I almost skipped sharing this one, because I really am a Mo Willems fan, and I don’t want to turn anyone off to his funny and Preschooler-approved books. But this one let me down a little. The text is trademark Willems… humor for the adults, but also easily repeatable and well-structured for the youngest readers. In this story, Cat is trying to get all his animal friends ready for bed. Each friend is busy doing some part of the bedtime routine: brushing teeth, getting water, taking a bath, readi...more
Cheerful Cat is back! In this story, Cat comes to find all of her friends, Sheep, Pig, Giraffe, Crab, Horse and Shark, and coaxes them into slumber. When Cat happens upon each friend, they are all in a different stage of the bedtime ritual. Sheep is reading, Giraffe is brushing his teeth, etc. Little readers will most enjoy Horse's stage in the ritual - what youngster doesn't love a little good, clean potty humor? But what happens when Cat gets to Owl? You can just imagine what Willems does with...more
I really liked the illustrations in this book, simple and bright, very engaging. The text is cute, it's about Cat the Cat going to all the animals to tell them it's bed time. There is very little writing. That would be good for a child who might be just learning to read. Cat finds all the other animals engaged in different activities, which are sometimes unexpected and amusing. The last animal Cat goes to is Owl, who Cat realizes doesn't need to be told it's time to sleep. It's a nice bed time b...more
This book is so cute! I love cats and I love Mo Willems humor and illustrations. This book is so very simple and yet completely endearing. Cat the Cat realizes it's late and checks to make sure all of her friends are getting ready for bed. Each animal is involved in a different bedtime routine step that will be familiar to children. And then Cat gets to Owl who is not getting for bed at all, but just about to start his night. A completely charming, fun bedtime book for preschoolers.
Huh. Didn't charm me as much as most of Willems' work. Still, it's distinctly stamped with his sly genius and any fans should check it (or one of the other in the series) out!
Well. This is weird. I accidentally read it again on Dec. 3. This time I absolutely loved it. I loved that the critters were not all ordinary kitties and bunnies (a giraffe, a crab, and a shark are included)! I loved the fact that in this book that is so simple a 3 yo could, from it, learn phonics, there's a story, a climax...more

Dear Mo,
Thank you so much for writing easy reader books that are actually fun for kids and parents to read! You have revolutionized this genre. I love these book as well as the Piggie and Gerald series. You have added spice to our nightly bedtime stories. I don't know how many times we read the page in this book, "I'm on it." My kids laughed every time, okay I giggled as well. Please continue to crank out these amazing books!
Sincerely,
So long Dick and Jane

I love Mo and anything he writes, but there is something soothing and comforting in his short "Cat the Cat" stories. In this entry, our feline friend is getting all her friends to get read for bed, except for Owl who obviously is just getting started with his evening. The most surreal illustration had to be Horse on the toilet; perhaps too much information there, Mo? :)
Highly recommended for ages three and up, and great for bedtime.

Genre: Modern fantasy
Age: 4-8
Summary: In this children's book by the awesome Mo Willems, a cat is putting everyone to sleep. The giraffe brushes his teeth, the crab gets a drink of water, the horse goes potty, and the owl.....well, he stays up all night.
Reflection: I love Mo Willems. Both of my boys really respond to his books. He is an amazing artist.

beginning readers and parents reading with them
This is a fun reading primer in the Cat the Cat series by Mo Willems. It's perfect for bedtime and has a simple narrative and colorful illustrations that will entertain young readers. Our youngest was very proud that she could read this book all by herself.
Ahhh Mo Willems. So silly, that man. I love the voice in this book. Cat tries to get everyone to sleep until she meets an owl--oh wait, nevermind. I can't wait to use this one at PJ Storytime! Might also be good for beginning readers; the sentence structure is simple and always the same, and the words are repeated often. Cute!
Love the illustrations and the simple text. It seems to be designed/written for beginning readers, but I think it can appeal to toddlers and preschoolers, as well. The illustrations are fun and colorful, and the simple "time to sleep, __ the ___ " format is repetition that is beloved by toddlers especially.
Cute as always, but I don't think the story goes anywhere or does a whole lot. His other books are much stronger in my opinion. Sophie was lukewarm on this one. On the one hand, it was very easy to repeat, but as it doesn't really go anywhere interesting she didn't have much motivation to repeat it.
This Willems series is for the very earliest readers, those not quite ready for Elephant & Piggie. They're simple, colorful, cute, and have a surprise or humorous ending, making them absolutely perfect for kids who are just starting to understand phonics.
Good but not great. Works for a lot of themes but is missing the classic Mo Willems humor. There is a picture of a horse on a toilet which got a good laugh.
My six year old daughter loves reading this book. Funny story and great illustrations. Another home run from Mo!
Maybe Willems has too high a standard. To me this was just a regular picture book and didn't live up to my expectations.
