Given its intriguing subject matter -- the value of art, and particularly the reasons for the rapidly escalating prices being paid in recent years for modern and contemporary art -- this book was quite disappointing. I'm not sure if that was a result of 1) the author's often awkward syntax, 2) a bad translation from French to English, 3) the inherently squishy subject matters of art, art criticism, and economics applied to abstract concepts, or 4) a combination of all of these things, but I want ...more

this book caught my eye on the shelves of the local library when i was browsing the art section. it's a subject that interests me - how do you assign a monetary value to an artwork - and this book's nicely sized. a quick flick through showed that it wouldn't be too hard to read.

the original was written in french and the writing has an interesting quirkiness about it, partly because it has been translated but also because benhamou-huet
