The graphic novel Troublemaker is the third in Janet Evanovich's Alex Barnaby series following two print novels - Metro Girl and Motor Mouth. I had no problem following the graphic novel without having read the previous books. The short character introductions were invaluable.

Troublemaker is wonderfully drawn. I enjoy graphic novels with clean lines and crisp colors over heavily shaded or unnecessarily complicated drawings and Troublemaker was absolutely perfect in that respect.

Don't waste your money on this train wreck of a comic with no story. Ms Evanovich must have gathered unused partial chapters from early books, added a not believable premise of Rosa getting kidnapped, and spit out a so-called graphic novel of barely 100 pages and 1,500 words from a scap heap. That makes it shorter than the usual magazine article. Allow 20-30 minutes tops to read this, even if you stop to enjoy the art.

Janet and Alex Evanovich should be embarrassed. Only Artist Joelle Jones has...more

Unlike a lot of people who are giving this bad reviews because it's a graphic novel and they don't seem to think they're worth your time, I love graphic novels. However...When I saw this book on the library shelf, my first thought was that I’m tired of every book in the world getting the ‘manga treatment.’ The next thought was ‘I’m bored’ so I grabbed this and book two, thinking that at least Stephanie Plum is a fun character. Only, I hadn’t looked closely enough to see that it wasn’t a Stephani...more

This is the first of two volumes that brings back the characters of Alex Barnaby, NASCAR mechanic, and Sam Hooker, NASCAR racer, in a new format ... comic book style. Alex has come back to Florida at the request of her friend Rosa, who is concerned that a mutual friend named Felicia has disappeared. After checking out her station at a cigar-making shop, it quickly becomes clear that she has been kidnapped, and all the clues point to someone with voodoo connections.

Barnaby and Hooker are off on t...more

Janet Evanovich is taking a new approach to her Alex Barnaby series (Metro Girl, Motor Mouth) and teamed up with her daughter, Alex, to create a graphic novel. Trouble Maker features the artwork of Joëlle Jones and shares many of the characters in the traditional novels.

NASCAR mechanic Alex Barnaby seems to always find trouble and often NASCAR driver Sam Hooker is in the middle of it. A man has gone missing and it’s up to Alex and Sam to find him. In their quest they encounter Petro Voodoo, seve...more

A very cool addition to the Evanovich franchise!

I am a relatively new reader of Janet Evanovich's novels, since I am only on book Eleven of her Stephanie Plum series, but I am a big enough fan to have jumped at the chance to review her new Graphic Novel, Troublemaker, book one in the Barnaby and Hooker graphic novel series.

Evanovich fans who have already started reading the Alex Barnaby series will be thrilled that her story continues with the graphic novel. If you have started reading the serie...more

The parenthetical bit "(A Barnaby and Hooker Graphic Novel #3)" is a bit confusing. From what I gather, there are three Barnaby and Hooker series - Metro Girl, Motor Mouth, and Troublemaker - but as far as I can find only Troublemaker has a graphic novel form.
I do wonder to whom this book is aimed. This being the only Evanovich title I've ever read, I suspect it's meant for those who already follow any of the Barnaby and Hooker series, since the graphic novel doesn't do a great job at introducin...more

This was my first graphic novel that I have ever read. This month for book club, each member is reading a different graphic novel, and this is the one I chose. I have read all of the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich so I thought I would enjoy this book. There are a lot of similarities in this graphic novel and Stephanie Plum novels (female main character with a crazy best friend, boyfriend, crime to be solved, crazy relatives, obsession with food, and mystery is solved by accident/coinci...more

A short, but a fun introduction to two of Janet Evanovich's characters, Alexandra Barnaby, aka Barney, an auto mechanic and race car driver Sam Hooker. When not working on and in a race car, these two pursue a relationship and whatever mystery comes their way. Basically romance novels with adventure and humor thrown in, which is Evanovich's forte.
This is a graphic novel, and it may not be for those of Evanovich's fans who aren't used to that medium, but tt made me want to go out and read the tw...more

TGIF, and welcome to another doubleheader here @ The Scoop. Tomorrow is Digital short Saturday and we have another doubleheader coming at you. First up is Barry Eisler’s The Lost Coast, and then later in day is Big Daddy Abel’s Open Mic. His debut is making noise on Amazon Kindle garnering almost 20, 5 star reviews in its first week of release. Good stuff as far as I am concerned. Okay, enough of that, put on your cape and cowl and to the graphic novel, “Holy novelist crossing over to graphic no...more

I had tried One for the Money ages ago, but barely got through a dozen pages before I gave it up.

