was revealed. It makes total sense that she would be Ciaran's dad. Her magic is way too powerful for any normal witch. But a blood witch of TWO woodbane backgrounds, now that's some power. I totally knew the guy she kept bumping into was Ciaran though. I just had that feeling, from the moment she bumped into him at the club in NYC.

So now what? She left Hunter. Ciaran's on the loose again, because he couldn't go through with killing his daughter, in turn, he helped Hunter save them both with his magic. Where does that leave all of them? What's the story going to unfold to now? I guess I'll have to wait to book #8, to figure it out.

Some of the other characters in the book, leave me bored to tears though. The whole Robbie/Bree thing just bores me. I can't get into it, if my life depended on it. I keep wondering why it's always pushing to the front though, and if something big is going to come out of it. Hmm?? Sky & Raven on the other hand, keep my attention. I keep feeling like Raven's got some witch blood in her somewhere, and we don't know it yet. She just seems a bit off to me. I feel like Sky is playing with fire with being attracted to Raven and all.

I truly hope that the story doesn't end here with Hunter though. I enjoy him thourouglhy and I think that he should stick around, I feel like he plays a big part in Morgan's life.

Again, like the books before this, the journal entries in the Book of Shadows, are coming from Ciaran. He might have been an evil witch (still is), but he truly did love Maeve (Morgan's birth mother. I found myself feeling bad for him at times, just to realize that he was truly evil. But, still, I couldn't help it. To love someone as he did, and have them shun you, is never a good thing. It's no wonder that he went truly dark, after Maeve left him. Doesn't mean he should of murdered her & Agnus or sent that black wave of magic through towns, but still, I can scarily say, that I understand.

Ciaran trying to take Morgan's power was another good plot in this story. The whole dream/vision sequences that she kept having were pretty cool. I loved the idea of the other coven, using other animals to hide themselves. Pretty interesting. And finding out that Killian was Morgan's half-brother, was no surprise either, considering they liked one another and felt a pull toward one another from the beginning.

This is the seventh book in the Wicca series (after Book of Shadows, The Coven, Blood Witch, Dark Magick, Awakening and Spellbound) and begins a new era for Morgan. Cal and Selene are gone and Morgan is now in a relationship with Hunter. Morgan is also starting to grow into her powers and become more accepting of who she is. This also marks somewhat of a turning point for the series - from this point on the battles are bigger, the highs higher, the lows lower and the magick steps further from modern wicca into the realm of fantasy.

By moving the setting to New York, there is also the opportunity to focus back on a smaller group of characters. Previously the two covens of Cirrus and Kithic had united which meant a lot of characters with not much pagetime. In New York there is only Morgan, Hunter, Bree, Robbie, Sky and Raven which not only means a tighter focus and more depth but also a romantic angle that is far more prevalent than before. It is interesting to read about how different each of the three couples are, and how each has their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

One thing that has remained from the previous books is the careful crafting of tension. Morgan's time is spent looking for a witch in danger, but also on discovering more about her past. Her birth parents lived in New York for a while and Morgan's search to find out more puts one friendship in jeopardy. There are also several twists and turns I didn't see coming leading to a shocking conclusion.

All in all, this was an interesting read and I'm looking forward to Changeling.

Following a disturbing dream that some in the coven believe to be prophetic, Morgan, Hunter and company travel to NYC to try to locate the coven that the dream is about. Morgan continues to grow her relationship with Hunter and is forced to redefine some of her other relationships. She is also learning more about her birth family, maybe more that she ever wanted to know.

Can't help it. I am just hooked. This series is fun and leaves me wanting more. It is definitely a guilty pleasure. Definitely...more

This isn't one of my favorites in the series, since I always thought it moved rather slowly. And the character seemed irritatingly slow herself, not realizing the connections. I do love the introduction to Killian, my favorite male character in Sweep. And I did like that someone besides Hunter, was telling her she was stupid to use her powers in such ways like Robbie did. But it was a good book to connect book six's ending and with what is to come later in the series.

Beim letzten Buch noch gejammert und schon sind zumindest ein Teil der Gruppe wieder mehr dabei. Das gefällt mir und auch, wie es sich zwischen Hunter und Morgan entwickelt, selbst wenn mich ihre Anwandlung am Ende total auf die Nerven ging. Warum sollte sie denn plötzlich eine ultimativ böse Hexe werden? Nur wegen ihren Genen? Schwachsinn.
An sich ist dieser Teil sehr spannend und Morgan erfährt auch wieder mehr über ihre leiblichen Eltern. Yay!

The Calling is an amazing addition to the Sweep series. Though it is short, it is an intriguing novel. The magick, insecurities, jealousy, danger, and love that fill the pages are intoxicating. Once again, Cate Tiernan has me turning page after page until I finish the novel and leaves me begging for more. The hardships of Morgan Rowlands life will have you eager to read more to find out how everything will play out.

Living in Manhattan was incredible, even though I didn't have a lot of money. There was so much to do and see, and so many interesting people to watch. There was a lot of frenetic energy there, and sometimes that felt very wearing and hard to live with. After eight years I was ready for a change, and my husband and I moved back to New Orleans. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)

We stayed in New Orleans five years. By the time we had two small children we knew we had to find someplace safer to live. I was glad my children were born in New Orleans--I had been born there, and my father had, and his father had, and his father had and so on. There was something about the connection of generations of blood coming from one place that I found very primal and important.

Now I live in a cohousing community in Durham, NC. This is the most suburban place I've ever lived, and it's very different from living right in the middle of a city. For one thing, there aren't enough coffee shops. However, it's incredibly safe, and the community is very important to me. There are a lot of strong women here, and I find them inspiring.

Am I a witch? Well, no. Even Wicca is too organized a religion for me. I'm much more idiosyncratic and just need to do my own thing, which is kind of new-agey and pantheistic. It's not that I don't work or play well with others, but I need to decide for myself when I do a certain thing, and how I do it. However, I can really relate to Wicca, and I so appreciate its woman-centeredness and its essentially female identity. I love those aspects, among others.

I have several favorite writers. Barbara Hambly has been the biggest influence on how I describe magic. She's an incredibly imaginative and empathetic writer with a gift for creating a rich, sensual world. I love Barbara Pym, an English writer whose books came out mostly in the fifties. She was a master at describing the thousand tiny moments that make up a woman's day; how the seemingly small and inconsequential thing can suddenly take on a huge emotional importance. I greatly admire P.D. James. She's one of the very few writers who makes me actually look up words in the dictionary. She has a beautiful, precise, educated command of the language that leaves me in awe. I love Philip Larkin's poetry. I read a lot of nonfiction and also have some favorite romance writers. Before anyone groans, let me say that these women write really well about women trying to achieve emotional fulfillment, and that's kind of what we're all doing, right? I also just like reading about sex. Anyway, Jennifer Crusie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and early Linda Howard are my faves.

And then of course there's my dark side, but more on that later.
