Ok, I admit that this book probably doesn't deserve five stars by most peoples standards, but I picked it up on a whim when I was out at the lake in the summer of 1978, before I had even seen the movie or T.V. series, and I utterly and completely enjoyed it. I've reread it many times, and wore out my first copy. I actually enjoy how some parts of the story differ quite abit from the TV show. If you've never read it and enjoy either version of Galactica, I'd recommend giving this novelization a t...more
Since I've gotten all captivated by the shiny new Battlestar Galactica remake on the Skiffy Channel, I got the urge to re-read LJ user solarbird's old copy of the first novelization that got released with the original series, ages and ages ago. I did it for nostalgia, and also out of a sense of curiosity about the various differences between the culture depicted in the old series vs. the one depicted in the new.

Battlestar Galactica by Glen Larson and Robert Thurston is the first book in the Battlestar Galactica series. The book is a novelization of the events that start out the TV show even if I do not know whether the story is the same as I never watched any of the TV show. I can also see many similarities between the storyline in the book and that of certain areas of the book of Mormon but in this area as well I can not make many accurate comparisons because I have not read that book. With those two...more
I found this in my bookshelf while searching for something to read while on the road. I figured reading some science fiction will be a good change and inspire me to read the Dune and Ender's Game series. So far I don't feel the urge yet but I'm getting the hang of reading sci fi again.
I've heard about Battlestar Galactica through a friend of mine, then I saw a trailer for the series on TV a couple of years ago. I got intrigued because all I see on TV when its about sci fi are Star Wars and Star...more

This original novel that inspired the television series of the same name and later the more modernized depiction and its spin off series Caprica, depicts a very interesting future for mankind. Having expanded out into the universe humanity has taken up residence on twelve planets, interestingly named after the signs of the zodiac. There they encounter a race of systematic and orderly aliens, called Cylons, who believe themselves to be guardians of the universe. They decide humans are a blight an...more
I wanted to give this book only 1 star, but I'm trying hard to keep things in perspective. This is just a novelization, and should be judged on those merits.
So it's not great science fiction. So it's not great writing. So there's multiple plot holes. So the characters are either one-dimensional (Uri) or useless (most of the women). So the conflict is very simplistic - good vs evil (no ethical dilemmas here).

Being a major fan of space opera even at an early age, I had a tendency to devour anything I could get my hands on. Novelizations of movies and television series were one of the staples as I was growing up. For those who enjoy a novelization that expands on the story and fills in a lot of detail, then this is one for you. This version of BSG covers the original "movie" (which was only shown on TV in the USA) and basically acted as a pilot for the eventual series. Once the series was made this ve...more
When the book came out after the movie, I asked my Dad to buy it for me. It was written in Spanish and the sexy scenes were blurred on purpose.
This is the first book I ever recall reading as my own interest.
I think I was really into StarWars at the time, but this book was the first one I read on my own because I wanted.
I rate it high because a book that gets you to read, especially at a young age, is a book that has earned its credit. It doesn't matter which book it is.

Although it seems a lot of people love the new "reimagined" or reboot of "Battlestar Galactica" and while the new version has it's appeal, I personally like the original best. This novel seems to be based on the original's pilot episode/movie, but with a few changed, added to, or fleshed out scenes. I'd recommend getting the DVD season set instead, but if you're a major fan, you might want to check this book out, just to see the differences.
I remember really liking this book when it came out. Of course I was about 8 or 9 and the movie had just come out. No better or worse that the Star Wars movie that had come out...I liked them both just the same. And I had a Battlestar Galactica board game too...I loved that as well and remember playing it with my brother and Mom and Step-Dad...good times. I wish I still had my original copy but I read it till it fell apart.
I got this because I found it somewhere for a quarter and thought it might be fun. The book is a word-for-word recap of the first three episodes of the original tv show, only with the entertainingly 1970s-looking special effects replaced by terrible writing. If you're interested, you can save yourself a lot of time and effort by just finding the show online (http://www.hulu.com/battlestar-galact...) and watch the first three episodes.

It took me a whole month to read this book. Youch. Med school is really kicking in with no free time thing at the moment.
But back to the book, from what I recall it really was great. What I enjoyed the most was the classic science fiction cornerstone that this novel represents. I wasn't reading it for the story or adventure so much as I was for the inevitable knowledge that this would bring to my future scifi books.
That said, it didn't disappoint. It did bore me a bit at times, and the dialogu...more

This book was exactly what I expected, Battlestar Galactica's original series television debut. There are small differences between the book and the show but this is definitely worth reading to any SciFi fan. For fans of the original series this is a trip down memory lane and a return to our youth.
