Maz Harwood has had enough of London life for a while so when her friend Emma suggests she takes over Otter House Vets for six month while Emma goes on holiday with her husband Ben, Maz jumps at the chance. Country life is nothing like City life and soon Maz finds herself not only knee-deep in sick animals but she also in the middle of a feud with the other vets in Talyton, Talyton Manor Vets. Maz also discovers that Otter House is in serious trouble and she feels she has to not only mend that b...more

I read this book hoping for a light-hearted fun chick-lot romance book. It wasn't exactly that. It was much more depressing than I was counting on, with the deaths of more than one living being.

Also, quite a bit of it to me was a bit unbelievable, notably the competition between the Otter House vet and the Fox-Gifford vet. I can't imagine one vet being so openly rude and hateful and just downright unprofessional to another vet and still being the most respected vet in town. But maybe I'm wrong....more

This was a very good read indeed! I love the authors wit. It made me cry more then once. It a wonderful story about really finding out who you are and where you belong. A bit of romance as well, which I always like. :) If you love animals you will also enjoy how the main character really feels for the animals the towns people bring to her. A vet that gives a kiss to the dogs/cats she sees. She is not accepted with open arms in this small country town. She is there for her best friend Emma she we...more

First things, two stars is very generous.

The story was trite: a girl gets jaded by her lover, runs off to a new locale, shenanigans occur, and she falls in love in the process. I didn't like any of the characters. Maz was annoying and pathetic. Emma took advantage of her friend. Izzy was a jerk masquerading as kind 'Johnny on the spot.' The townspeople were cliche. Ugh.

The story was spent too much time focusing on the vet aspects of the story that the story of the people never developed. There w...more

This book was typical of others I have read on the same topic. Girl has bad breakup in the city and moves to the country to deal with her issues. Throw in dogs lately and I will pick up your book in a second! This book was more of the same. Girl takes over her friends vet office while friend goes on vacation and hijinx ensue. There is competition with the other vet in town and then the girls vet has some money issues, which actually annoy me a lot! Like the girl doesn't have enough to worry abou...more

I really wanted to like this book more then I did. I thought it was a great concept and I couldn't wait to read it when I picked it up on a whim the other day. I'm not a bit fan of books that are all drama and have nothing really good in them. They tend to make me a bit anxious. Nothing seemed to go right in this book, even at the end when things were starting to wind down. It just kind of made me depressed seeing bad thing after bad thing happen to Maz and nothing really good ever happening. Ev...more

Bor-ing...except for the animals!
I wanted to like this book because 1) it was a new author for me and that's always a potentially good thing and 2) a book about a vet and animals -- I love animals! So I thought I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, it was boring. I finished it only because I usually always finish books that I start but I found myself skimming vs. actually reading the text. None of the characters were really ones you wanted to root for...except for some of the cats and dogs! Sadly,...more

I absolutely loved this book. Everything about it. I was thrilled when I learned it was apart of a series! Many people gave the story low ratings because of the fact that some animals passed away and were injured. That's life. If you're reading a book about a veterinarians office, don't expect everything to be a happy ending because that's not how life is. Anyway, I've always wanted to live out in the country and wanted to work with animals. This book kind of reminded me of myself. Really enjoye...more

As the saying goes 'Never judge a book by it's cover' - well in choosing to read this, I did just that. And I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't wowed either. It was competent and fun and brought back memories of reading 'All Creatures Great and Small' as a teen. Like ACGAS, each chapter seemed to bring about a different animal/owner adventure and introduced lots of small English country village characters, but unlike ACGAS, I don't remember James Herriot pining away over failed romances and the...more

Comfort fiction. Sometimes, I have to escape from what I spend most of my reading time on and comfort fiction is what I want. City Girl, Country Vet fills the bill in a lot of ways with just a few very minor quibbles.

I’m inordinately attached to stories about veterinarians in rural areas, usually preferring real vets’ tales about their own experiences (thank you, James Herriot!), but fiction is OK, too, and I imagine some of this story might be based on real life since Ms. Woodman started out as...more

Doch nachdem sie einige Patienten beh...more

I came across this book when I was in the library, I have to say I would not usually go out of my way to read a book about animals as they are not a great interest of mine but a month or so ago I read a book about lost dogs and thoroughly enjoyed it so I thought I would give this one a go.

Our main character in this book is Maz Harwood. She is a vet who up until recent events have worked as a vet in the city. Her partner who also is her boss decides he wants to make another go of a relationship...more

Trust Me, I'm a Vet is most definitely a novel of two parts. I say that because the vet aspects and the animal stories were handled beautifully and practically brought me to tears on some occasions, whereas the "chick lit" part of the novel - the contrived way of bringing Maz to Otter House Veterinary Clinic, the romance, the larger-than-life characters - were clunky and cliched.

