I do not exaggerate when I say that absolutely nothing happens in this book to advance the overall plot, very disappointing. I would be annoyed if I had actually purchased this novel. Barely worth the read. The writing is trite and cliched in the extreme. Teenagers act like they are 50, which I guess I could accept had that been the case from the start of the series, but it wasn't.

Honestly I'm more interested in anything but the JACK and SCHUYLER relationship. I EVEN find mimi 10x more interesting, especially with oliver around we see a much kinder side to her, they're both as vulnerable as each other and as much as mimi denies that she can ever relate to oliver "red blood", she later on realized he's like her new safety blanker - i wish there was some romance there but since their thinking of rescuing kinsley that idea is down drain, but you never know :) I love kingsley...more

I've never liked the series very much, mainly because of those clothes digressions and useless descriptions, but the story wasn't so bad, so I kept reading. I thought the author was just showing off a bit and well, it's not like I know much about fashion, so it was a little annoying, but I could just skip that and give for granted she knew what she was talking about.
Now, here's the fifth book, and where are we? Italy, my country, apparently the new trend. Now, here's the fifth book, and where are we? Italy, my country, apparently the new trend. I knew from the beginning it would end bad..
I don't need perfection, but I hate when authors write about things pretending they know the subject well, when they don't.
She started giving names of places in Liguria and food and houses, she might as well have said "I'm so cultured while you don't even know what I'm talking about" (while she probably just used Wikipedia and Maps), but still, I couldn't complain, she wasn't saying anything wrong (kind of..).
Then Jack and Schuyler meet those armed man: "The modern world had brought them cell phones and Internet-cafes, yet they lived in several-hundred-year-old farmhouses with no heating, and continued to make their bread and sausage by hand"; No heating, seriously?! What are we, cavemen? I mean, old people like the old times, but "carry on traditions" is one thing and being "folk who had never left the villages" is another.
They almost sound like Amish people.
And those are young men, living in the North part of Italy, there is absolutely NO way they live like that..I'm from Milan, but I also have a house in that area, I know what I'm talking about (unlike her). Melissa is a few decades too late in her description.
Gosh, how much I hate stereotypes..
I almost forgot about the "flesh trade"..I won't even go there..I just hope people understand that's all fictional, even though the author probably doesn't.
I haven't even read a third of the book so far, I wonder what expects me next.
I'm tempted to just stop reading, but I've come so far and I'm curious about the plot..I guess we'll see.

I like the Blue Bloods series. The author has created a great group of characters and has invented a totally original and entertaining vampire mythology--not an easy thing to do these days. She writes great action scenes and always manages to infuse just the right amount of romance into her stories--romance that is not overwrought or manufactured.

Blue Bloods used to be my favorite book in the series, but now that I have read Misguided Angel, I had a change of heart.

This book was action-packed and fast-paced. Even at the start it was already heart-pounding, when Jack and Schuyler were trying to escape from the countess who "imprisoned" them. And speaking of Jack and Schuyler, I was so glad that the book didn't dwell with them too much. They had some romantic parts but those were very minimal and just right.

I was so glad that this book actually revolved with Mimi. She was my favorite character ever since due to her strong personality. Even if she used to be reckless and self-centered in the preceeding books, she proved that there was more to her in Misguided Angel. Mimi was elected as the new Reagent of the New York coven since she was the decendant of the Charles, the Regis who was still missing. She was struggling to keep her coven intact despite of the threats of exposing the vampires to the Red Bloods. Even if Mimi's soul was old, she was still trapped in her teenage shell at the moment so most of her jurisdiction didn't trust her capabilities to rule. But she did her best to gain their trust, even if it meant sacrificing her social life.

It was also nice for Mimi and Oliver to work together, setting aside their differences to find a missing vampire, and prevent the coven from disbanding. I was touched by the gesture of Oliver, secretly giving Mimi his talisman, which protected her from the Blood Spell, and in turn, Mimi lowered her pride to thank him sincerely. Who would've thought that could happen?

