It was more like a collection of stories than a novel. Also, the main character suddenly developed super crime solving powers after winning the lottery, a bit far fetched. It would have been much easier to read if it flowed better, it just jumped from one story to the next.

Picked this one to read on our trip to Florida because I like to read MHC on airplanes, and I didn't realize it was a collection of short stories. Turns out, a collection of short stories was JUST what I needed! Got a little tired of having to re-introduce the characters at the beginning of each story (understandable for a book, which might be the first thing someone has chosen to read - - - but a collection of short stories all about the same characters?), but the mysteries themselves were cl

You can't go wrong with this collection of short stories featuring millionaire lottery winners Willy and Alvirah Meehan. These are short, sweet tales where Alvirah solves crimes based upon instinct, common sense, and by listening to tapes of conversations made by using the special brooch pinned to her lapel. If you want a light, easy read with stories similar to what used to be carried in "Good Housekeeping" magazine, then check this out. It's not rocket science, but you'll be pleasant

It was an entertaining book but I was annoyed by the fact that since winning the lottery Alvirah was so worried about her precious image and fitting in with rich people etc. It seemed a bit unlike her character since she has such a kind heart. And taking out everything that had to do with that and the Cypress Point Spa (for the rich and famous) would not have hurt the stories.
It was a collection of mystery/crime stories that Alvirah ends up solving. It's an easy quick and light

I enjoyed this book very much. It was different from the books I ussually read so it was a nice change. In the book are six different mysteries that all happen to two characters known as Alvirah and Willy Meehan. They win the lottery and use that money to dream big and do the things they always wanted to but never could afford, including Alvirah becoming a detective. Sure enough she picked a good job because trouble certainly seemed to start following her...

I have read the first book with these characters and really liked it, but I felt that these short stories fell flat. Easy to solve, mostly boring mysteries. The main character is a quirky older woman who used to be a cleaning lady and after winning the lottery now solves crimes that fall into her lap. I am not sure why, but she really annoyed me, and I just kept wishing one of the criminals would go ahead and kill her already.

I have always maintained that this author knew my parents---there are too many coincidences in the Lottery winner stories that parallel the lives of Bill & Hedy Meehan. from the apartment in Flushing Queens all the way through his sisters the nuns in the convent, to the determination of "Alvirah's" lottery playing, just too many co-in-iny-dinks!

I'm not a big fan of short stories, thus the 2 star rating. I do, however, really enjoy Mary Higgins Clark. The opening paragraphs of each story repeat the same basic info of Alvariah and her husband's rise to wealth through winning the lottery. This was a fun, simple book of short stories good for relaxing reading.

I got this book for free at my work when a fellow co-worker left a pile of books in the main bathroom/locker area. I was not expecting it to be a compliation of short stories but I am truly enjoying being able to read it during my breaks at work. I have always loved Mary Higgins Clark and am looking forward to adding another one of her books to my list.

I'm such a sucker for Mary Higgins Clark! Her books are so entertaining. This was actually a group of different stories using the same characters. It was a little annoying, because the plots never deeply developed However, it didn't really matter, because all of Clark's books are quick reads.

A perfect book for the plane! It's a collection of short stories about a likable couple who won the lottery and go around solving mysteries. You can pick it up and put it down without forgetting important details and all the plots wrap up quickly and nicely. An pleasant, easy read.

I shall be fond of Mary Higgins Clark, especially this title, since it's one of the few that reminds me of a particular growing-up time. At least reading her gave me a scare that made me feel more grown up. And an aside: My grandmother and I would trade her books back and forth.

A collection of short stories about Alvirah and her husband, Willy. They are likable characters, and this discusses their lives after winning the lottery. Each story features a different mystery for Alvirah to solve. They are quick, easy reads.

Six short stories/mysteries featureing Alvirah and Willy Meehan -- former cleaning woman and plumber who won it big in the lottery. They've come up in the world and also have a lot of adventures thanks to Alvirah's sleuthing. Good book.

I enjoyed these six short stores about two of my favorite characters, Alvirah and Willy. Once again Alvirah and her starburst pin with the secret recorder to the rescue. Naturally, the plots weren't as in depth as a full lenght novel, but they were a delightful, fast read.

Loved it - still love the new ones as they come out! Light reading and interesting - great escape reading I guess you could call it - however her latest one with Alvirah was pretty intense...

I love Alvirah! This is the first Mary Higgins Clark book I read and I was hooked immediately! Alvirah is such a believable character, I think I know her and I want to be her when I grow up.

I'd rather give this 1.5 stars. Maybe I just haven't read a Mary Higgins Clark book in awhile - but this writing sounds like that of a semi-talented freshman in high school! Predictable, cliche, immature writing. Disappointed overall compared to what I was expecting from this author.

I read this book so quickly it was so good I loved it. Origianally suspenseful and thrilling it was a normal Mary Higgins book with all the great twists and turns!

I usually love Mary Higgins Clark books but this one was not one of my favorites.
It was definately an easy read with the short stories in it.

The remaining short stories about Willy & Alvirah (I listened to the first half of them earlier this week). These were better to read than listen to, but still not as good as her full length books.

Alvirah and Willy are so likable. I enjoyed these stories. They were suspenseful and just the right length.

A very funny book. I love the characters in this book and I am glad that she has had them in other books.

Alvirah so far seems a little out there, and she really annoys me with all of her kinks, especially her recorder. "Despite the late bedtime, Alvirah and Willy were up.....back into our place." p 18 Here Alvirah annoys me with her fake leadership and enthusiasm. Hopefully a suspect kills her soon.

I listened to this on tape, it was fun, I enjoyed the charachters most of all. Fun short stories.

Fun to read a collection of mini stores about a woman who plays detective.

A fun little book of short stories but not up to her usual gripping tales.