I do think that Cathy Woodman has talent as a novelist, and I have no doubt that the other novels in this series will...more

This was a good reminder for me to not judge a book by its cover. Title right up my alley, photo of a girl in wellies and a cute pug in a rainjacket? Sign me up! UGH - I just could NOT get into this book. After about 75 pages, I gave up. Didn't care about the protagonist (already have forgotten her name) or the cliched love interest (the hot vet at the competing clinic!). Too many other good books to read . . . so I took this one back to the library.

Meh. Clearly the author was a vet bc that's where the writing shines. The other stuff, not so much. I never did get around lo liking Maz, and frankly found Emma somewhat annoying. I read it in one or two sittings and I wanted to like it since the concept always has so much potential (city girl moves to country and meets eccentric characters). This book seemed to have fewer eccentric characters and more mean, spiteful ones. It made for an anxious read.

Not amazing literature, but it was a fast and fun read. Occasionally I found the situations and side characters to be a little less than believable, but I've also never lived in a small town in England. I've only lived in large, American suburban/urban cities...maybe people really ARE that crazy in tiny English country towns, who am I to judge? :P

I enjoyed the characters and loved the vet bits (I am a prospective vet tech). The romance was predictable, but cute I suppose. Overall it was an enjoy...more

I enjoyed it as a unique read. It was a little depressing in places and a little predictable but overall I liked it. I liked the characters and enjoyed the vet side of things which I thought made it more interesting because I wanted a departure from the stock romantic fiction that I get so bored with. I liked the fact that the author was an actual vet before she became an author and it does read like a true story in places with obvious fictionalization thrown in for fun. I read this one quickly...more

City Girl, Country Vet turned out to be a better story than I had even hoped! I loved it! The writing was so wonderful, I was immediately drawn in. In fact I stayed up into the early morning hours just to finish it; I did not want to put it down!

Maz (I have to admit I love her name, it fits her!) is an English vet. Her friend Emma is also a vet, they went to school together. Now Emma needs Maz’s help to run her country practice while she and her husband go on a 6 month holiday. Maz, who is a cit...more

I never want to dislike a book or give a negative review, but this book was hands down the most boring book I have ever read in my life. I found the storyline to be very drab and uneventfull. I struggled to finish it, actually nodding off at times, and found myself pushing through expecting to stumble upon some big climax that would make the whole thing worthwhile; However, it was all in vain.

I really enjoyed this book. This is now the third book I have read in this series. Maz Harwood is the main character and she has agreed to be the locum for her best friend Emma at Otter House. Emma has gone travelling for six months with her husband. Maz soon understands that a country life is different to the city life (she has left London). Maz soon discovers that Otter House is in serious trouble. Not only with the money side of things, keeping customers happy but also there is another vets T...more

At the conclusion of the first chapter, I realized that this book was likely to be quite sappy, silly, and predictable... and yet I chose to keep reading. Sappy and silly, it was, and it certainly did not require any exertion of brain power. Predictable is perhaps an understatement. It was a very quick read, although I admit to glossing quickly over some parts due to an increasingly waning interest level. I am not likely to suggest this to anyone, but it entertained me enough for a few hours.

I loved this book. It was a tad predictable at times. I'm a sucker for the right amount of cringe-worthy moments. And this book had them. It was well written: not too precious but not too heavy on the life lessons. I felt like I could live in this world but it still took me to another place.

Ok - had a good premise but I found the character of Maz to be weak, and quite frankly wimpy. She needed to build a backbone and have some confidence in herself as she seemed more like a vet just out of vet school than someone who had worked in an established practice. Not the best and would not recommend.
Renee Wickham
it was really hard to get thru this book. I had to force myself to finish it. she tends to go on and on about backstory that's not relevant but in the present when you want more detail and story line she skips details and thoughts. it had a good concept just not well executed

It is Trust Me, I'm A Vet by Cathy Woodman. This modern day James Harriot is the young woman Maz Harwood from London who goes to the country town of Talyton St. George to fill in for school friend Emma who goes on a long term break from her small animal practice. What she does not tell Maz is that the practice is in trouble financially after warning her about a fierce rivalry with the Talyton Manor Vets owned by the Fox-Giffords. Will Maz be able to keep the practice afloat until Emma returns an...more

As a vet student I appreciated the factual details regarding medicine but the minimal plot development and easy to predict story line did not keep me captivated. A quick read if you're just looking to read a cute predictable romance.
Lori
I expected a chick-lit book and I got one with slightly more depth than normal chick-lit. I found the vet details interesting, due to my love of animals. The antagonists were predictable as was the romance. But, that's just what I was looking for and exactly what I expected. Very enjoyable quick read!

I wasn't sure about this when I started but it had good reviews. Maz is asked to cover a vet practice while Emma and her husband Ben go on vacation. The vet practice has financial troubles; there is a fire at one of the animal-lover's homes; and falling in love happens too.

Very good; a nice read; highly recommended.

I began my working life as a small-animal vet. Like turning the pages in a book, I was never quite sure what was going to happen at the surgery next. From the sausage dog who swallowed a sewing needle to the telly addict of a rabbit who lost an eye to infection, there was never a dull moment.

I have always loved to read, escaping into all kinds of novels during those long nights on call, but I didn...more