Fast forward, and I picked volume 1 and 2 up on a whim at the library. I find graphic novel versions/stories by "regular" authors are a good way (for me) to get a feel for their books (though not always, especially when the art is crap - I refuse to read Christine Feehan for that reason). So I decided to give Evanovich a second chance.

Instead, I found a fun, colourful romp, with a light mystery and...more

This is a graphic novel version of the Alex Barnaby books (Metro Girl and Motor Mouth). I like to read graphic novels, especially of series I haven't read because it gives me a quick glimpse of potential series' I might like. I really enjoyed this book. My mom reads the Stephanie Plum books and says they are great but I haven't gotten into them yet.
I can see why Janet Evanovich is so popular. Her books combine action with humor and slightly off-kilter romance. I rather like that. I hate when the...more

The graphic novel Troble Maker by Janet and Alex Evanovich is trite, with sophomoric humor, characters that are stereotypes from the worst investigative television shows with a simplistic, forgettable storyline. The plot feels like an episode of Scooby-Doo mixed with an episode of Moonlighting. It begins with the female heroine Barnaby, all doe-eyed and sexily clad, discovering the details of a missing friend. Hooker, the rugged male hero enters the picture in a stumbling, bumbling way, immediat...more

If I could give less than a star, I would. Although the illustrations are eye-catching and adorable (Hunter is a cartoon babe!), it wasn't enough for me to want to continue this series. In the beginning of the novel, I had a hard time figuring out what was even going on. I had to read several pages multiple times and still felt confused. We are randomly introduced to characters with a full page spread for each, EXCEPT for Rosa, the one character that everyone is concerned with saving. The story...more

This was truly terrible. I've read books by Janet Evanovich before, and enjoyed them. The problem in this graphic novel seems to be that neither Evanovich has any clue how to write for this medium. It's like they thought, "Hey, it has pictures! That's less work! We don't need a plot, or character development! They can see it all for themselves! In the pictures!" Just because a comic has a visual element doesn't mean you can slack off on the storytelling, ladies. Hooker and Barnaby are annoying a...more

I have always loved comics. As age 46, there's still a part of me that wants to pick up the Archie's Digest at the supermarket when I'm there--if only it wasn't a waste of money because it would be read in 30 minutes and then I'd not want to read it again...

I actually really liked this book because of the visuals. It was a really, really quick read though--I had it finished in around 30 minutes. Glad I picked it up from the library and didn't pay for it. Unfortunately the library doesn't have th...more

I was so disapointed by this one! Hadn't ever read a graphic novel before but I had really liked Metro Girl and Motor Mouth so I had to try it. I found it really frustrating to read the story in this format. The pictures were kind of fun but it just felt too choppy compared to the books. The story line with Sam's mom just didn't really seem to fit in with it since all of the rest was about Rosa getting kidnapped and Alex and Sam trying to find her. Maybe the next one will tie more into the mothe...more

I guess I should have realized that I would be disappointed when this book was said to be a graphic novel. Graphic novels disappoint me because it keeps me from using my brain to 'see' the setting for the story. Since it has the pictures in front of me, I can't use my very vivid imagination to make the setting better (or worse if need be) than the story is written. The book was a super quick read that left me hanging and not necessarily wanting to read more. This is the first book by Janet Evano...more

Troublemaker is the first graphic novel in the Janet Evanovich/ Alex Evanovich series but it is actually the third book in the Barnaby & Hooker series. I found this to be confusing right off the bat although the characters are reintroduced in the graphic novel so you can follow without reading the previous books. I was very disappointed with this slim volume. It is only about 105 pages and it does not tell much of a story at all. It seems to be setting the characters and story up for the sec...more

