Dragon's Time (Pern (Publication Order) #23)
For the first time in more than three years, bestselling authors Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey, mother and son, have teamed up again to do what they do best: add a fresh chapter to the most beloved science fiction series of all time, the Dragonriders of Pern. Even though Lorana cured the plague that was killing the dragons of Pern, sacrificing her queen dragon in the p...more

I stayed confused reading this book (all the time travel and interactions), but also kept reading it. I enjoyed it but should have probably re-read the previous book to brush up on events. I also found myself being confused by several things. 1st the opening scene was never explained and it just left me confused. 2nd what is up with everyone having relations with everyone else and having two husbands and two wives in a relationship together? I like Pern for its storytelling and basically for the...more

Even though Lorana cured the plague that was killing the dragons of Pern, sacrificing her queen dragon in the process, the effects of the disease were so devastating that there are no longer enough dragons available to fight the fall of deadly Thread. And as the situation grows more dire, a pregnant Lorana decides that she must take drastic steps in the quest for help.

I had just come off reading Dragongirl when I picked up this one (not feeling the need to read the Kindan arc 3 books) and I really enjoyed it. Fiona is a wonderful character, and I enjoyed seeing her change, grow, and change the people around her.
Dragon's Time, however, is probably my least favorite in the Pern collective. Todd's style is a lot more straightforward than Anne's, with lots of dialog and little narrative; and even though they worked on this one together, it seems that Todd's style...more

This book is best summed up by quoting Doctor Who: "Wibbly-wobbly Timey-Wimey." I can see why Todd McCaffrey needed his mom's help in untangling the time travel mess he threaded (pun not intended) through this third-pass series. While this book was presented as the last, there were still a few random scenes that weren't really explained, making me think he's not done with Fiona et al.

Thousands of years after humans colonised Pern and genetically modified dragons to help them fight the dreaded Thread the world finds itself on the brink of disaster.

The Chronology of the Series
It's 508 AL (after landing) and takes place after Dragonsblood in the Dragonriders of Pern fantasy series.
The Story
Why bother? Just read the previous books and you'll have a good idea what's happening.
We have to go through another take of Lorana meeting Tenniz before she buries him.
My Take
This isn't even a real story! Instead, McCaffrey has created a mish-mash of flitting back-and-forth from time to time. Do not even try to make sense of what is going on as McCaffrey...more

This isn't my normal read, but I thought I would give it a go. I have not read any of Anne or her son Todd's previous books, but that did not matter this stood on it's own. However I think it makes a good addition to the series from what I have looked into. This book is actually book 23 in the series, so I've got quite a bit of catching up to do.

as always an anne mccaffrey comes into the house and what ever book i am reading goes to the side, as i pour through the text like it is a drug. I found that the books stands as always in my best esteem. The trill of the story, the drama of the characters the anticipation of the text. and the conclusion brings tears and hope, as all the books about pern tend to do. I love the dragons, the characters, and drama of Pern. This book falls with in the scope of expectation for these brilliant authors,...more
Best one in a while, certainly the best one that Todd has written. I'm still not entirely on board with his focus on little kids in positions of responsibility or Fiona's big heart going a bit far in the free love territory (she brings every stray into her family in some way, whether as a lover or a sister). But the heart of the story was there, great characters fighting to survive and triumph against such harsh odds with love, creativity and humor.

Having read a few negative reviews before reading this book I approached it with very low expectations, and think that I was therefore not as disappointed/annoyed by this book as I might otherwise have been
The first thing to note is that it is nowhere near the level of Anne McCaffrey's work. I think that this is partly because Todd spends very little time on the dragons themselves, an integral part of Pern! I adore Pern, and have loved Anne McCaffrey's dragons for over thirty years, but I could have asked my teen to write a Pern book and gotten a more mature storyline than Dragon's Time. Todd woos Pern fans with timed journeys like a creep with rohypnol preys on girls out for a great time at their favorite party spot. Then when he has them reeling and confused with the massive overdose of plot device, he beats them over the head with foreshadowing until they're all but comatose. He finishes taking...more
Another collaboration of mother and son and a continuation of Dragongirl. I liked this one more than I did Dragongirl simply because relationships had finally sorted themselves out and remained constant rather than trying to keep straight who was involved with whom. Not to be outdone tho, this one was very confusing in trying to keep time straight as there are a lot of people timing it all over the place in order for there to be enough dragons to fight Thread as numbers are diminishing rapidly....more
I found many aspects of the story line hard to follow, largely because characters (mostly Lorana) were traveling willy-nilly through time and space. Sometimes I couldn't keep track if they were going forward or backward, and how far back or forward.
Considering that throughout the Pern storyline (right from the beginning), timing it was always considered such a dangerous thing to do, it's surprising that everyone in this book seems to just blithely do it.

Anne McCaffrey never disappointed, and her son Todd is learning the rhthym of Pern. This book follows Lora a as she moves through time to try to save Pern n and its drogon's from the effects of the plague. Now that the plague has been eradicated and all the beings of Pern are safe from the illness, a way must be found to bring the number of dragons back up to full fighting strength for they down to less than a full weyer between all the weyers of the planet.

