It was a strong opening entry that left me underwhelmed. Moon Dance (Vampire for Hire #1) was overall an okay story. I liked the fact the protagonist is a woman dealing with her condition. But to me, the character is too emotionally tied to her human life to be an effective creature of the paranormal world.

I was totally into the story but three things happen: she couldn’t see her reflection; she changed into a giant half woman-bat; and if someone didn’t suspect her “condition” she was telling th...more

This is a very nice story. I love vampire & werewolves so this book is perfect for me since it has both. Except for one typo that repeated itself throughout the entire book (save where except should be)the writing was good.

Samantha Moon (love the name) is a former FBI/Homeland Security agent turned vampire turned PI. She has a husband & 2 children. Sam struggles to maintain her family, her marriage, & her sanity. Sam was attacked & turned into a vampire 6 years ago, since then sh...more

Moon Dance, delightful story/mystery of a mother/FBI (albeit HUD) agent, turned private detective out of necessity. The reason...she is vampire. Has been for 6 years and is still adjusting. She is good at being a private detective and is trying hard at being a good mother and wife. She has 2 children, the oldest is 9. She loves her children. Her hubby is ....well, lets just say he is not happy any longer. J.R.Rain weaves a wonderful story of Samantha's daily life and detective skills as well as...more

I liked “Moon Dance” I must say that I had small hopes for it, something about the cover screams cheesy, but of course there’s a saying that has something to do with judging covers. Anyway, I will start off with the one thing I was disappointed in, the length. It wasn’t short but it wasn’t as long as I expected. I read the Kindle edition and the story stopped at 76% completed, the rest was excerpts from other books. I was hoping there would be more, but I’ll have to pick the next book up for tha...more

Samantha Moon.

I got this cheap for my Kindle with no expectations.
After it sat on it for some months - I finally opened it to read the first 20 pages before (as I planned) deleting it.

Wow! Was I taken surprise - this is a GREAT start to a series. Fab, well-rounded main character, interesting world, actual plot, beginning, middle and end - all gripping.
2 and a half hours later and one long bath I was buying the second in the series and suggesting to my OH that we have takeaway for dinner as I planned to read.

I enjoyed this spin on Vampire Detective work. Samantha was bitten 6 years ago and in some ways lives a shadow of a life. Her husband is less than a man in my eyes. Instead of helping her he is grossed out by what she is. I like how it’s like reading a Spencer novel or any other detective book plus paranormal. And how Samantha is able to bounce ideas off her internet friend Fang. Definitely a great start to a series. I enjoyed reading how Samantha interacts with her client and develops a love in...more

I can't decide between 2 or 3 stars, so I am compromising with 2-1/2. If you are interested in reading this book, do yourself a favor and avoid the audiobook version and read it in print instead. I started this book on audio and made it about halfway through before deciding maybe I would like it better if I read it (I also had a copy on my kindle). I know the book got so many good reviews, but I just wasn't "feeling it". Maybe if I had never started listening to it and had just read it I would h...more

Samantha Moon is a loving mother, private investigator and did I mention a vampire? Samantha Moon works at home as a private investigator. She takes on a case with a man who seems quite intriguing and may have a secret just like hers. Samantha’s personal life is also going to pieces and she tries her best to keep her family together but being a vampire just might cost her the happy life she was once used to. This is the first book in the Vampire for Hire Series and I love the story. I love Saman...more

Vampire fiction can either be a hit or a miss. I can't think of one vampire book that I have read that was in the middle except maybe Dracula...but that's different.

In the case of this book and this series, I think the vampire story is entirely fresh and original--a hit.

The series is less about the mother who was turned vampire 6 years prior and is now trying to make it work with her life, than it is about a woman who is struggling to keep her family together, be a successful private investigato...more

I just finished reading the first book in this series and is was so much fun to read.

An FBI agent turns Private Eye after she is bitten by a vampire and turned. She is married with 2 young children. Danny, her husband is a practicing lawyer and was so supportive when it first happened. Then things changed after the reality of it set in. She knows he is having an affair but is still heart broken when he forces her to leave her 2 children and home. Danny has a file that he gave his associate to ho...more

Not everyone know's the last though, just her sister mary lou and husband Danny.
Since that night six years ago she's learned to cope with her condition and carry on for the sake of her kids. Things haven't been perfect but what is?

Yet again though Danny's having another 'late night at the office' after being increasingly distant because of Samantha's condition. Determined not to rock the boat she carries on as normal and takes a job.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was a freebie that actually sounded interesting so I picked it up. But, once I started reading it I had to finish it as quickly as possible. It's a fast read. The story is a modern take on vampires that are "real people", meaning they do laundry, carpool and watch Judge Judy. Apparently they also have marriage problems, squabbling kids and irrational cravings for Ding Dong's.

As I said, overall I enjoyed the book. There are a few things that have annoyed me (and in...more

I thought his was a unique take on the vampire craze, and I really enjoyed it for that reason. Of course, the fact that it was very well written didn't hurt any! Samantha Moon was a normal, everyday soccer mom, but that all changed one night when she was attacked. Now she could no longer go out during the day - those UV rays are murder on vampires, you know. So she told her friends she contracted a rare skin disease that made her have to avoid sun, and they all seemed to believe that story. Stil...more

Moon Dance is the first book in the Vampire for Hire series. It is about Samantha Moon who has taken multitasking to a whole new level. She is a mother of two, a private investigator and after becoming a late night smack for a hungry vampire, a vampire. She has to balance taking care of her kids, which is really hard when you are allergic to sunlight, running a P.I. business from home and dealing with being newly divorced.

