While I liked the premise of this book (ie the notion of a woman who has lost herself to husband and kids reconnecting to her true passion and transforming her life in the process) I just found it a little superficial in how the main character Kate dealt with the issues raised. I'm not sure a mother would be so blase about her thirteen year old daughter chopping all her hair off and colouring it black or wagging school on a regular basis. I also didn't really like the way Kate regularly provided...more

First of all, I received this book as part of an early reviewers programme. In a similar vein to the main character, I'll list what I liked and didn't like about this book:
Likes:
1. It was Australian. Reading an Aussie book is like slipping on a pair of favourite jeans. You know what David Jones is, you can easily picture places in the book.
2. Very easy read. Despite a death in the family while reading this, I could pick it up and actually remember when I was.
3. The characters of the children (Le...more

One that women in their mid to late thirties will readily identify with, as they try to have it all and do it all. Kae is a talented photographer who has abandoned her career for family responsibilities, but when she is offered a temporary position at a magazine as a food photographer, can she cope with the corporate life? With a mother about to remarry (Kate's father as it happens), a sister who is heavily pregnant (but her husband has shot through) and a teenage daughter whose every trauma is...more
Completely predictable, had many moments where I was convinced I could write a better book (this, however has yet to be proven!). Heidke reads like a cosmopolitan short story with lots of irrelevant descriptions on how she looked "I wore my hair up in a pony tail" or "I matched my black patent shoes with my new black pencil skirt. Not half bad for a stressed unloved mum!" *note these are just examples, although believe me it is no exaggeration*

This is a well written, well set out and easily read book. Kate, married to Matthew and Mother of two is struggling to come to terms with what her life has become. Kate's life seems to fall apart around her, her sister is loopy, her Mum has a bombshell that really rocks the boat, her teenage daughter has suddenly become a teenager-with a vengeance. Kate's husband seems to be drawing further and further away from her, her boss at work is an egotistical, chauvinistic bully. And to top it all off,...more
Going by most of the other ratings, I guess I'm a bit out of step with other readers. On the plus side it was easy to read, well-written and had some funny parts. I just didn't really like Kate that much - she seemed ditzy and didn't really appreciate what she had. Maybe this just isn't my genre (although I do like some chick lit).

women readers, probably over 30
I liked this better than her first book (Lucy Springer Gets Even). Kate is a sympathetic character and I think everyone can identify with the difficulty of trying to achieve competing dreams in their life. The humour is a real winner here, too, and orginal: they're not jokes you've heard a hundred times.

After growing up in Brisbane, I ran away to Sydney, via London, and worked in book and magazine publishing. After many years living in the inner west, I was surprised one morning to wake up and find myself married with three children and living on the North Shore.
