**Mild but fun spoilers that shouldn't hurt your enjoyment of the book**

This, the original novelization of Raiders of the Lost Ark, has to be one of the strangest movie-tie-ins I've ever read.

I admit that I haven't read many novelizations, but I was always under the impression that they were meant to reflect the movie. The action should be the same, the plot should be the same, and even the dialogue, for the most part, should be the same. Any artistic license taken should be to fill in the main...more

The… tall man in a leather jacket and a brimmed felt hat… who lead the group was called Indiana Jones. He was muscular in the way one might associate with an athlete not quite beyond his prime. He had several days’ growth of dirty blonde beard and streaks of dark sweat on a face that might once have been handsome in a facile, photogenic fashion. Now, though, there were tiny lines around his eyes, the corners of the mouth, changing the almost bland good looks into an expression of character, dept...more

Papa: What the heck are you talking about? Are you rewriting Raiders?

Miloš: No. No, I'm not rewriting Raiders.

Papa: Then what are you doing?

I forgot how different this book was from the final film. Indy Jones is quite the ho tamer! He is dating one of his students when we see him at College and he flirts much more brazenly than the character ever did in any of the films and he even loses his whip and his hat! The villain, Belloq, gets quite a lot of space devoted to him, which makes that angle more interesting as well. Not a bad adventure novel and an interesting look at an early version of Indiana Jones before he solidified into th...more

Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of my personal favorites of the whole Indiana Jones film franchise. I have read a couple of the other Indiana Jones books and found them to be fun. As a big big big fan of Indiana Jones I thought that this film to book adaption would be great. And it was, just not as much I thought. In the novel version of Raider, Indiana Jones seems more like a flirt and comes off as a bit of a jerk. Not to mention the way Marion and Belloq are described as. Marion wanting to have...more

I read the book as soon as I saw the movie which I thought was WOW! The novelization: not as wow. Campbell Black captures the tone of the '30s in which the story is based yet it lacks the film's spirit of adventure. And how'd they get out of that plane anyway? (Hint: See the film AGAIN to find out.) Temple of Doom the book was waaay better, as far as novels of Indy go.

The book offers a good novelization of the iconic movie, but doesn't do more to go into the motivations of the protagonists.

This is understandable since almost nothing is known about Indiana Jones this early.. but still, one can wish.. :)

I'm currently reading the Indiana Jones series and so far I've read The Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Temple of Doom. I love them but I think the author was trying to be a bit too much like the movie so every single detail is described hugely.

Read this a long time ago, as a kid. The book added nothing to the already awesome movie. By the time I'd read movie adaptations for Black Hole, Empire Strikes Back and Temple of Doom, I realized there was no point in ever reading another.

Of the Indy novelizations, Raiders of the Lost Ark is probably the most different from the final movie. Changes are inevitable since the author of the novel is writing from the script at the same time that the filmmakers are shooting from it and divergent paths arise that cannot be reconvened. Here, the character of Indiana Jones and the entire environment is darker and rougher than the familiar movie persona. The novel is a fun read for those willing to accept the differences and in some ways a...more

I recently read this, it was a good fast read; and explains some stuff in Raiders that I didn't know about.
Bradley
Yet another action movie that did not translate well into book form. Faithful to the movie but ho-hum.

Forgotten that I had read this one somewhere around 1983. Pretty good!
Lindsay
Same as the movie but not as good, just like most books that are based off movies are.

Marginally better than the Temple of Doom. Indy is a bit of a lecher!

My all-time favorite movie! Must read the book.

Why in god's name did I buy this thing?

Not bad, it just like the movie but it was nice to know some of what Indy was thinking.
Emma
It was amazing

Yes, this was during my movie-adaptation phase (I was about 12 years old). I remember there being three foil covers for this book: gold, red and blue. I remember buying the gold one because it seemed more Raider-ish. The red and blue ones seemed cheap to me. I wasn't having it.

I read this originally after seeing the film and, whilst it does stick fairly well to that, some of the background stuff is a little darker than I wanted it to be. Not badly written at all but not quite the book of the film either.
Sam
A pleasing, nostalgic adventure story that you can enjoy without being bored. Overall, a classic adaptation of a classic movie.

Nov 03, 2008 Ian rated it 1 of 5 stars  ·  review of another edition Recommends it for: no one! It's awful: Indy's hat gets lost and Marion gets raped about 30 times.
An awful, awful adaptation. And he loses his hat at the end! Epic fail.

Another adventure of professor Indiana Jones, great movie too!
Trini
My 10 year old self thought this was one bad-ass book.
Connery
This was a great book that i highly recommend.

I never thought I'd say this, but see the movie.
