I was really disappointed with this book. If it was meant for young preteens it's a little dark. It addresses family abuse both mental and physical, death, theft, and selfishness. That was all in the first chapter and it didn't get better at any point. There was really no lightheartedness to help the mood of the book and enable the reader to have hope for the protagonist.

The book opens at a funeral. Peer's father has just died after completing a new longboat. Before the funeral is even over, Peer's uncle shows up to claim Peer and any money or valuables left to take off with him to Troll Fell. Peer has no choice but to move in with his two cruel uncles, who treat him as a servant, sometimes remember to feed him, and hit him whenever they feel like it. Peer's only friend on the place, and it's a unpredictable friend too, is a sort of house spirit called a Nis. In

Troll Fell is about a boy named Peer whos father just died, and his uncles take him to their mill in Troll Fell, a place full of trolls and other soon to be explained mysteries. The setting is in Troll Fell and the main character is Peer. Peer's main external conflict is him having to deal with his two mean uncles. They always bully him and they make him work all day with little food. Peer's main internal is, him being afraid that his uncles might take him to the Gaffer, a troll who is very scar

This novel opens at the funeral of Peer Ulfsson's father. Comforted by his friends and neighbours at Hammerhaven, where his father was a carpenter, Peer is shocked when his horrible uncle Baldur Grimsson turns up to take him to his mill at Troll Fell. At first Peer is ill treated and kept short of food as he does all the chores at the mill and farm, but then he finds that Baldur and his twin brother Grim, greedily obsessed with the trolls' gold, have a more sinister plan for Peer and his friend

This was a delightful book. Based in Norse culture and mythology, this is the story of twelve-year-old Peer Ulfsson, whose father has just died. He is whisked into the care of his gigantic, disgusting, greedy, conniving twin uncles, who intend to sell him to the Trolls who live under the mountain for a pile of gold. He must befriend Hilde, a girl who live further up in Troll Fell and find a way to keep himself from becoming enslaved to the Trolls forever.

Carrying on the story of the life of Peers and his adoptive family where Troll Blood left off, this book delves into slightly darker territory. The themes are edging close to a bit too mature for kids, however, by dealing with those themes from a kid's perspective, Langrish has managed to do two things.
First, she's made the story challenging and still inviting for young readers, giving them things to think about that go beyond their everyday lives, and this is important for kids lear More...

My thoughts:
After stumbling through Icarceron, I was really in the mood for something less ambiguous. I was looking for a fun, exciting but comprehendible read, and boy did I find one!
Troll Fell, the first book in the Troll Trilogy by Katherine Langrish, has all the ingredients for being an awesome fantasy series. Troll Fell was an amazing book. I didn't like putting it down because of how unpredictable it is. It is full of adventure, it changes a lot, and it never gets boring. I would definatly recommend it to young adults who like that type of book. The book Troll Fell takes place in an area called Troll Fell. It is in the mountains next to the sea. A big part of the story is the trolls in the hill, so the story could not take place anywhere else. One of the main parts of the story is that the trolls st

Excellent!
A great middle-grade fantasy that turns a fairy-tale plot into something very solid and realistic. This is a book where kids get dirty, they get yelled at, they have to face up to abusive adults, they have to grasp a realistic situation where nobody else can take responsibility for solving the problems they have to face. No hand waves covering over things the author does't want you to think about, no moralizing.
The world isn't fair: fight back.

This book is an excellent kids fantasy. Some obvious plot twists for adult readers like me. I thought the story was imaginative in a facinating time in history (the Vikings). The landscape was not always clearly defined. Characters were pretty generic. Overall, it was a good read but not a gripping page turner like Artemis Fowl or Children of the Lamp series.

This is book two of the trilogy and takes place a few years after the first. It is more of a coming of age story. Our hero has grown and as typical of most teenage boys is frustrated by a girl. He sets out to impress her and discovers a sinister plot. With her help, he foils the plot and learns a valuable life lesson; if you want a woman to be interested in you, you're going to have to work at it. A lot. Life lessons aside, this book touches on another aspect of mythology that is at best briefly

I first read this in primary school and have read it many times since then. The more I read this book the more I realise that though it is a little simplistic and written for younger readers it still has sections which are complex and interesting and manages to tell a genuinely engaging story.

It was a good book but I have one question. Is this book at all related to the play Peer Gynt? Because, the main character name is peer like in the play and in the play the character gets kidnapped by trolls. Also Chapter 16 is called In the Hall of the Mountain King and in the play there is a piece of music that is played called In the Hall of the Mountain King.

A bit of a disappointment. Author kind of plowed through story without really allowing you to get to know characters real well although awful things happen to main character. Lot of holes in this book, especially character development. My 8 year old son enjoyed it though and he wants to continue the series so I will join him.

This was a cute story and I liked the utilization of many the many creatures from Norse mythology. The story was somewhat formulaic but the characters were well fleshed out. I thought that Peer could have been a little more sympathetic and I wanted more details on the monsters but over all a pretty good first book for Ms. Langrish. I will read Troll Blood when I can find a copy.

Lovely storytelling, especially if you enjoy fairly traditional uses of folk lore. Trolls, a Nis (think Hob or Brownie), and Granny Green-Teeth. Excellent for the middle grade set.

I was browsing the library shelves and stumbled upon this book. With my norwegian viking heritage, I had to check it out. As I read the book, I felt excitement as I visualized the fjords of Norway and the landscape, climate and environs of Scandinavia. And then their is the little troll, with long nose, fury head and tail, that sits on my mantle next to my viking long boat, laughing at me as I read about the Hall of the Mountain King. The description in the book was vivid and realistic and th

Not a horrible book and not an excellent book. Just a solid middling book. A decent tale with few unanticipated turns but nothing out of the ordinary for the genre either.

I picked up this book because I love the cover, so kudos to whoever designed it! I liked the setting, the kids were fun to read about, and the villains were creepy. I'm excited to read the sequels.

I wish I could give this a three 1/2. I really enjoyed this series but this book was probably my least favorite of the series. Very light read, but it's entertaining.

I loved this. I'm really surprised it's this author's first novel. It's an interesting story. I got so sucked in. Hope there's more to come.

This book truly shows how much of an imagination an author can have! Each and every character has the most interesting personality. Thick plot.

This would be a good read aloud to preteen boys. It's a little bit stereotypical and simplistic, but would be fun for kids, very dramatic.

I love Katherine Langrish! She describes this world so beautifully. A great, entertaining book that will keep you turning pages.

Really enjoyable book. I love the storyline and the characters! I also love the setting- how it's a completely different world. That's why books are so good!!

I don't usually like "troll" books! Not sure why I picked it up, but it was pretty good. Very like-able main character.

What a fun story! A bit predictable in places but engaging the entire way through. Wonderful, happy ending! Cannot wait to read the second book.

Just began this two nights ago and am enjoying myself so far. A fun read with a satisfying ending. Don't think I'll read the others in this series though.
