Friedrich
When Friedrich Schneider was eight years old Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. Some Germans welcomed the new leader, but not Friedrich or his father and mother - because the Schneiders were Jews.
This is a stark and tragic story showing how the Nazis in Germane stripped the Jews of their rights and then destroyed them. It is a terrible indictment of racial hatred.

I took four years of German classes in high school. German I was a small class, only ten or so people. For German II and III I was the only one that continued, so I had A PRIVATE TUTOR essentially for two years.
As a result, we probably did a lot of things most kids wouldn't get away with in class (by "we" I mean "I," of course) - like listening to OpIvy during finals (cos my teacher was bored and since I'd listened to music while I was studying IT ONLY MADE SENSE to listen to it during the test,...more

In this excelent book the author, Hans Peter Richter, writes about his life and his friend's life during the Holocaust and before. The plot isn't largely a plot, if that makes any sense, because it mostly talks about the evolution of the severity of the Holocaust. This story took place in the 1930's to the 1940's in Germany. The setting seems very real and you can almost picture each moment. I belive that the theme of this story is "Treat others the way you want to be treated.

You may be inclined to ask what more can be said about the horrors of the holocaust. If so, then read this book.
While somewhat slow in pace, hanging in there will bring reward. In fact, the pace appears deliberate and analogous to the creeping dangers of the Nazi party, that when in full horrific elevation many looked back and realized the day to day progress as one denial after another slowly happened to Jews.
This story is told by Hans whose family is struggling. Out of work in a post WWII Germ...more

Plot Summary - short and easy read about the Holocaust.. one of my favorite subjects to read about - this was my "published before you were born" book: published 1987. The narrator is German and his best friend is Jewish. The narrator tells the story through his perspective, and the discimination that takes place againist the Jews is described. This story reminded me a bit of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas because the characters in the story are young boys and they don't completely understand wh...more

The nameless narrator recounts a series of memories that illuminate Friedrich's story as a Jew in German society during the thirties and early forties. There is no concentration camp or ghetto in this narrative, but rather the gradual discrimination that the family endures, never believing that there is a real threat; never in this century could people revert to the savagery of the middle ages.
The narrator explains what he did, what he thought, how the friendship grew & changed, but never se...more

"Friedrich" written by Hans Peter Richter, is an inspirational book about a young boy and his best friend who is a Jew. Since a young age they have been inseperable and have faced all of their problems together. Unfortunately they are forced to fend for themselves when Hitler and the Nazi party rise to power. Things are changing for the Jews and they are being discriminated against and treated very unfairly. As Friedrich and his best friend mature, they are wanting to expierence new things, but...more

This was another book that I had read during primary school when I was in Y6. It primarily deals with the persecution of the Jews during the Holocaust. It gives you an insight into how life was like for Jews during the World War and the hardship they faced.

This book has an interesting plot that moves through the years of the Holocaust through two families eyes. The identifiable setting is the Holucaust known for its inhumane and horrifying events. The themes are unforgetable and worthwhile, one of them is friendship. The consistent and believable characters show resilience and human nature as they live and lose loved ones throughout the book. The engaging writing style keeps you reading to find out the fate of each character. The point of view is...more

I read this book in English, it was one of the few school books I enjoyed. I learnt many things about prejudice and discrimination against the Jews during World War II. It shows us how the Jews were prosecuted and treated unfairly while putting in all the the emotions inside.