Bringing a new strong character to the series, in the form of Deming Chen, was like a breathe of fresh air. I've first encountered her character during the Four-Hundred Ball, but I thought she was just another useless character. It turned out that she was one of the greatest Venators in the world and she never failed to solve a crime. She was even willing to sacrifice her own life by doing the Death Walk just to seek the truth.

Sadly, Kingsley Martin was not here, but his name was mentioned a lot of times. It was a relief to know that Oliver found a possible way for Mimi to rescue Kingsley from the subvertio. I really hope that in the succeeding books, Kingsley will be rescued.

To sum it all, this book was amazing---the best in the series so far. Now I'm really looking forward to the next book.

The fifth book of Melissa de La Cruz's Blue Bloods series, Misguided Angel, just released this week. I've been looking forward to this book since I read the first four earlier this year.. and loved them. This book, however, was a disappointment. It was a mediocre filler book.

Why so bad? Well...The narration no longer alternates as frequently as it once did. I found myself bored following the same characters for long stretches of the storytelling when it once jumped between them so frenetically....more

I realize that this book begins to open more questions than answering them but I throughly enjoyed that because it kept you guesssing and it brought forth an element that hasn't been seen in a Vampire book before. Review:
De la Cruz continues with an interesting story line. Although it's not packed with as much silver blood drama as The Van Alen Legacy, it is still quite gripping. Honestly, I think having a red blood as an enemy was an excellent move. We have come to expect a silver blood behind the trouble, but a mere human? Plus, we, the readers, need a less flashy threat after the Lucifer ordeal from the last book. However, as I said, this did not make Misguided Angel any less interesting. Except for a few sections, I found myself quite intrigued bu the installment.

Now, there were some factors that I disliked about this book. In all previous installments, each chapter is told by a different point of view, switching between Mimi, Schuyler, and Bliss. Misguided Angel is instead divided into four sections. The first follows Schuyler, the second follows Mimi, the third follows a new vampire named Deming, and the final section is a mix of all three. Now, I have read in several reviews that many disliked the former style, saying it was more difficult to get into the story or it gave them character whiplash. Personally, I preferred that style. For one, it kept the story fresh in my mind, even if I needed to put the book down for several days. Secondly, I wasn't stuck with a character I didn't really care for for several pages on end. Honestly, I could not wait until Schuyler's section was finished. Don't get me wrong. She's not a dreadful character. I simply don't like reading about her all that much.

Speaking of Schuyler, I am glad that Schuyler's story was more vampire/blue blood related than romance driven. So if you are a Jack/Schuyler fan, you may be a bit disappointed since they aren't given much romantic time. The other bit I disliked is the new POV character. Again, I don't hate her, but she ended up getting on my nerves a bit, especially with her "reading the aura" crap. However, the readers that enjoy the venator adventures should enjoy her tale. I have to say I did enjoy the story around her. I simply found her not to my liking.

Overall though, Melissa de la Cruz produced another entertaining read. The plot wasn't highly charged as some of the others, but that doesn't make it any less fantastic. De la Cruz keeps you riveted and introduces more twists and turns that will keep you glued to the page. Even after its fifth installment, there are still so many paths left to discover in Blue Bloods.(less)

I'm starting to lose my interest in this series, the first couple of books were fine and kept my attention but now I'm starting to feel the "meh" kick in. I actually stopped reading this book to start and finish "this is not a test"

I had another long ride home last week for Thanksgiving and listened to the audio-book version of Misguided Angel during the drive. I was excited to catch up with Schuyler & Jack, but I was surprised to enjoy the interactions between Oliver and Mimi even more. Mimi came out of her glamour shell to step up into her new role of elected Regent quite well (even though her vamp society is crumbling around her; it was nice to see the inter-workings of her group) and it was bitter-sweet to see her and Oliver lean on each other while in their heart-broken state. Almost foreshadowing to something "more" in the future of the series . . . IF she doesn't find a way to bring Kingsley back.

