In this unique ground breaking and enlightening book, Nora Gedgaudas provides a sane departure from conventional thinking about nutrition as promoted in the media and by conventional diet pundits. You will at last come to truly understand the basic principles of how your body and brain function based on both fundamental human physiology and the ancient selective pressures...more

I can follow the concepts in this book having been an alternative health/lifestyle follower for most of my life. I agree with the excessive carb intake paradigm most American follow. My own family seems to be several generations of addicts to sugar/white flour and other refined carbs. I can see clearly a pattern of obesity and type II diabetes induced by diet and lack of exercise in many family members. I am motivated to buck this trend. So many of Gedgaudas recommendations are counter to what m...more

The paradigm shift, I think, is important. However, I did not care for the tone of the author. I felt that she occasionally drifted into a bot of "conspiracy theory". Also, I think she was trying to impress MD's, or something, she used so much scientific jargon. Honestly, a lot of it was over my head, and I skimmed a lot. But it is worth the skim; there is a lot of important information there, viewing the human being as a long-time, biologically evolved animal, which we are. Changing to the Pale...more

This book is organized in classic toilet reading style in chapters of 2-4 pages. As the style suggests, the information here is broad but superficial, and in fact contains =incorrect= summaries of more in-depth works.

For instance she gets "Your body's many cries for water" by Dr. Batmanghelidj dead wrong-- it's not drink lots of pure filtered water, it's add a wee bit of salt to the water you are drinking, especially 30 min before meals and upon awakening.

SO read this as an introduction only to...more

This book is chock full of history and science that points out all the errors in the modern food pyramid and the government sanctioned high carb, low fat lifestyle. If you want stable blood pressure, stable blood sugar, strength, and long term health read this book with an open mind and really examine the science behind what we should eat.

While there are some over-generalizations in this book, I found it to be substantially a good guide to modern nutrition. I have followed her diet recommendations for five weeks, as an experiment, and have lost nine pounds. I no longer feel hungry all of the time, and I am sleeping better. My normally clogged head is clear. So, I am grateful to her for her efforts. I have since joined the Weston A. Price Foundation, which she recommends and am eating grass-fed, grass-finished meat, organic veggie...more

This is a technical book about eating for optimal health. It isn't the greatest book ever and it isn't easy to read, but it might be the most important book I have read in terms of eating healthy.

This book contained everything I knew about nutrition, mental and physical health, evolution, and a lot more. This book is science based but is an easy read. I devoured this book in less than 2 days.

I have a few beefs with this book, though. I agree with her that insulin is basically key to everything. However, I can't agree with limiting calories or protein. I understand that it has shown that it will extend life, and perhaps I'm a pig - but I'd rather eat until I'm full than limit my food to...more

A lot of good information about the "paleo" way of life, and a bit more science than The Paleo Solution. The references and recommended reading at the end is a great resource. However, I did at times lament Gedgaudas' lack of organization and focus as a writer.

A top to bottom view of the different aspects of nutrition, what we do wrong and what it affects. Gets a bit preachy, but chock full of information and advice on steps to take. It's loaded with science and studies to back up its claims, but is still very readable for those lacking a science background. I do not possess the appropriate chemistry or biology background to make definitive statements about how right or wrong the author may or may not be.
Fred
A bit technical in places but overall very good.

This book is a compilation of all I have learned the past two years from the WAPF. It is easy to read, succinct, referenced.
