"You are deluded, Romeo. Vampires do not have the capability to love. They are heartless."

The Capulets and the Montagues have some deep and essential differences. Blood differences. Of course, the Capulets can escape their vampire fate, and the Montagues can try not to kill their undead enemies. But at the end of the day, their blood feud is unstoppable. So it's really qui...more

Romeo & Juliet is the classic tragic love story. Whether they've read the play or not, everyone knows exactly what happens. I'm a big fan of William Shakespeare. I feel that his his plays transcend time and readers can easily find situations and themes in them that apply to modern life. I am also a big mash-up fan. I believe that the current trend of adding monsters to classic works is an entertaining way of dusting them off and wowing new readers. But mash-ups need to do more than add monst...more

REVIEW

This book mixes the classic Romeo and Juliet story with the current vampire trend. While I have read other retellings of classics, this is the first one I’ve read that takes on vampires.
I liked the way that Claudia Gabel kept the setting as the late 1500’s, but did not write it with Shakespearean-speak. I was easily able to read everything and understand it. I am glad that the time frame was not changed to the present times, because it would have totally changed the classic.

What if all the Capulets were vampires, and all the Montagues were vampire hunters? Juliet Capulet is about to turn 16, and on that day she will become a vampire--a thing she dreads and abhors. Romeo Montague comes from a family that has spent their life hunting Capulets, until the Prince's recent peace forced both families to make nice. That suits Romeo fine, as he has no interest in killing anyone. Then he meets Juliet at the Capulet ball, when she is still human, and the story takes its cours...more

With the growing popularity of 'cross-over' classics ('Pride & Prejudice & Zombies', for example), and the subject of vampires sweeping YA bookshelves everywhere, 'Romeo and Juliet and Vampires' is an amusing clash of both of these worlds. At first, I was a bit apprehensive, as the onslaught of vampire books following 'Twilight' have produced some less-than-amazing novels and series. However, my curiosity got the better of me, and a few hours later, I finished the book.

They can sustain their immortality that way BUT, they lose their strength. Vlad has been impaled. His brother took over (Prince Radu). Radu believes in peace between the waring mortals and the vampires. Juliet is commanded by her parents to marry the second in command, Count Paris who is the right hand man to Radu. I know what you're thinking, another classic with a vampire twist!? Let me just say, do not judge this book by your skepticism. If I had done that, I would have missed out on a brilliantly written classic, with a deadly twist. Claudia Gable did a wonderful job at keeping this classic true to it's form and adding a wonderful twist, or two of her own.

The Capulets are powerful vampires, while the Montagues are the vampire hunters. Juliet hails from the powerful vampire family and Romeo comes from a...more

Picked out for me by a laughing nephew who knew I had read and loathed Twilight. Reads rather like an extended version of one of those writing exercises assigned to high school students, when they must rewrite Shakespeare in modern English. Amusing, but lacks the outright humor of, say, the superior Jane Austen/monster spoofs (Pride & Prejudice & Zombies being my favorite). Vampires here obviously infected by the Anne Rice/Stephenie Meyer wangst bug which has apparently permanently taint...more

The Montagues are vampire hunters. Of course they didn't like each other! I loved the gimmick of this, and am still waiting for the perfect 'take over' book. I wanted more lines from Shakespeare -- after all, he did get co-author billing here. But this felt rushed; it didn't have some of the charm of the play...I k...more

This book was very hmm...
Well, I've always liked the story of Romeo & Juliet so I figured vampires would make the plot more exciting.
I'll start with the pros of this book. I wanted to know how this story was going to be told. Very quick read. It wasn't a forced read since I was slightly entertained... but pretty good metaphors in there.

Now the cons; The couple just didn't appeal to me. Their personalities were frustrating. There wasn't enough passion for me. Perhaps since I'm a young adult...more

The classic tragic love story of Romeo & Juliet gets the paranormal treatment in this adaptation. The Capulets are vampires, the Montagues are slayers, and that sets up the feud between the families. I take issue with the inconsistent writing style, the extreme liberties taken with the basic story (very little was the same, the names were the same and there was a balcony scene and some of the major events were tweaked to fit the story), but way too much was changed (THE ENDING!!!) It was no...more

This is not the type of book that I normally pick out to read. Especially after my mom read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and was cringing the entire book. But I have to say, I actually had fun reading this. I think it may be because I'm not a huge "classics" reader, so I'm not going to be offended by the changes that Claudia made to the original script. It only took me a day to read, and I enjoyed revisiting the world of Romeo and Juliet. This twist on it just made all the more fu...more

My Summary: Juliet's family, the Capulets, are some of the most bloodthirsty and vicious vampires there are. Yet, Juliet - still a human for a short time - is kind and firmly against harming others. Only problem? She's going to turn into a vampire soon, and she only has two options: Kill and become a vampire, or die a slow and very painful death.

She's entertaining the latter option until Romeo, a Montague, comes along. Coming from a family dedicated to killing her kind, especially her family, th...more

The story was nice. But... There's something missing or lacking that's why I wasn't able to fully enjoy. I don't say that the story is ugly. It was indeed nice and the way the author portray the story is good as well. Whatever that missing part is, I can't really tell what it is.

