Cate Tiernan continues "The Sweep" series with book number seven, "The Calling." This series considered fantasy as it follows a young witch, Morgan, as she comes into her powers. Morgan was a regular teenager until the new guy Cal comes to town and gets her and her friends into magick. Morgan soon finds out that she's no longer who she thought she was. She finds out that she's a blood witch from a long line of Woodbanes and that she's adopted. Her birth parents were murdered and so were their en...more
In the books so far we've seen Morgan delight in her powers. She's discovered both the great and horrible things that can be done with powers. She's been horribly betrayed by someone she loved and she's discovered a great new love that should last her throughout her entire life. She's lost friends and regained them.

Something is going on in the series that is hidden between the lines and which I can't work out. The ending brought tears to my eyes and made me scream at it because it just did not seem right at all. After all could she really throw away something that good when it was going so apparently well? I loved the power and possesion in the books though, in the way that they pull me in and make me wonder, think and feel. I keep on reading them, however this one seemed a little slow compare to the other...more
The first 2-3 books in this series are addictive, a fresh "modern-teen" POV in the tired genre of witches/kids with supernatural powers finding themselves (and the wonder of Wicca) among families/communities who "don't get it".
After #3, it goes downhill. There is no psychological development of the main characters (and the secondary characters are quite shallowly described and hard to distinguish throughout the series; even the more promising and believable ones, BFFs Bree & Robbie are essen...more

Quick Overview: Cate Tiernan has another great installment in the sweep series. Though, the book needs to be a lot longer and fuller.
The Calling is another great installment in the sweep series. I still think these books are too short though, and it is starting to get to me. They spend a lot of time saying what happened in the previous books, and trying to set up what will happen in this book. So there isn't a lot of time for stuff to actually happen, and this late in a series you NEED stuff to...more

Morgan and Hunter and some members of their coven Kithic are in New York City. Hunter is seeking out the meaning behind Morgan's visions about a Woodbane coven that is hidden in the city. But everything turns bad for Morgan when she believes to be doing the right thing (saving a boy witch from his evil father) and then realizing that that evil father is her father too! Yes, Maeve cheated on Angus and Morgan's problem with disobeying the rules comes from her powerful yet evil father. Maybe that i...more
Today's review is on The Calling by: Cate Tiernan
The Calling is number 7 in Tiernan's 15 book Sweep series.
Morgan has had a vision. She saw various predatory animals surrounding a young wolf. The young wolf was going to be killed. When she tells Hunter about it, he in turns informs the council and the next thing you know they are off to New York with Bree, Robbie, Sky, and Raven.
While there Morgan meets Killian in a club. He turns out to be Ciaran's son. The same Ciaran that killed her mother, t...more

For me, some details and twists were too obvious with all the foreshadowing going on and ideas planted in our minds (most especially the journal entries at the beginning of each chapter) that when I reached the climax of the story, I wasn't as surprised as I thought I should be. Revelations didn't have that much impact because I sort of "knew" them beforehand. Maybe it would have been better if the book had twists and turns that weren't expected. I think Cate was trying to scatter bits and piece...more

Cate Tiernan's done it again. She has woven thoughts, emotions, and storylines, into a very perplexing, fluid, and intense piece that makes the magic within this book seem almost tangible. CT is an amazing talent at writing. In this book Morgan has a dream of animals and a young wolf cub being sacrificed before many different animals. When the Council decides that this could be a potential vision of the future, they send Hunter to New York to investigate a mysterious sect of dark witches. Taggin...more

What do you do when your soul mates come together halfway through your series and you need to build sexual tension again? You employ a completely tired plot trick; make them both start hiding things from each other for no apparent reason, construct a mind-blowing revelation for one of them, then turn one (usually the female) into a completely self-absorbed, irrational
IDIOT

Just as Morgan and Hunter are starting to get closer and they finally come to terms with the fact that they are soul mates, fate hands Morgan yet another twist.
Morgan takes a trip to New York with Hunter, Sky, Bree, Robbie, and Raven. Although the trip is a fun "vacation" for the others Hunter is on a quest to find someone who is in great danger because of a dream that Morgan keeps having. He believes it to be Killian, the son of a powerful dark witch in New York. While in New York Morgan goes t...more

