This has been my not-quite-first bodice ripper. I have learnt from a friend that these sort of books are the equivalent of bike training wheels. Fortunately for me, these sorts of books were not mine.
To explain why I even picked up my first "bodice ripper":
1. When I returned to Copenhagen after the summer, I felt book withdrawal, went out and bought a book about the history of romance novels, because it was one of cheapest books there (books...more

Rating: Rent it...one time read.
First Line: The sound of a war horn sliced through the day, announcing the coming of Blackthorne Keep's new lord.
So, after reading the romantically disappointing Sizzle, I was in the mood for some real romance. I turned to Elizabeth Lowell, an old standby, and Untamed, a novel I have read multiple times since first picking it up in high school. Elizabeth Lowell is another romance author who's career I have followed. When I was younger I really enjoyed her historic...more

1st in Medieval Trilogy is Simply Superb!
I bought all in this trilogy (UNTAMED, FORBIDDEN, ENCHANTED) based on the reviews, and for once, the reviews were completely justified. UNTAMED was my first romance by Elizabeth Lowell and since I’ve read many more of hers. It won the RITA Award and I can see why. Her writing is wonderfully historically accurate, her storytelling detailed and full of action and adventure, natural sexual tension and conflict that is not scary, contrived or over the top as...more

The book starts out with the pending marriage of Lady Margaret (Meg) & returning Crusader Dominic le Sabra. Neither have laid eyes on the other before but are both willing to go along with the prearranged marriage. Meg accepts this as her fate (although she is by no means a wimp) & Dominic wants to claim the castle & lands that come along with Meg and begin working on making himself some heirs. Only problem is that Meg happens to be one of the cursed Glendruid (white) witches that fo...more
Unabridged audiobook format - review written for Speaking of Audiobooks How We Listen Column 10/09/09:
Anne Flosnik’s lovely voice was striking and drew me in immediately but her narration lacked the necessary speech variation for many of the secondary characters. However, the heroine’s beautifully accented voice was completely distinguishable from the hero’s almost husky monotone and sometimes that’s all that counts in a romance audiobook. Just finished reading this book. I started reading it because it was recommended as an historical novel of the romance brand. I enjoy those kinds of novels and I enjoy learning about the period history. However, this novel lacked in that area. The first few chapters were of knights and ladies and I found it intrigueing. But as the novel wore on it was more about the knight / hero of the novel trying to get into the pants of his wife / heroine from an arranged marriage. At points, it errupted int...more

This.
This is how to write a decent medieval romance.
Oh, Untamed wasn't perfect by any means--some of those sex scenes were so flowery that I could almost smell the jasmine--but the characterization was amazing.
This is what Mists of Avalon wanted--and failed--to be.
Meg is a strong, female character. Her people love her, and the reasons for this are shown rather than told. She's a healer, regarded by some as a witch, but is actually a Glen...more

This is a romance, and it had the running theme of "my tiny falcon" and if you are not one to tolerate cutsie mushy prose than stay away from this story as it is a CONSTANT theme thrughout the ENTIRE story. I go in to these sorts of romances expecting such a thing. But even I was hard pressed not to roll my eyes and and groan when for the fiftieth time our romantic hero called his lady his litlle falcon and tied bells to her hair and wrists and legs locking her away as he did with his falcon in...more
Thanks to the wonderful members of the newly formed Romance Forum Refugee group at Goodreads, I have a huge new list of romance novels with bearded heroes! Dark beards! Blond beards! Dark staches, too! Yee haw!!!!!!!
And thanks to their recommendations, I discovered a new-to-me romance writer who appears to love beards as much as I do. All of her heroes are hairy! Beards, staches, nice furry chests.....yowzah! I am now the official #1, A++ Fan Of Elizabeth Lowell. Where have you been all my life,...more

I'm mixed about my feelings about this book. Lowell's a pretty good writer, especially with description, imagery, metaphor, and simile, but I never became greatly attached to the characters of her story. Everyone is so very serious. And How is it possible that successful, self confident leaders like Dominic, or even Othello for that matter, be so plagued by jealousy? Not quite believable for me, in either case. And forgive me Shakespeare, for comparing Lowell to you. I did enjoy the read though,...more
Going old school back to the GREATS. Love this author. When friend mentioned seeing her at RWA I had to go back and look at these. This is my favorite in the series. Dominic swoon worthy alpha male I could only dream to write one as well. Reluctantly marries of course Meg the Glendruid witch who can produce no heirs except for true love. Sounds corny but it works. I love a heart tugging romance with a cool setting and well developed characters.