I was a little lost about 1/3 into the story since the reader is closely following Jack & Schuyler's mission in pursuing her Grandfather Lawrence's study of the guards & gates of Hell . . . and then the story cuts to Mimi, back in New York, with new characters joining in to discover the truth behind the missing vampires. It was like two major stories going on at the same time, which did eventually intertwine in the end, but threw me out of the loop for a bit. Overall, I highly enjoyed getting back into the Upper East-Side richy high school scene again after the last couple of books had us traveling the world and dealing with family deaths & disappearances.

Likes: I cracked up listening to the audio book voice actor doing a human conduit's voice (Jemma) . . . since it sounds IDENTICAL to a friend of mine! Too Fun!

Dislikes: I just wish we would have gotten more of one story instead of having it split into two.

Even more than Van Alen Legacy, this book reminded me of those terrible placeholder episodes; just an excuse to get all of the pieces in their designated place (Alexandria, in this case). I fail to see the point of the wild goose chases in all three parts; the chase through the jungle in part one was especially Lost-esque. Surely there was a better way to get everyone from A to B. I feel like de la Cruz is experimenting with storytelling styles in the most recent sequels. All of the books have had multiple narrators, in a sense (yes they're all 3rd person, but we follow different people and glimpse into their thought processes along the way). The Van Alen Legacy was slightly more organized --instead of following each character at random, Schuyler, Mimi, and Bliss's perspectives switched from chapter to chapter (which was frustrating in its own way, given the ever-present cliffhangers). This time, the novel is split into three parts, each following a different character --Schuyler, Mimi, and Deming -- and an epilogue setting them all up for the sequel. As I said, these variations feel like an experiment; perhaps criticism that the last book felt disjointed contributed to the decision to set this one up differently. I think there's something to be said for experimentation, though I'm personally not crazy about either experiment. Hopefully once everyone is in the same country, the character shifts will seem less jarring.

I'm not crazy about introducing more new characters/beings (star born twins? The hell? I know I promised to stop questioning the math, but where do they fit with the 400? And has Paul the demon spawn been alive since the 1400s?) . I'm glad Bliss and the werewolves have evidently been shipped to their own spin-off. I'm confident that I can resist the urge to pick those up.

Try as I might, I can't bring myself to quit this series. The concept continues to intrigue me, and so help me, I want to know how it's going to play out. I sort of hope this goes the route of Gossip Girl and gets made into a tv series...that story improved remarkably on the small screen, and I think this series would benefit from the same treatment. Less placeholder nonsense, and more "actual stuff," as it were. (less)

I don't know why I keep reading these books. I guess I keep assuming that each one will be the last, when each one really is just a set up for another sequel. Enough with series already! Things are getting more and more serious for the New York Coven of Blue Bloods. One of their number has been kidnapped, and rather there has been a threat that she will be burned alive. The problem is that no one seems to know who could possibly want to do this, and the Red Bloods directly bonded with the Blue Bloods are the most likely suspects. The questions is whether they really could do that.

One of their number has been kidnapped, and rather there has been a threat that she will be burned alive. The problem is that no one seems to know who could possibly want to do this, and the Red Bloods directly bonded with the Blue Bloods are the most likely suspects. The questions is whether they really could do that.

Mimi Force, who has taken on the Regency of the Committee of Blue Bloods finds herself with some much welcome distraction from her personal life. Her brother and fated lover Jack has run off with Schuyler Van Alan. Mimi ends up finding a surprising ally in Schuyler's human familiar, Oliver.

Oliver is now working for the repository and has come to be considered one of the leading researchers of their generation. He might have the exact skills she needs to sort this problem out quickly. The video that was released of the Blue Blood victim's abduction is being played off as a hoax to promote an upcoming film, but they still only have four days to find her before she is killed.

While they find themselves on the trail, Oliver and Mimi run out of time only to find themselves back in the same situation again with another Blue Blood victim ... this time a male. Mimi decides to bring in specialized Venator help from Japan. in the form Deming.