When she is hired by Kingsley Falcrum to find out who had attempted to mu...more

The storytelling was intriguing and appealing and kept my interest but it also felt a little rushed. Perhaps that has something to do with the overall length of the story (not quite a book not quite a novella) but I wish more time had been spent on the characters and development.

The technical aspect of the book is what kept me from rating this any higher.

There was a lot of telling v showing, there were some continuity errors (Wendy's wrapper vs Burger King wrapper) and there was quite a lot...more

C2011: This sounds condescending but this book shows a great deal of promise. A long way to go to match Briggs and/or Harrison but I can see this developing into a good series. For me, this is a slightly different take on the urban fantasy view of vampires and I was really cross with the husband but could understand. However, the love interest part of the plot rang a little untrue perhaps it was too instantaneous for my liking and I didn’t much care for the female characters continually noting t...more

For the past few days I have been on a reading frenzy. Most of the books have just been okay. However, while searching Amazon.com's Kindle store, I stumbled upon 4 books of the Vampire for Hire series for $2.99. After reading the summaries for the books and the various reviews, I decided to give the series a try. Boy, I am so glad I did.

J.R. Rain is wonderful at characterizations and action scenes. In "Moon Dance" we are introduced to Samantha Moon a wife and mother who was attacked and turned i...more

Samantha Moon was bitten by a vampire six years ago, and as a result had to quit her job and become a private investigator. She's hired by Kingsley Fulcrum to find out who shot him. Clearly he's keeping secrets of his own, since he survived 5 shots to the head.

I got this for free on my Kindle, and I enjoyed it. I didn't love it, but I liked it. Samantha's husband was initially supportive of her, but as time went by, he began to pull away. He said that she repulses him now, with her cold skin an...more

When I first got my Kindle, I picked up a lot of new vampire stories to read. This is one of those stories - a new author whom I've never read before.

The verdict?

Overall, I'm glad that I tried out "Moon Dance". I love the premise behind the story - Samantha Moon, a regular wife and mother, got attacked six years ago, turning her into a vampire. The story begins at a time of change - Sam suspects her husband is cheating on her, the regular grind of suburban life is getting to her, and a new, hunk...more

Does anyone else get that weirdly happy, tingly feeling when you're a few chapters into a book by an author new to you, and you realize "Damn, this is REALLY GOOD!" and he's got MORE!! Well, that's what happened to me yesterday, as I was reading Moon Dance by J.R. Rain. I was enjoying it so much I didn't want to leave the story. It doesn't get much better for us bookworms. Contented sigh here..................ok, on to the review.

Samantha is a married woman with two small children. However, she is not your typical mom. Six years ago she was attacked by a Vampire and left for dead. Her husband Danny and her sister are the only ones who know the truth. Lately, her husband has been acting strange towards her. When she was attacked, he helped her come up with an excuse to avoid daylight. The rest of the world thinks she has xeroderma pigmentosum.
She had to leave her day job as a federal agent. She started her own PI agency w...more

Thanks Lindsey for lending this one! I'll be honest, after reading the reviews I didn't think that I would like Moon Dance. It wasn't amazing, but it was good. Unlike most books in this genre Samantha is an adult, a wife, and a mom. So what happens when she gets herself turned into a vamp? She does what all of us moms do, she does what has to be done. Wearing a large hat, and slathering herself up with sunscreen she dashes to the car in the afternoon to pick up the kids. She has to quit her job...more

Moon Dance is the first book in the Vampire for Hire series by J.R. Rain, another new author for me. I love checking out new authors when their work becomes available to me, especially if they get fairly decent reviews from readers. This one only costs me .99cents on Amazon.com.

Our main character is Samantha Moon. Sam is 37 years old, but doesn’t look a day over 25. She is the mother of two children; Tammy and Anthony. She is married to Danny, but for a while now, Danny has turned cold toward h...more

Samantha Moon is your typical all-American mom. She is worried about her children, constantly taking them to functions and practice and parent-teacher conferences. She cooks, she ends fights, and tries to balance family and work.
Oh, and she's a vampire. Six years before the story takes place, Samantha was attacked and turned into a vampire. She struggles to be what her family needs while avoiding the sun as much as possible. She has taken up nighttime jogging, boxing, and has traded food for ani...more

NOT urban fantasy. BARELY paranormal fiction. Seriously, if you are looking for a good urban fantasy book, then keep looking. This is more of a detective story narrated film noir-style by the unlikeliest of vampire soccer moms. (Oh yes, she's a vampire, but there's no mystery to it. It happened six years ago. And her sister asks many questions about being a vampire, so all that exposition is "hidden" in dialogue.) I really thought I was reading one of those self-published, never-professionally-e...more

Brilliant and Engaging! A Must Read!

Moon Dance by J.R. Rain is a brilliant urban fantasy novel with engaging characters, witty dialogue, a page-turning plot, and clever subplots that unfurl like a well-paced movie in your mind.

The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a smart and beautiful private investigator who hasn't aged a day in six years. She can kick butt in a street fight or in a boxing ring. An ex-federal agent for HUD, Sam is also a vampire who likes her steak rare, and, is married and the...more