4.5/5.0
Reading any novel set in the medieval era, when a woman was considered less than a man's animals and whose only value was all too often only for breeding purposes, is always somewhat hard even as it is interesting. In "Untamed", Lowell has done an admirable job of allowing those realities to come through, showing the hardships inflicted on a female while keeping the "romance" aspect from getting mired in the bogs of offense.

I did enjoy the journey of Dominic and Meg in growing towards their love. While Meg is the "strong" woman in a time of submission, you can see how much she cares for her people and for her husband. Overall I really enjoyed this book and one part did make me cry at the end. I keep going back and forth whether its 3 or 4 stars. I am going to go with marking 4 stars but its really 3.5 stars. Sometimes I think this time period can be hard to get into with the alpha male and submissive woman stories....more

Cleaning up a mess you made on line can be very boring and time intensive. My friend then is audio! BOOKS!!! With a big mess, that means LOT OF BOOKS! First up is the publisher's summary:

Untamed by Elizabeth Lowell is one of my favorite Historical Romance novels—she is very much neck and neck with Julie Garwood on my list!
It is also among the first Historical Romances I ever read, so this could have some bearing on my love and impressions I have of the historical genre in general.
I know some people do not like them because the men are do ‘do what I tell you’ my little sister’s hates Historical Romances because of that. But really? It doesn’t bother me at...more

This was recommended highly, but I found I really took issue with the theme of the heroine having to be "tamed." The heroine seemed to have no flaws. Her only fault seemed to be going along with the hero's need to completely control everything she did. The hero had major control issues, and it bugs me to see captivity and control being made the basis of the relationship between them. But Lowell is a good writer.
I plan to write more on this series but wanted to put the head up that a bunch of Ms. Lowell's ebooks are $1.99 in kindle! (Should be that way too at BN, etc). So RUN and grab these awesome deals. I love her historicals and many of the earlier ones that are romances! I haven't read any of the recent ones of hers so wasn't sure if she still wrote romance or straight suspense?
But grab these goodies!

I really enjoyed this book, but, OMG, I felt like smacking Dominic with all his talk of land and sons!!! At points he was utterly unlikeable.. Actually, till the moment where he hauls her onto his horse after she gathered herbs... And his distrust of Meg was seiously getting on my nerves!!!
I loved Meg however, and although she was a bit to complacent for my tastes, that was explainable by the fact that everything she did was for the good of her people.

Dominic le Sabre is a Norman knight coming back from the crusades to a promised bride and estates. His intended bride has a curse on her that states no sons will be born of her unless there is true love in her marriage. Although Dominic begins to have feelings for her he is determined not to make himself vulnerable by having true feelings for her. Between the alpha male and the steamy scenes, this one is right up my alley.
Oh my. Ridiculous flowery sex prose. But the story moved quickly, I didn't want to smack the characters over the head and I even liked the objectively questionable falcon-taming metaphor. Because he never wanted to break her, just seduce her, the feeding each other thing was strangely hot and it seemed time appropriate without being unbearable for modern sensibilities.
Dominic is the new Lord of Blackthorn Keep. Meg is his new bride and Lady of the Keep. Dominic wants sons more than anything else so his name will be carried on. All the women in Meg's family line have not been able to bear sons, because there has not been love in the marriage. This is the story of how a relationship changes and grows one day at a time, one crisis at a time, and one choice at a time.
Another disappointment. I'm struggling to recall the last time I read a really good romance novel!
Anyway, this was just too slow. It had potential...I mean how can any Norman/Saxon plot line not have potential in the genre, but the pace just killed it. 300+ pages and no love scene?? Are you kidding me?! It seemed Lowell would have rathered go on describing the land and the keep for interminable lengths than get down to the business of romance. And when there was romance to be had, the dialogue w...more

I enjoyed the writing..the ambrosiac flow of words..the bells..the fantasy! I didn't like the fact that another man's name was linked to the heroine throughout the book..jealousy upto a point is fine but beyond that is irritating and you start wondering about this other guy who happens to be the hero in the sequel..hmm..and a Scot at that! Forbidden? Nay! To be read:)
