The thing with these books is that you probably should read them (not necessarily the Lonely Planet ones) before you go overseas, though they also become out dated pretty quickly, so it is also best to try to get the latest one available. They pretty much contain everything that you need to know about where you are planning on going, which includes the cost of catching a cab, the selected hotels that they recommend, and also a fair number of restaurants that you can try out. I lived in Hong Kong for two months and this book was my constant companion. It's no encyclopedia, and it's a heck of a lot of information to process, and it doesn't highlight the things that I would recommend necessarily. But. It's an excellent resource -- and everything locals recommended I did was mentioned in the book somewhere, but maybe not with a lot of emphasis.

Hong Kong is a really overwhelming place, and I'd say this book does a good a job as possible to pick out the best things to do
A very good and useful guide
Not suited for iPad.
Maps are low resolution, making them completely unusable.
A travel guide without maps.......
