This book is a great collection of poems that really reflect diversity and America. Diversity in race as well as the range of emotions in human experience, both are on display in this collection. The collection moves gracefully from one poem to the next, each fitting next to the other to make a cohesive whole. This is helped by Soentpiet’s art which celebrates emotions, humanity and community in the faces he depicts.

Hopkins has created a collection that really meshes well. Each p More...

For the most part I liked the poems in this collection. I do not like the illustrations. This type of photograph quality watercolor with lots of detail always looks to me as if the lighting is too bright. It can distort facial features which I think makes it a bit creepy. I like the multicultural aspect of the poetry particularly Me x 2 done in both English and Spanish, which cleverly illustrates the point. There are a couple of poems that I felt didn’t really fit into the overall mix: A Young S More...

My response to the book: These 16 poems highlight the beauty of Asian-American, African-American, Native-American, Hispanic-American and Caucasian-American girls, boys and women and men. One poem by Jane Medina, Me x 2 or Yo x 2 is presented completely in English and Spanish.

A big 5 stars to this wonderful anthology of poetry. I love how the author decided to showcase every different race in this great country of ours. From the mother sewing in Chinatown to the young Hispanic boy watching the sunset at Guadalupe Peak. From the football hero to the young man returning from war... this book is awesome. My connection with this book is that I have a firegighter and soldier in my family and the book has poems about both. I think everyone should read this book, whether yo More...

"Amazing Faces" is truly an amazing book that is best enjoyed by sharing and reading with friends and family of all ages. The illustrations are gorgeous and truly capture the intended sentiment of each poem. Here's my favorite poem in the book:

Mex x2
I read times two.
I write times two.
I think, I dream,
I cry times two.

I laugh times two.
I'm right times two.
I sing, I ask,
I try times two.

I do twice as much

This collection of poems celebrates diversity. Lee Bennett Hopkins has compiled a selection of poetry that speaks to the shared experiences and emotions of people regardless of their race, culture, or national origin. This anthology includes works from Nikki Grimes, Janet Wong, Pat Mora and many other celebrated poets and concludes with Langston Hughes' celebrated poem--My People. Chris Soentpiet's illustrations reflect the diversity of poets and experiences shared in this book.

This collection of sixteen poems portray the many kinds of people that make up our nation. Diversity in race, age, gender, and various emotions are present. The book if full of expressive illustrations that help bring each poem to life. Each reader will be able to relate to some of the poems on a personal level because they are about life. I especially enjoyed A Young Soldier by Prince Redcloud. This collection of poems will help readers celebrate what America is all about.

Amazing Faces is a fascinating book that would assist me in teaching a great Social Studies lesson on the status of our current population and culture in the United States. Each page has a beautiful poem that describes the lifestyle of a different individual from a different background. However, the book also conveys a sense of one single community. This simple lesson would apply to 4th graders.

Lee Bennett Hopkins has done a wonderful job choosing poems for this book. The style of poetry is varied, as are the subjects discussed and cultures represented. The vibrant and detailed illustrations by Chris Soentpiet make the poems even better. I read a five selections aloud to my fifth grade classes yesterday, and both the poems and illustrations were met with approval.

Hopkins has compiled a stellar collection of poetry celebrating the many different faces of America. Many of the poets are well-known (Yolen, Hughes, Mora, Grimes), but I must admit it's Soentpiet's illustrations that are the real star of the book. Beautifully realistic, he captures the nuances in age, color, and emotion in a way that jumps off the page.

Chris Soentpiet did a great job illustrating this collection of poems. They are all face oriented in some way, even if they aren't specifically about faces in every case. This is a great collection of poems, many of them are free form while others just great pieces of rhyming or two voice poetry. Very nicely done.
