As ever, reading O'Brian is like meeting up with an old friend. In this one, the unfolding of the plot is slow and somewhat predictable—it's more like talking with an old friend solely of the past, reliving old memories and not learning anything new about one another. There are none of the fireworks of the earlier books, no huge twists or turns. I found this particular book disappointing. Not a lot happens, and what does happen seems flat. There's lots of good stuff with Stephen, but the getting-caught-in-adultery storyline for Aubrey (long awaited and well deserved!) lacks impact.
It's a sort of a-bit-bleargh middle series book. O'Brian can do better.

19 in the series. Really great historical fiction. I listened to some Horatio Hornblower novels this year as well and while those are good Patrick O'Brians two main characters are the best.

Again, if you love him, skip it. Allow Aubrey to get his flag in your imagination.