I know this isn't the first book, but I actually found it was an exciting and thrilling book. I liked how Morgan goes to New York to find out about herself and her mom. Eventually she ended up finding out more than she actually thought she would. She learned that she was adopted and is a blood witch. Her father is one of the most horrible witches. I also think that Morgan was kind of a wimp through out the book. I think that she needs to learn to stop depending on others and not let people push...more
This book is awesome, actually the whole series of sweep is really good. There is so much feeling and creativeness in the book. Everybook has it's own story and a new adventure. I'm very exited to keep reading the other sequels. I love the view of perspetive from Morgan, which is the main character. She has believe in herself and her powers. Also in every book her history gets more complicated and more exiting. In the two months that the series takes place, Morgan learns more about her past, pre...more

I bought the first two volumes of this series when I got stuck in an airport for 8 hours during a storm last winter. So far, I've really enjoyed the series. The story is entertaining, and I like the supernatural aspects thrown in with the teeny-"romance."
However, I'm starting to get a tad bit irritated with Morgan at this point in the series. I mean, I realize she's gone through a good bit, but the whole doom and gloom thing she has going on "I'm poison, boo hoo hoo," is getting old. Hoping tha...more

There are a lot of series that have many books. Most of the time I don't like that and I never had that feeling with Sweep. Some might think that fiftheen or fourtheen and a sequel is much and it is but it's not to much. It's good. Most of the time I read series with four or maybe even five but that's it. To think about that I always thought that Harry Potter was quite something with seven. I recently (a year or more) found out that there are a lot of series with even fourtheen or more and that...more
Ohh, Morgan, you broke my heart, while you were breaking Hunter's heart. Although, I know why you did it, I don't think it was necessary and I think it's a bad move. Why bother breaking up with Hunter? Being with Hunter, is probably the BEST option for her. He's a seeker, he loves her, he's good and he can keep Morgan grounded and away from the black magic that runs in her Woodbane heritage. I know she feels that the Woodbane curse is upon her and it'll be bad for Hunter, but again, wrong move,...more
I was interested to see where they would take the series after killing off Cal and Selene in the last book. At the beginning of the book, most of the Kithic coven is on their way to New York. Most of them see it is a pleasure trip but Hunter, Sky, and Morgan know differntly. Morgan has been having strange dreams that Hunter has been assigned by the Council to investigate. He goes to New York to try to find the NYC cell of Amarynth, the coven that Selene used to belong to. They are known for usin...more

Morgan continues to grow her relationship with Hunter and is forced to redefine some of her other relationships. This isn't one of my favorites in the series, since I always thought it moved rather slowly. And the character seemed irritatingly slow herself, not realizing the connections. I do love the introduction to Killian, my favorite male character in Sweep. And I did like that someone besides Hunter, was telling her she was stupid to use her powers in such ways like Robbie did. But it was a good book to connect book six's ending and with what is to come later in the series.

I ABSOLUTLY HATE WHEN CHARACTERS DO THIS SHIT! Hatehatehatehatehatehatehate. Maybe because it is so opposite my personality or i have zero restraint and say what im thinking 90% of the time. But its just a rule: Never leave your significant other, especially if your lucky and have a decent one, for a STUPID reason. Maybe its because ive been in that situation... i dont know. If you actually love someone dont screw it up... if you have to let them go for a short amount of time like...more

Yay!

The Calling is an amazing addition to the Sweep series. Though it is short, it is an intriguing novel. The magick, insecurities, jealousy, danger, and love that fill the pages are intoxicating. Once again, Cate Tiernan has me turning page after page until I finish the novel and leaves me begging for more. The hardships of Morgan Rowlands life will have you eager to read more to find out how everything will play out.

"was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1961. New Orleans is one of the most interesting American cities, and it has an incredibly rich and exotic culture that had a profound influence on me. Kids in other cities have lemonade stands; we sold voodoo gris-gris and made wax dolls in the likenesses of our enemies.