Friedrich by Hans Peter Richter is a wonderful, yet emotional book for me personally. This story is told in first person. The main character, Friedrich has so much sincerity about his experience during the Holocaust you would think you were there. As the narrator, Friedrich takes your imagination to another place, capturing moments of his past. This book made me feel like I had to be very thankful for my childhood, because Friedrich struggled from proverty and disrespect throughout the entire st...more
As of lately, I have tended to avoid this kind of books, as it is very difficult to reinvent the wheel and come up with something original, compelling and that catches one's imagination. This book does precisely that. The points of view of the different families, the agony of the fall and the going forward of the action, makes it a must-have book for anybody interested in the impact of NS in Germany's daily life. The fact that the book is relatively short is only a plus, as the subject gets cove...more
I myself am half-German and have read a lot of books on the Second World War and the Holocaust. This was definitly one of the books that touched me the most. It was so sad and horrible.
The book was written in 1961 for the first time and was written by Hans Peter Richter. The book is written from the perspective of a young boy, Christian, who lives during the Third Reich. He lives in the same building as the Jewish boy Friedrich. The more power Hitler gets the more problems Friedrich has. He get...more

After finishing Der Vorleser, I was determined to try another novel in German. Damals war es Friedrich (or simply Friedrich, if you're reading the English version) appealed to me because it was already on my bookshelf, relatively short, and written for young adults (which made it pretty easy to read). The story is certainly a moving one, told from a young boy's perspective. I appreciated the descriptions of how Germany turned into Nazi Germany, not over night, but through small changes over time...more
I read this in my German class in high school...oh many years ago. This book has stayed with me since. It is such a powerful book. Amazing stories and horrific stories make the news but this book tells a story of normal families. It is a scary book. Scary in the sense of how easy our lives can change and how easy it is to sit back and watch wrongs being done when your life or the life of your families are in jeopardy. And scary in the sense that you can try your best and be kind, but that doesn'...more
Gosh, it's so hard saying that I liked a Holocaust book. This was a good one though. Similar plot as several others in this genre, but Friedrich is such a rich character, it feels new. The different thing about this book is the use of the narrator. The story is told completely from his perspective. He's a German boy who joins the Volks group and is just trying to grow up without a lot of drama. His family stays very loyal to Friedrich's family until the end. Other than that, you learn little abo...more
so i kick off my holocaust unit with this novel. it's an interesting alternative to jumping into anne frank and that whole "dramatic irony" lesson. the thing about this book is that it's translated from its original german which makes the language almost dangerously matter-of-fact. for kids that don't know much about the holocaust, that can be scary. they have no propaganda telling them "nazism is bad." therefore, it becomes my responsibility. i'm kinda over it.
I like Friedrich was a great book for it's time period. But, certainly not Hans Peter Richter's best books. I do say he is a fascinating author. But, this book wasn't my all time favorite. It kind of confused me a lot towards the ending. Also, the ending was so quickly ended. But, I guess the book was okay. Apparently, it wasn't my genre at all. I thought they should of wrote it from Friedrich's point of view. Since the events were effecting him more than the narrator in this story. If it Friedr...more

This is a unique young-adult novel about the Holocaust, showing the bystander's point of view, instead of the victim/survivor's. Because the narrator is never given a name, the story takes on an Everyman feel, which is truly effective in helping to answer the question many people, including kids, ask while studying the Holocaust: how could this persecution and death happen on such a large scale?
The slow, sure denigration then destruction of a German Jewish family told through the eyes of their non-Jewish neighbours, particularly their son, in the years following Hitler's rise to power. Told with with a clear, unemotional prose that is devastating in the apparent simplicity of its storytelling. 'Friedrich' brings home the human cost of extreme prejudice and mob politics like no other book I've read. It's suitable for anyone above the age of about 12.
When i started reading this book i wasnt expecting it to be as interesting as it was. The book is about a jewish boy named Friedrich and his family along with the family of non-jews who are friends throughout the novel. The book lets the reader understand what kind of trouble and hardship jews and non-jews alike had to go through during World War II.
A very powerful story of pre and WWII Germany. It starts as a series of vignettes of two families; One Christian and one Jewish, who live in the same apartment house. The two boys are the same age and they and their families become friends but the prejudice that would fuel the Nazi party and the Holocaust is already starting. I find often that the children's books about the Holocaust are often more compelling since they can be so straight forward. Horrible in a way that teaches but does not lect...more
