Why is this book worth reading for?
1. Because it has a great design.
2. Because it was published as a innovative business model.
3. Because it can easily change your life.
If you don't believe me, read this review.
I wouldn't know exactly if there is a definition in a book, but Wikipedia says business model describes the rationale of how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value (economic, social, or other forms of value). From the experience in this book I would add that in the first...more

This book is absolutely wonderful in that Alexander clearly describes how you can create and use a model to represent a high level vision and purpose for an organization, the customers served, constraints, costs, and "revenue". He even has a chapter that discusses usage in the public sector.
Another thing Alexander does is discuss how using this as a large information radiation about an organization's purpose and vision and showing evolution of this dynamically can be very powerful in keeping peo...more

Business Model Generation is one of my first readings on economics. (In my defense, I have prior experience with modeling in general, and some experience with economic models in comp.sci. and the market of distributed computing systems.)
This book turned out to be a mixed blessing. On the positive side, it's an easy-to-grasp, well-structured, richly illustrated book on the concepts, patterns, and processes that underlie the generation and use of business models. I particularly enjoyed reading ab...more

“Business Model Generation” (Wiley) a new book by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur. More than a book, “BMG” is a project, nine years in the making and involving the contributions of some 470 members who set out to discover and expand upon a new formula for generating new businesses and retooling existing ones around a model of what works in todays seemingly topsy-turvy, customer centric business world.

The business model canvass is very popular in startup circles, however, after reading the book, a lot of people are doing it wrong or have admittedly repurposed the canvass to into how they do business.
I'm sure other ideas surrounding the development of a business model canvass, Ash Maurya has a completely different approach that works with his commitment to rapid MVP development and testing, are useful but they are very different than what's posited in this book. I highly recommend reading this...more

I loved this book. It took apart the components of a business down to the basics in a way that allows me to analyse businesses see scope for flexibility or re-design. The highly visual nature of the book also made it very easy to remember and internalize the concepts; concepts that will serve me for a long while.
Another unusual aspect of the book was the use of and citation recent articles by business gurus, articles in HBR and on business websites. This made it very current, the sources are of...more

A book on business model innovation and how important that is for businesses n today's economic and technological climate.
I was torn between giving this book 3 or 4 stars. On one hand, it's a visually beautiful book which introduces some thought-provoking and useful tools, like the Business Model Canvas. On the other hand, for most subsequent chapters I felt like I was reading the same thing over and over again, with slight changes in the details. In the end, it was usefu...more

The subtitle of this book says "A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers". I'm sorry but I have to completely disagree. This is "A Handbook by Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers" and, in my opinion, "A Handbook for your boring conservative boss, the neighbourhood bakery selling the same old loafs of bread in the same shop for 30 years, the mayor of your incredibly dull town and for your parents".

This book sometimes suffers a bit from style over substance. Although a nice change from regular business books, the graphic design comes across as too eager to look trendy, and many of the illustrations aren't as illuminating as they first seem. Also, the tone of voice occasionally annoyed me with its love for buzzwords. Finally, in all honesty, it gets a bit boring and too shallow towards the end. However, the book did provide me with a useful framework for thinking about my own business and t...more

Absolutely awesome!! This concept by Osterwalder and gang is brilliant, insightful and visionary in comprehensiveness and simplicity - how to look at ANY business - not just startups, public corps, large financial houses - not just money making behemoths, but social service providers. A plethora of examples that follow describing standard archetypal business models also cover a lot of ground. The book, however, is best utilized with practical demos - its a fun and engaging exercise to help clien...more

An excellent practical book to assess your business ideas.
This book feel like a course in business assessment. Its presentation with lots of visuals that support the ideas makes it easy to apprehend.
This is the best attempt I've seen at mathematically or rationally analyzing business ideas along 5 main filters or views: Canvas, Patterns, Design, Strategy and process.

There are many books in the marketplace to help people in business. They range from help to start a business, through to making sure the most is got out of any organisation. These books tend to have a formality about them that makes the reader take them seriously; after all business is serious enough for people to hang their futures on and depend on them for a livelihood.
Business Model Generation by Alex Osterwalder does not have this air of formality about it, as it is written very much in the...more
The cartoonish packaging and presentation of this book shouldn't dissuade prospective readers, there actually is some meat. BMG's slug ambitiously reads, "You're holding a handbook for visionaries, game changers and challengers striving to defy outmoded business models and design tomorrow's enterprises..." While this is a little of a breathless oversell, BMG contains good tools to work with.

I recently completed the design thinking course at Stanford and was compelled to read this after seeing the author there. It's a summary of the design thinking decision process in relation to all business models.
An intuitive and inspiring examination which is easily actionable after a single read.

Reduces business to four essential components namely; offer, infrastructure, financial viability and customer interface. These components are spread out on a big picture visual canvas called "The business model canvas" which enables us to see crucial connections and relationships within the business. This book also incorporates classic strategic management tools like PEST analysis and SWOT analysis to further enhance the value of this book. This has to be the best business book I have come acros...more

Excellent book and tool for all levels in an organization to map and understand their business model. This is applicable to all organizations, whether for-profit or non-profit.
Best quotes, "the past indicates little about what is possible in terms of future business models" (p. 136) and "business model innovation is about challenging orthodoxies to design original models that meet unsatisfied, new, or hidden customer needs" (p.136).

Nothing new here-- the nine areas of the business model canvas are pretty straightforward and are part of any good planning process or new venture idea--but I like the simplicity and usefulness of the approach. Laying it all out on a virtual (or physical) canvas and then testing your business hypotheses around each area and making adjustments as you learn is cool--an adjustable shell game vs. the old, static business plan tome.
A very interesting concept to explore a business problem from many angles. The methodology described in the book can be user to evaluate and iterate on opportunities. We used the method in product innovation workshops when we had ideas that were going beyond the scope of just a single feature or new product. The methodology described in the book can help you explore and capture many different angles of a product idea.
The book is an easy read with visual content that makes it easier to understand and recall later.
I think one of the most important things this book gives us is a constructive way to conxentrate on 9 building blocks of BM and a common language to discuss it. Sharing the business model canvas with your employees makes it easier to show the bigger image and explain what an important role they are playing in the success of the company.

I love this book and still use it all the time. It's well thought-out and packed with great tools and resources to make it part of your toolkit as a designer.
It frames the business model as a creative problem to solve and give you visual tools to help you conceptualize and iterate on business ideas in a concise contemporary way. I recommend it highly this book.

This is a must read for any entrepreneur. Very well structured material that is combined with real world case studies, easy to process material that invites you to apply it to your own business ideas.
After reading the first chapter about the Business Model Canvas, started using it for brainstorming the model for our startup idea.

A beautifully designed and illustrated book with some great decomposition of business models for those not familiar with them. The only reason I give it three stars is because a lot of the design techniques were ones with which I was already familiar. For me, these digressions disrupted the pacing of the book, but your mileage may vary.
I put currently reading because I revisit this book so often. This organizational handbook should be a requirement for anyone wanting to enter the change management field. Full of case studies and insightful commentary, this book never gets dusty on my shelf - in fact, I keep it at work now in order to reference.

The first half contains an excellent overview of various business models, whereas the second half chiefly explains the process of creating a business model for your business. I found the first half so much more valuable than the second, but it too was worth skimming through.
On a side note, this book is visually stunning and extremely well designed.