As all of this is going on, Schuyler and Jack are in Italy. They have taken refuge with the Eurpopean Coven under the auspices of the Countess. The only problem is their protection seems to have turned into a prison. When they head out on the run, they land themselves in the center of a Red Blood mystery with ties to one of the gates of Hell that is centered in Florence. The only problem is that the Seven Gates are supposed to be only protected by Blue Bloods. Where is the Blue Blood that was meant to be guarding this Gate?

The series is taking on a new level of complexity and interest as these fallen-angels-turned-vampires try to maintain their millenia-old culture. Things are definitely changing with this newest generation, and it is becoming clear that the Silver Bloods are not the only enemies. The human Red Bloods and the Blue Bloods themselves are proving to be threats themselves.

The author set out to write an epic tale with this series, and it is definitely starting to achieve this goal with the more recent volumes. The characters are complex, and it is not always easy to see who is good and who is bad because good and evil varies in degrees. I am definitely looking forward to the next book, which is due out in October.(less)

Overall, this has been a series that I felt more drawn into as it progressed. After reading Blue Bloods, I was not sure I wanted to continue, but I did based on the recommendation of friends. Overall, this has been a series that I felt more drawn into as it progressed. After reading Blue Bloods, I was not sure I wanted to continue, but I did based on the recommendation of friends. I am so glad I did. As the series progressed, I found myself more and more drawn into the world that Melissa De La Cruz created. I found the characters complicated and interesting. The line between good and evil is being tested, explored and even challenged.

Now, I am waiting with the highest level of anticipation for the release of the next book in the series because I cannot wait to see what happens.

Review:
At the age of fifteen, Schuyler Van Alen learns that she is part of a legacy with a long history that she must unravel in order to save herself and her friends. Throughout the series I find myself feeling sympathy for Schuyler. She consistently seems to be the person who knows the least about the vampire world and no one who appears willing to sit down and give her the information. This lack of a willing mentor seems unfair especially since her unique creation means she cannot access the past life memories that the other vampires her age can. However, following the person with the least amount of knowledge of what is happening and why can be frustrating. Then Schuyler's grandfather arrives. He is willing to help her learn, but Schuyler decides to focus on things other then her lessons. I understand that she is a teenager and realistically does not want to study all the time, but within the confines of the story we, as readers, rely on her to be able to tell us what is going on. But this balance between sympathy and frustration exemplifies the complicated nature of Melissa De La Cruz's characters. We as readers are constantly being challenged to determine who is good, who is not good, and why are the characters the way they are. Is their nature (whether good or bad) fixed and unchanging or is it a choice they make?

In later books, I think Melissa De La Cruz address the readers need for more information than Schuyler can provide beautifully by bringing in other narrators. These other narrators allow Melissa to create a more complex and interesting story. We as reader also get to see more dimensions of the characters. I think Mimi Force is probably the character that best benefits from being able to tell her story in her own voice. From Schuyler's perspective, Mimi has one dimension. She is a B****. Schuyler is not necessarily wrong. Mimi does not like and feels threatened by Schuyler, so Mimi does not treat Schuyler very well. But when Mimi gets to tell her own story in her own voice, the reader starts to see that there is more to Mimi than that. The reader can see Mimi's frustration at watching her bondmate repeatedly pine after Gabrielle (Schuyler's mother) and now Schuyler while Mimi has stayed dedicated to their bond. This insight may not justify Mimi's behavior, but it makes her a more sympathetic and interesting character.

The influence and importance of the vampires' past lives is a recurring theme throughout the series. Each character had different names in their previous lives, which means that most characters have multiple names they are known by. Melissa De La Cruz utilizes flashbacks to tell some of the important stories from the past, however which character's story she is telling is not always clear until the end of the book. This delayed reveal in order to heighten suspense can make it confusing to connect the past life character name with the modern-day character. I was hoping that Blue Bloods: Keys to the Repository would help to clear up some of this confusion. And the book did to a point, but there are still some flashbacks and names that I find confusing. However, I feel confident that the answers to these confusions are coming soon, and I am waiting anxiously to read the next book to learn more.

