Stillness Speaks
In Stillness Speaks, Eckhart Tolle illuminates the fundamental elements of his teaching, addressing the needs of the modern seeker by drawing from all spiritual traditions. At the core of the book is what the author calls the state of presence, a living in the now that is both intensely inspirational and practical. When the pressures of future and past thinking disappear,...more

This is an amazing meditation on the art of presence. I have to admit to reading and listening to it at least 3 or 4 times (probably more, I've lost count). Tolle is highly respected by this reader because he has changed my perspective in fundamental ways. I do not want to give the impression that I have living in the moment mastered, but I have found Tolle to be an excellent teacher showing me the portals one use to attain being in the present. He helps me see and find ways of practicing the ar...more

This is one of those books that if you rate poorly, droves of fans collectively roll their eyes and proclaim that you have missed the point. I feel almost lame giving this one two stars but the format just doesn't work for me, and yes, I read the first few pages, I get this this is a narrow little work that encourages stillness not reading and digesting. But this got me thinking about Derrida who wrote about the use of words and imperfect symbols and how very irritated I become in general with w...more
Stillness Speaks by Eckhart Tolle breaks tradition from his other two best sellers. Instead this text is short and better applied for reference and inspiration purposes. It is perfect for a quick injection on the following topics - silence & stillness, beyond the thinking mind, the egoic self, the now, who you truly are, acceptance & surrender, nature, relationships, death & the eternal and suffering & the end of suffering.

I found this book to be worth reading and thinking about. At the very least it will make you aware of some of the mistaken ways we view ourselves and our relationships.
Initially I found it pretty hard to keep reading. I'm a skeptical guy and some of the teachings in this book sounded unnecessarily cryptic and silly. I kept at it though and in the second half of the book I've started to pick up some really interesting ideas. By the end of it I found it interesting enough to go through it again.

Tolle is one of the few "self-help" authors out there who gets that you can't help yourself: that you are already perfect and just have to get out of your own way. One does this by becoming still, and this book can help you learn how. It consists of a series of "shrutis;" short quotes that can bypass the discursive mind and speak to your true self.

I listened to the audiobook, a chapter at a time, to let it sink in. Tolle has truly influenced how I'm approaching my daily life, taking time to embrace moments of stillness. He asks thought-provoking questions of self-exploration, which lead to opportunities for reflection and changing thought patterns. In a couple short weeks, I've begun to identify when I'm making a situation into a sad story that I tell myself and others to soothe my ego, and I'm working on letting go of those stories. Grea...more
I love this audio book for short listenings in the car. It loses nothing by listening to short excerpts. In fact, that is exactly what Eckhart advises the reader to do. Read a little, put it down and pick it up again later. Practicing being present while driving has made me a much more relaxed and responsive driver. I can accept the traffic jams, drive defensively and calmly, and enjoy the beauty of nature all around that I might have otherwise missed had I been trapped in thought and emotions i...more
Tolle's earlier books, "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth", really resonated with me. They helped stay free of alcohol for over a year and half and inspired me to write my own self-help book for alcoholics, "Overcome Any Personal Obstacle, Including Alcoholism, By Understanding Your Ego". My book is available at http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/leewriter.

My mamma would be ashamed of me but I will say it nevertheless: I am done with spirituality.
At 19 years 8 months, it seems incredible that I have tasted spirituality, found bliss in it and now, well,...it doesn't appeal to me any more.
Blame it on Ayn Rand and her Objectivism that I have taken keen fascination to.
I bought this book for my mother and decided to read it before I passed it on to her. A book review in flipkart termed it to be one of the best in the genre and even went on to pronounc...more

Entire world is extremely busy in pursuit of living. But they are forgetting to live.
To be happay is "BE" Stilness can not External and it can not be forced.
At times when we meet great people or the lap of mother nature it just happens.
Allow it to happen.
Now it has to be deepened just by reliving the same like rewinding CD/DVD etc.
But I wounder why we have to speak ?
Communication is needed when there TWO .
You dont need others When YOU ARE STILL.

Stillness Speaks is like a Cliff's Notes version of Tolle's earlier book, The Power of Now. If you haven't read The Power of Now, then you will likely enjoy Stillness Speaks. Its spare lines will probably seem deep, since the depth of Tolle's understanding clearly is profound.
Having read The Power of Now, however, Stillness Speaks reads like little more than a key-word outline. There is little new material here. My advice -- go to The Power of Now, go directly to The Power of Now, do not pass "G...more

I found this book to be worth reading and thinking about. It will make you aware of some of the mistaken ways we view ourselves and our relationships. Every human being has been conditioned to think and behave in certain ways - conditioned genetically by our childhood experiences and our cultural environment.

Again, did the audiobook. Not bad; not great. I guess after Power of Now it was hard to impress me. His insights, voice, and suggestions are helpful though. I think I just wasn't in the mood and didn't find it as useful as Power of Now. It is not, however, a waste of time. If you like to meditate and reflect but haven't found much success with it, then I suggest this as a means to help.
No words. Tolle reminds me of Krishnamurti. It's a small book and very short. But the gems within get you to slow it all down and ease right into the moment you're in. Anyone looking to find ways to grab on to life and enjoy it more intensely and contemplatively, Eckhart Tolle may be the one for you.

Stillness Speaks is written as individual entries that are organized into 10 topic groups (makes for quick and easy reading). The book as a whole focuses on the state of presence and living in the now. It is a book that you can read many times and get something different out of it each time. The topic groups are helpful if you just want to focus on a certain area.
Everyone should read this book. I wish I had money to buy it. But, it is from the library. This book jumped off the shelf and it was meant for me to read this bad boy! So just read a sentence and set the book down and then pick it up again. It has some very wise words to ponder in your life. I need to read this book about 40 more times and I would enjoy it every time.
This book is less theoretical than Tolle's other books and more practical. His chapters are short but he covers many different topics. I found the wisdom in this book to be very authentic, as I have in Tolle's other works. If you enjoy books about spirituality, this is one to add to your repertoire!
This is one of those books that has soooo much good information for such a small book that you have to take your time reading it to really grasp everything that is said. I spent a few weeks just reading a few pages because I really wanted to absorb the info. Really helpful info. I will read this one again!

I listened to this book on CD and thought the author read the book very well. I appreciated his silences as well as his spoken words. I especially liked the thoughts about facing death. I also appreciated the idea that birth and death are related rather than life and death being opposites.

More a series of thoughts and comments than a narrative and I think that works really well for the stillness and presence in the now that he is promoting. It also fits in nicely with ideas that have come up in other books I've been reading

“Throughout history humans have inflicted countless violent, cruel, and hurtful acts on each other, and continue to do so. Are they all to be condemned; are they all guilty? Or are those acts simply expressions of unconsciousness, an evolutionary stage that we are now growing out of?
