The Story Of Valentine's Day (A Crowell Holiday Book)

3.59  ·  Rating Details ·  39 Ratings  ·  9 Reviews
Red rose, lacy valentines, and choclates in shiny foil. Everybody loves Valentines Day! People have been celebrating Valentine's Day for thousands of years, but it wasn't always about glitter and glue and cupcakes and candy. Some say that the holiday in fact was originally a day of remembrance to honor a priest who, long ago, sacrificed his won life to marry young couples.

Valentine's Day, generally understood as a celebration of romantic love, is a cultural phenomenon in the West. Sweethearts exchange cards, candies and gifts, and children in classrooms everywhere also participate in the tradition, inviting one another to "be my valentine," with pre-printed or handmade cards and candies, often competing to see who will receive the most valentines. But most people have no idea how the holiday came to be.

Not every child will like this book. It is like a Valentine's Day picture book for the history buff. Our older son loves history, so this was a great, informative book about stories and people behind Valentine's Day traditions. Very fetchingly illustrated by Susan Estelle Kwas.

Interesting facts but very little pics. Clare must have been in the young adult book section! But I enjoyed it...

old fashioned pen and ink drawings with green shadowing. Wish they would update and illustrate in a more recent style.

Short but good explanation of the origins of St. Valentine's Day going back to it's pagan roots, not just to the Catholic inception.

Born to be a Writer
Almost as far back as he can remember, Clyde Robert Bulla wanted to write. Born on a farm in a small town in Missouri, Mr. Bulla's first school was a one-room country schoolhouse. One day his teacher asked each first grade student what he or she would do with a thousand dollars. Young Clyde answered that he would buy a table. His classmates laughed heartily, and his teacher was
