On three or four occasions in his career as a psychoanalytic theoretician, Freud changed his mind on fundatmental issues. Setting forth in rich detail Freud's new theory of anxiety, Inhibitions, Symptoms and Anxiety (1926) is evidence for one of them. In rethinking his earlier work on the subject, Freud saw several types of anxiety at work in the mind and here argues that...more

This short book is far more interesting than its title might suggest.

I'm going to be looking at some of the more famous books about anxiety in the coming months. I started with this one and I immediately didn't think I was going to get much out of it, but damn it was just godawful. The problem with this is the same problem I and most people have had with Freud since virtually his entrance into psychological studies. He tries over and over again to explain everything with half baked ideas and mythology that just don't fit as bluntly as he would like. His psychoana...more

All manifestations of anxiety are (in essence) a resurgence of this primal fear. Thi...more
