Gay Degani has a stunning voice, gripping and charged, and loaded with such authentic realism, that her literary stories borderline nonfiction horrors. Beneath the anguish of hardship, Degani’s stories offer subtle hope, charm, and humor that captures the reader and pulls them into another's life that is rich with details and character. Even if the reader has never experienced such conflict, the confidence in Degani’s writing and the style with which she portrays her characters’ emotions will ha ...more

A collection of eight very strong literary stories that are well grounded in reality and emotionally charged. Each story was a cut above the usual, and my favorites were "Monsoon", "Dani-Girl's Guide to Getting Everything Right", and "Pomegranate". I was also quite fond of "Chair Girl" though it is a slighter story, more like what I often write. What I particularly admire in Ms. Degani's work is her consistent ability to characterize intensely in so few words, and her ability to keep plot moving ...more

The stories in ‘Pomegranate’ convince you Gay Degani’s been in your shoes, thought your thoughts, felt your emotions. You realize that you are stronger than you thought you were, the ironies of life won’t stop the rain from falling, and that we need to smile when the opportunities present themselves. Beautiful prose, beautiful stories, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

The simplicity of the writing works well, and for me simple, effective writing is a pleasure to read. The predominantly female characters are well written, and I was clamoring for more after reading all of the stories in one sitting. I have one problem with this collection, though, and it's the same problem I've had with Alice Munro: everything is sad. Don't expect t ...more