But, I enjoy it when Juliet and romeo where together. I was giggling when I read the part when they first met. I enjoy reading their scenes. They were lovable and cute. I really like Romeo and Juliet's love story.

A quick read. For me, this was perfecting reading for my train ride to work - I don't get so involved that I miss my stop, but it's entertaining enough that I forget that I'm wedged between two sweating armrest-hoggers.

I thought the writing was a bit off. It's strange - you'd think that deciding to modernize the language would have freed Claudia up to make it sound fresh, but it didn't. It felt almost as if I was reading a piece of fan fiction.

Let me give you some info on the plot now: Romeo is...more

Review from Linny's Literature

From the moment I saw the cover and read the title I knew that this would be a light read, but for the cheap Borders-goodbye price, I decided I didn't mind. I've seen quite a few of these "classics with a side of paranormal fun" books cropping up lately, but this is the first one I've read. Got a lame story? Add some vampires to spice things up!

To be honest, I have never liked the classic Romeo & Juliet. That ending was not okay, I don't care if it is a classic...more

Claudia Gabel combines this legacy of a tale with the current vampire trend. Gabel’s attempt at creating an new age story with William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is quite entertaining. I having never been a personal fan, of the Romeo & Juliet, find myself quite impressed with this new story. Not only did Gabel find created a twist that proves quite entertaining; she also manages to rewrite Romeo and Juliet that is much more easily read than the original. Having already deciphered the c...more

Romeo & Juliet & Vampires is a good book especially if you are a huge fan of Shakespeare. The only reason why I began reading this book is when in my school, Romeo and Juliet became our class reading book. I started this book with the intention of thinking it would keep me interested in the original book but I was wrong, because instead of keeping me interested in the original book I fell in love with this more than Shakespeare's and I'm glad Claudia Gabel was able to allow me to experie...more

Just wanted to say few things. I saw it recently in a puplic book store and i couldnt hold my shelf not to grab it!

So in one hand you have the classic novella/story with Romeo and Juliet and in the other hand you have vampires (my favourite creatures from the fantasy genre) if you mix those two you have this lovely book.

You know the deal Juliet and Capulets family are indeed the vampires which ofcource lives the century with drinking blood from animals (human blood is not allowed over here but w...more

Juliet is the only daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet, who were the vicious hired killers of Vlad Tepes before his downfall. In a few days, her 16th birthday will mark the end of her human life as she becomes a vampire like the rest of her family, a destiny that disgusts her. Romeo is the youngest son of the Montague vampire slaying family who has never had a chance to kill a vampire himself, and with the new Prince insisting on a peace treaty, he will be spared from taking the life of another cr...more

My main issue with this book is how much it deviates from the original. I have no problem with classics mixed with paranormals, but I felt that this was just too much. Beside turning Romeo and Juliet into a novel, which wasn't too bad since readers would have a harder time relating to a play, a lot of the plot and writing style was changed. I can see the basic plot still remains, but overall, I think this book changed the original play a little too much for me to enjoy this mash-up.

The one-star rating is for the cover...it was hideous, i'm sorry. Because the reason i bought this book was for the story(my sister and i were recommended this book). I'm only at the fourth chapter, though... i'll be editing this review when i'm done :))

EDIT!

I have to say, the cover didn't do justice to the story because it was nothing short of AWESOME! I like the way the author made the twists but still kept the actual essence on Shakespeare's classic... i will surely read this book again :)

This is an adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet" in which Juliet is a vampire and Romeo is a human. Much of the beauty of the original text is the language and style Shakespeare used and I found that eliminating that left the story somewhat dry. Also, I did not like the character changes Gabel made, especially with Benvolio. Shakeaspeare portrayed him as a peace-loving person who always avoided conflicts and Gabel turned him into a character much more like Mercutio.

I enjoyed the imaginative re-write of Shakespeare's classic. Lord and Lady Capulet as uncaring bloodsuckers was hilarious. Based on the author's description, I pictured a cross between Gerard Depardieu and Nosferatu for Count Paris. I wish the nurse had been more like the nurse in the original story as well. The end was a tad too predictable.

I would have enjoyed it more if the author had used more of the actual dialogue from the original story.

Seriously.....Twilight much? I couldn't BELIEVE how closely this book mirrored the Twilight story and STILL got away with it! It's basically the same story with a couple of logistic changes, and unfortunately no iambic pentameter! This appears to be just an attempt to capitalize on recent trends---vampires and, well..vampires! Not worth it, not tremendously well written...not for me!

I almost didn't finish this book. I didn't realize at the time it was young adult fiction, but still the writing was flat, the character development was superficial and it seems with the basic story having been written for the author, she could have cone up with something that had more depth and emotion. The original Romeo and Juliet is considered among the greatest tragedies of our time and this book does nothing to add to that. I did think the idea was creative and the ending was well done, bu...more