I think the book in the series I was most disappointed with was Bloody Valentine. This book contains three short stories that are supposed to shed light on specific aspects of the Blue Bloods story. The first story tells us how Oliver moved on or was cured (for lack of a better word) of his bond to Schuyler that was formed through the Sacred Kiss. I appreciated seeing the end to that because I want to see Oliver move on, be able to be happy and hopefully find love. I like him as a character. But the method to cure him was provided by a witch, a mythical creature not mentioned in the Blue Blood series to this point. Is that really what every human familiar should do after their vampire has left them?

The second story was the most disappointing for me. It was the story of how Allegra (Schuyler's mother) met and fell in love with Schuyler's father. What disappointed me was the abrupt ending. We as readers did not learn that much. I ended up with more questions than answers. I wanted to know how they ended up together and what happened to Schuyler's father and mother. What events lead to her ending up in the coma. Now I concede it is possible that those answers are coming in the series, but this story felt unnecessary since it did not provide answers to very many (if any) questions.

The third story tells the story of Jack and Schuyler's bonding ceremony. In many ways this story did not make sense to me. In the story, Schuyler is forced to give Jack a ring that will bind his powers as long as she loves him. They manage to break the ring's power but then immediately fall back in love with each other? That did not work for me. If she fell out of love with him enough to break the rings power, what does that say about their love? (less)

Oliver has let go. Schuyler and Jack are now together trying to complete the Van Allen Legacy.
Meanwhile back in NYC, new officials have been elected with non other than Mimi Force to lead them.
Mimi is mourning the loss of Kingsley, which leads her to team up with a most unlikely for an ally.
A video is released threatening the exposure of the blue bloods, as well as their downfall. While Mimi has to maintain the crumbling empire and at the same time keep these rumors to a minimum, she hires Demi...more

In this fifth book of the Blue Bloods Series, we still see the text divided between three female, lead characters, but, this time, each woman has her own section, something I much preferred. This way, the book felt more cohesive. Though, in a way, it could be argued that the set-up resembled that of three mini-novels in one, there was still the obvious ties that bound the three storylines together; de la Cruz merely set it up so that the reader could finish one thought, one character's point of...more In this fifth book of the Blue Bloods Series, we still see the text divided between three female, lead characters, but, this time, each woman has her own section, something I much preferred. The first section followed Schuyler and Jack as they realized their saving grace - the protection of the European Coven - was actually more like a prison. As they tried to escape, they met a priest who promised to take them to the fourth gate and discovered a whole, new enemy - Lucifer's half demon/half human children. Meanwhile, in New York, Mimi is still fit to be tied that Jack left her, blowing off their bonding, and mourning the loss of Kingsley. However, she's also been named Regent of the New York Coven... just as a new threat emerges towards the vampires. Someone is kidnapping vampire teens and threatening to burn them alive over the internet for all the world to see in an attempt to expose the vampire conspiracy. To help her fight off this threat and to protect her threatened position as Regent, Mimi turns to Oliver, of all people, and Deming Chen, a young yet extremely respected Venator. Between the three of them, they must uncover a conspiracy that, in the end, leads back to the demon children Schuyler and Jack discovered in Italy.

Like always, I enjoyed Schuyler and Jack's relationship, found the mystery encircling the vampire's intriguing, and found the book to be fast paced and exciting. However, unlike with past novels in the Blue Blood Series, I didn't entirely hate Mimi in Misguided Angel. Her usually smug, annoying personality was tempered by Oliver calling her on her crap... and Mimi actually respecting and liking him because of it, by her new ability to put others before herself, and by her lack of attention to the superficial. Finally, she's truly becoming the rival that Schuyler (and, by extension, Jack) deserve.

As for the new female, lead character (we'd briefly heard of her before at the 400 Ball), she was alright. I didn't love her; I didn't hate her, but, at the same time, I see promise. We just need to learn more about her, and I'm curious to see what happens between her and her sister and the Lennox twins - both sets of twins star born and, hence, not automatically bound to another angel/vampire. However, with that said, I'm also curious about what Bliss is up to. We heard nothing about her in this book, and I'd also like an update on Allegra and Michael (especially Allegra).
