A wonderful read that captured my imagination as a child. One of the survivors of a clear-out of shelves decades ago.

Treece uses a couple of Icelandic sagas as his sources to tell the story of Vikings from Iceland and Greenland who discovered America in the tenth century. This is a wonderful novel, full of heroic and adventurous characters pushing their limits. A wonderful thing for a child to read.

If you dispute that the Vikings discovered America, I'd suggest you just look at a map. These guys

Henry Treece (22 December 1911 – 10 June 1966) was a British poet and writer, who worked also as a teacher, and editor. He is perhaps best remembered now as a historical novelist, particularly as a children's historical novelist, although he also wrote some adult historical novels.
