It's history LITE. Nicely, entertainingly written. But a lot of sweeping statements wth few details, no footnotes. The best part was the chronological chart at the end which shows Byzantine history alongside Western European, Asian, and South/Latin American history during the same time periods. Bravo!

This book gets points for being informational, however that does not excuse the crappy writing style. The sentences were ugly and hard to follow. I did learn from this book, but it was really difficult to get into and understand.

A decent short history of the Byzantine Empire giving an overview and some of the flavor of the empire for elementary/middle school students. We read this as part of my son's history curriculum.
