Guilty
One cold November night when Kat Kominski was fifteen years old, she and some friends held up a convenience store. In the heat of the moment, one of the others shot and killed an off-duty cop moonlighting as a security guard. Kat and her pals fled the scene in a panic, and no one was caught.

Disasppointing , November 29, 2008
I was disappointed by this installment by Karen Robards. I read "Bait" and loved it and "Vanished" and thought it was okay. Kate seems very much like the main character that was in th book "Vanished", but perhaps a little less annoying. Married at 19, no family, has a child, no father around and manages to make it though law school while raising and infant with no family help at all. Also, it doesn't even seem that Kate has a...more

I don't read Karen Robards for anything deep or even anything particularly believable. Her suspense novels are fast-paced fluff that don't overload my brain too much when it's already full.
Even so, this was AWFUL! (Warning: Rant approaching!)
When Kate was 15, she had a hard life. She had spent half her life in the foster care system and her latest foster mom's boyfriend was looking at her in ways he shouldn't look at a 15-year-old girl. She has some rough friends, and sh...more

I liked this book. It held my interest from the beginning. I liked the characters: single Mom Kate, love interest" Tom, and Kate's little boy Ben. Kate is a determined, scrappy woman who went from foster child to lawyer. Kate's dilemma was interesting and thought provoking; what is the best way to deal with a situation from her teens - being in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people - and being called on it later in life, thinking it could ruin her. I thought Kate was...more
Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!
I put this book on hold and then started reading it expecting a romance novel. Turns out it's more of a suspense novel with some romance thrown in for good measure. And I REALLY shouldn't have started reading it in the evening because I could not stop reading it until it was done lest I have nightmares about the bad guys breaking into my house, etc. Stupid books with their stupid plots that keep you riveted until 3:30 a.m. Curses!

Finally! A somewhat comeback book for Robards, in my opinion. lately her books have been dull and insignificant, but when i read the syniposis for this, i was intrigued and decided to read it, although i'd sworn off reading her books. I din't expect to like it, but i did.
In the beginning there were some editorial mistakes that gnawed at me, and i hated the fact that there would long bouts of insight into the characters psyche mid-conversation, so when the other character answered I'd...more

When Kate White, a single mother and prosecutor for the DA's office, goes to court and becomes involved in a shooting and an attempted escape by a prisoner, her life changes. Threatened by an old associate, she is caught up in a terrifying situation and fears for her nine year old son. As she becomes involved with Tom Braga, a homicide detective, things become even more complicated. As usual, Karen Robards has presented us with a very good read.
I think I spent most of this book really frustrated with Kate for being so bull-headed. She really could have never hoped to beat her past without help and she had no reason not to come forward. Of course her little boy was a concern, but with the information she had on Mario, she could have made a deal. Also, the author kept talking about how Kate knew the people you cared about left, but Robards didn’t give sufficient backstory to make it sound legit, so it just made Kate seem like a whiner...more
If I had to read one more line about the main character taking a "deep and hopefully calming" breath, I was going to scream. This book was just so repetitive. It was also very difficult to get into - I almost put it down several times and only continued reading because I had already paid for it and hate to waste my money. The romantic scenes between the two main characters were decent, but really the only redeeming thing about this book.
I was looking for some good romantic suspense this week. None of my favorite authors have new books coming out for a while, so I start searching back lists. I thought I'd read all of Karen Robards, but I discovered a few more this week. GUILTY was one of them. Robards does a wonderful job of creating characters I really care about, characters whose stories I want to know. I loved this book!
I enjoyed the story. I liked the romance between Kate and Tom. The one thing you have to get over is how dumb Kate is throughout the story. As a prosecutor who had to go through a lot of school, she sure doesn't act like it. The mystery part really wasn't a mystery. It wasn't really explained and once you got near the end of the book, it felt as if the author just wanted to end the book already. The ending was too fast for me.
What I like least about her books is that the ending always seems so... rushed. It takes a long time to get to the denouement, and then, just like that, it's over. That's unsatisfying.
What I like best about her books is the way she builds the sexual tension between the main characters. I think the stories would be better if she explored the male POV a little more too.

Why would anyone who's witnessed a murder ever think of becoming an attorney? The story is good. She gets caught up in a shooting at the courthouse and runs into the shooter for the murder when she was a teenager. The cop that tries to save her and then is investigating is attracted to her, but he knows she's hiding something. I really like Karen Robards books.
This book was much better than I anticipated after reading some of the reviews! I can't say that I loved this book, but I did really enjoy it & liked it immensely. I'd really like to give it 3 1/2 stars but since I'm unable to do that, I'm going to give it 4. I liked it much better than some books I have given 3 stars. Kate was admirable, smart, tough, & a survivor. She created a life out of nothing for her & her son. I could completely identify (as any loving mother could) with the total all co...more
Hmm...I debated between 2 and 3 stars. I read it pretty quickly, so I guess that means it kept my attention. BUT...I'm not a big fan of this author. It's my second book by her and I'm not sure I'll read more of her work. As with the first book I read by Karen, the plot was far-fetched and the relationship between the two main characters never developed to my liking - it wasn't there one chapter...then it was there the next.
Why is it that so many writers have a good story to tell, but can't figure out an ending? This has a really good plot, believable characters, and then, at the end, all the loose ends are tied up in 2 easy pages. Need still another category for good story, stinky ending.
Robards is getting into the habit of overdescribing character action and description, making her novels a bit monotonous to read. I've read all of her books, but I miss her historical novels. The police/crime stories are getting a bit stale now.
When you think you left the past for good and when you turn the corner its right there ready to come back to you. Guilty is about how sometimes the past comes back when you least expect it and with it, it can ruin your life.
A romantic suspense novel. As a teenager out looking for beer, she's in the bathroom when the security guard is shot & killed by one of her friends. Her past catches up with her when she's the prosecuter in court and there's another shooting.
I enjoyed reading this story about how the past could catch up with a person and what a person does to protect themselves and what they have accomplished. There is plenty of action and adventure.
this book keeps you entertained from the very first page. where most books start good & fade, this one never fades & keeps your attention from paragraph to paragraph. never a dull moment
I usually do not give romantic suspense higher than a 3 or 3.5. But this one had a little bit extra. A very good read. Even when Kate makes wrong-headed stubborn decisions.
This was a little slow read at first until you got to the court room scenes. It picked up after that. I enjoyed the twists and turns. It was a good one-time read for me.
This was a Reader's Digest Condensed Book edition. It was fast paced, a real page turner. I liked it because it was a love story as well as a mystery/thriller.
I had a hard time sympathizing with the heroine in this story, she made a lot of choices that just seemed stupid to me. This is not one I'll be keeping.
good mystery.first time I have read this author. I usually thought her style was too romance like. It did have a pat romantic ending but the story was good.
Could not put this book down once I started it. I loved the suspense. This is my first book by this author, looking forward to reading more.