Was a gift from my husband, because he knows that I like Janet Evanovich. I tried to read Motor Mouth a couple of years ago, and it failed the 100 page rule, so I wouldn't have picked this one up on my own. I think that the comic genre was really good to this book - they really captured the humour. I was disappointed that I didn't laugh out loud (I usually do for Janet's books), but I liked it enough to consider reading the next one. In general, though, I think that ~$20 is a lot for a book that...more

So far, so good! I've completed the first of two books in the set comprising the third tale in the Hooker and Barnaby series. I wasn't sure how Evanovich would translate into comics, but it's wonderful. There was one moment of classic Evanovich grossness when Hooker stuffs the sandwhich in his mouth that he'd taken out of the dog's, but it wouldn't be Evanovich without hot guys and icky things with dogs. *sudders at the memory of Stephanie Plum's hair*

My students (and other people) often praise Evanovich for her pulpy mysteries. But if this graphic novel is anything to go by, they are not my kind of book. The characters are bland and lifeless, the dialogue is uninspired, and the story lacks any kind of urgency or intrigue. Every scene seems painfully geared toward a single predictable goal: Be excited! Sense the sexual tension! Chuckle at the clever wordplay!

The art is clear and the colors are good, but that only earns the book one star. The...more

Everybody else who's reviewing this book poorly seems to be doing so on the sole basis of the fact that their beloved characters are appearing in a graphic novel. Well, I AM a fan of graphic novels, I love Joelle Jones, and I'm STILL giving it a one-star review, because it is DREADFUL. Not because it's a comic book, but because the characters are stock and one-note, the plot is poorly strung together and rife with cliches, and the dialogue is cheesy. But boy oh boy can Joelle Jones draw; I hope...more

I DO NOT like graphic novels. I DO like Ms Evanovich and enjoyed the Barnaby & Hooker books. I was looking forward to a continuation of the story but this was what was offered. I purchased it depite my misgivings. Not only is it a graphic novel it only contains the first four chapters. At these prices I think I'll skip the rest. Let me know when you bring them back to book format. For the price of four chapters of graphics (Oh lets just call them what they are Comics) I can get the whole sto...more

Evanovichs series about female mechanic Alex and racecar driver Sam is turned into a pair of graphic novels. (You can't read volume 1 without volume 2 to reach some level of conclusion). Alex gets an exploding voodoo doll in the mail and they soon learn that a friend in Miami has disappeared, with a signs of a search in his apartment and plastic hand in his mailbox providing the only clues. The wild action balanced with continual comedic skits are artfully illustrated. The plot is just too thin...more

I grabbed this book on a whim (as I do most of my books) because it surprised me that Janet Evanovich had a graphic novel out. I read it in like 15 minutes, if that, very fast read and very cute. I enjoyed it. It has a lot of the elements from her Plum series...fast action, cheeky strong heroines...etc...and the art work and colors are great. I'm going to get the second graphic novel in the series, but probably won't read the book version that it stemmed from. I think I'll stick to the graphic n...more

It was just ok. The story was less detailed than in the book. Which could be understandable, but this is a graphic novel we are talking about. If you can manage to show me peoples life, death, revolution and reincarnation in just 4 panel then perhaps you can give me even a little more background on the characters? Any of the characters? I feel so much of the detail and the art within the writing was lost. I have been reading the graphic novels as if I has no idea whom the author was or what the...more

If you have not read motor mouth or metro girl do not get this book you will nit understand many of the jokes, some of the situations and even the characters and their relationships.

If you have read either or both of the motor mouth and metro girl then you might like this book. It is not either of those books just done graphic novel style it is actually somewhat of a new story line. It is nit one I would pay lots of money for or wait in line for but if you got it it us worth a little time readi...more

Would rather this be a novel, but I'm just happy to have another Barnaby story...but not this story! I was really disappointed. I mean, I was a big fan of the novels and I thought it would be fun to read a graphic novel, but to story sucked. Nothing was built, nothing was exciting and it wasn't a page turner. Nothing really happened. I mean, it was okay...which is pretty generous for me to say, but nothing happened. Alex and Janet should have spent more time developing the story to at least make...more