I was not going to read this sequel to the horrible "Dragongirl." I barely made it with sanity intact with that one, so I wasn't willing to risk this one. However, with Anne McCaffrey's name back in the author spot, I had to give it a go.
I was sorely, sorely disappointed. I feel like I have been swindled. Anne's influence was non-existent, except perhaps in the very last chapter. Then, in the afterward, it was made clear that it was mainly Todd's fault, so I will squarely place the blame on his...more

Ugh. I feel like this hot mess was nothing that even came close to the Pern I know and love. Redundant, and annoying - I felt it was written down. Characters had little to no personality and I just didn't feel drawn in to their story - at least not enough to care who they "love" when all that free love was being tossed about like cookies - ooh you're my sister now, ooh I love him and him and him and her and her and her - and yet NEVER did any of the characters actually address all this free love...more

I really enjoyed the latest addition in the Dragonriders of Pern series. It kept me up late a few nights in a row, as I couldn't put the book down!
This story picks up shortly after DragonHeart, with Fiona, Lorana, Kindan and T'Mar and many others dealing with the decimated loss of so many dragons to the plague. Lorana was able to help find a cure, but still had lost her dragon. She's one of the few people who can hear all dragons, so she was helped through her grief this way. The big problem, i...more

I have always been a lover of Anne's Pern novels. Since i read the first one, i have gone out of my way to read them all, buying up all the paperbacks i could find after reading the first one. that world, the dragon-riders, the harpers, have all fascinated me. however, when her son started writing with her, the books became less interesting. all they do in them is 'time it,' now. dragons dying of an unknown disease, time it. people getting sick for no reason and we can't find a cure? time it. ne...more
I love the basis of the Pern stories - humans working in concert with dragons to keep their world viable. However, the last few have had so much to do with time travel that they become confusing. Not to mention several times when a character will have an 'ah ha' moment but won't share the results with the reader - making this reader at least annoyed. I understand the need for some mysteries to be left until the end but these weren't at that level and dimmed my enjoyment of the story.

Red Star Rising has been my least favorite Pern novel for many years, but a couple of these third pass stories have tried my patience. This is another. The novel is very slow starting. As I noted with Dragongirl, I am growing tired of the third pass stories of death. This could be impacting my interest. I wrote: "I'd better see the end of the story arc with the next book or Todd will lose me as a reader." Fortunately, this story begins to turn upward after the slow start. The characters are enga...more
I haven't read a Pern novel since high school. So when I was looking for a book to rent from the library's catalog of e-books, I found this one. Honestly, I probably would have waited from something else to be available, but I was dying to read my first library eBook on my Nook!
As for the book itself, it was pretty good. I mean a book full of dragons has a lot going for it. Throw in some time travel and you've got the making of a very unique sci-fi idea. The characters are a little too similar...more

I love Pern and its dragons, and I'll probably read anything that is published about Pern. I realize that there's many inconsistencies within what's written and the world Anne created, but I can't remember them all, nor do I try. If it was something like a woman Impressing a bronze, though, I'd probably toss the book in disgust.

So sad reading this and knowing that Anne is gone.
I'll start out by saying that I had a hard time remembering everybody and keeping them all straight in my head. There are just so many characters in this early time frame. However, the book was very compelling. I finished it in less than a day.
As far as all the griping about the characters being tired all the time and 14 year olds having too much responsibility, think back to our own earlier time period. 14 year olds got married and had kids be...more

This book is set early in Pern's history, just after the plague and at a time when there are so few dragons who are ready and able to tackle the upcoming Threadfall threat. Lorana tries to find a way out of this dilemma, which means somehow going through time travel.
I'm not sure that this time travel was handled cleanly - when I started the book it was really confusing, but as I kept reading, it became somewhat more clear. But still, this is a rather ambiguous book which requires some mental gy...more

Maybe I'm just cranky this week, but this book annoyed me! I would have relished a good Pern tale. But I was confused half the time and bored some of the time. I felt the flow was very uneven. The book seemed to require too much knowledge of another book, one I wasn't even sure I had read. The incessant 'timing' that the plot required just added to the confusion. Best parts, though, were the use/appearance of the Dawn Sisters, and the part about trying to set up and run a new 'civilization' in a...more
I love the Pern books and have for thirty years. Dragongirl was the first one that disappointed me, and Dragon's Time is just as bad. When trying to analyze why I didn't like them, I noticed that these two books are almost completely dialogue. There is very little narrative to show the characters' actions and feelings. Instead of being part of the scene, the reader is there as the characters talk about what happened. Also, Fiona is not typical of McCaffrey characters. She's selfish and weak, and...more
I enjoyed the second half of this book much more than the first. The "time" part of the book made it confusing to read, but the characters were typical of Anne and Todd McCaffrey - well rounded, compelling and mostly people I'd either like to be more like or would like to know.
By the second half of the book I was so immersed in the characters that the random time lines did not bother me as much as they did the first half.

Anne McCaffrey was born on April 1st, 1926, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at 1:30 p.m., in the hour of the Sheep, year of the Fire Tiger, sun sign Aries with Taurus rising and Leo mid-heaven (which seems to suggest an early interest in the stars).
