Amusing though smacked a little too much of labor strikes and typical corporate bad guys vs. dissatisfied workers for my taste... I know, I know, it is a kids book, though, and it IS hilarious to think of those cows click-clack-mooing away in the barn! :-)

Comments on the Story:

Have you ever wondered what cows would ask for if they could some how manage to type a letter to the farmer? Well if you want to find out then you should read this book.

Recommend Uses for this Book:

This book would be a great book for a preschool storytime. I have thought of using this book for "working together" type themes, because the cows work together to get something they want. This might also be a great story to do a flannel board.

I love this more every time I read it. And it still amuses both of them (the kids I mean).

And while I'm thinking about it, let me add that I wish every picture book included a note about how the art was done. Maybe kids don't care, I've never thought to ask them, but I love that.

HA HA! Workers of the world unite! I'm not sure how I accidentally checked out this book on how to explain union movements to your toddler, but this was a h-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s, bizarre, and unexpected read.

We've all heard that the "pen is mightier than the sword" and "the squeaky wheel gets the grease," well in Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, Farmer Brown learns firsthand just how true these adages are when his cows find a typewriter in the barn and demand better treatment.

When Farmer Brown first hears the click-clack sounds coming from the barn, he tries digging out the wax buildup in his ears because cows can't type!

But these cows can, and they nail their demands on the barn...more

You know you have a hit when you have a room full of preschoolers laughing their adorable little arses off. It is full of the kind of humorous incongruity and repetition that younger kids eat up! This story involves a mini farm revolt in which suddenly literate cows and chickens go on strike - a move which completely befuddles poor Farmer Brown. I'll be honest and say that I am not in love with the artwork - which I only mention since this is a Caldecott Honor book - but artistic snobbery aside...more

I really enjoyed this book and think it would be a great choice for a read aloud. It introduces a rather advanced process of conflict resolution – a demand followed by a strike, ultimatum, and finally, compromise – in a simple and clever way. The book is as beautifully illustrated. Through watercolor washes, the illustrator’s pictures support the story, depicting Farmer Brown’s farm and high maintenance animals in a cheery and playful way, fully worthy of the Caldecott Honors bestowed upon the...more

For my read aloud, I chose "Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type" by Doreen Cronin. I read this book for the first time my sophomore year in college in my music education class, and have loved it ever since. There are a few reasons this book is a great choice for a read aloud, the first being the illustrations by Betsy Lewin. Each page is filled from top to bottom with colorful and fun cartoon-like pictures that are great for keeping children's attention on the book. Another reason this is a great re...more

I chose "Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type" for one of my picture book selections because I thought it was a very humorous book with excellent illustrations that really added to the text. I could see my kindergarteners or first graders loving this book. I think the text is very funny especially since the cows and chickens ask for electric blankets. That is something so silly that you laugh when you read it. I also like that every time the cows type it repeats "click, clack, moo. Click, clack, moo...more

Both the storyline by Doreen Cronin and illustrations by Betsy Lewin bring this story to life and personify the barnyard animals. The pictures encompass a wide range of detailed watercolor and depict a traditional American farm setting. The close ups on Farmer Brown’s face and his body language truly capture his emotions and provide the audience with useful context clues. I enjoy the fact that the cows found an old typewriter in the barn and are putting it to good use to get their point across....more

Doreen Cronin's book left me laughing out loud! On Farmer Brown's farm, he has some smart cows who have learned how to use the typewriter. The cows demand electric blankets and go on a milk strike when Farmer Brown refuses their demand. The hens on the farm get in on the typewriter action and go on an egg strike when Farmer Brown refuses their demand for electric blankets. These strikes infuriate Farmer Brown and he wonders how he is going to run a farm without eggs or milk. Using poor duck as a...more

Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type is a hilarious picture book written by Doreen Cronin, with pictures by Betsy Lewin. This book is also a Caldecott Honors Book. This book kept me laughing throughout every page. Doreen Cronin wrote such a clever children's book that someone of any age would find it enjoyable. The pictures by Betsy Lewin are so life like and colorful. They really tell the story that the author is writing and I love her use of the water color. Water color is something that children c...more

This Caldecott Honor book is hilarious. It is about a group of cows on a farm who find a typewriter and demand electric blankets. Eventually, the hens join in too. Now, farmer Brown has no milk and no eggs unless he gives them all electric blankets. All of the debating and deal making is done through the use of the old typewriter. In the end, they end up getting their blankets and the ducks get the typewriter, which they use to demand a diving board for their pond. This book could be used to sho...more

I wasn't all that impressed with Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type. Farmer Brown's cows and hens decide to go on strike and forbid him from getting their milk and eggs because he will not give them electric blankets. These cows can type messages on a typewriter to tell Farmer Brown what they want. Duck, as a neutral party, delivers the ultimatum to the cows and hens from Farmer Brown. Farmer Brown gets the typewriter if the cows get electric blankets. So, the cows trade in their typewriter. At th...more

This Caldecott honor book was a hilarious story that I think many children would love to read. Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type is a story about cows that own a typewriter and are not happy with the conditions in the barn, so they type a letter of complaint to the farmer. The farmer says no to the request so the cows go on strike. The other farm animals on the farm also make special requests by typing letters on the typewriter. The farmer ends up with a lot of animals on "strike," so he takes the...more

I'm glad that this book won at least the Caldecott Honor book. This was a really short but amusing read. I liked that the artist Betsy Lewin wrote her method for making the pictures near the publishing information. I know the kids wouldn't read that but it is very helpful when you want to know how they created their pictures. I knew that it was watercolors but she used them in a very unique way. I also loved the story. The cows found a typewriter and wrote to Farmer Brown requesting electric bla...more

This book was hilarious. The concept of cows, hens, and ducks typing up requests to their Farmer and going on strike until they get their electric blankets and diving board in the pond was really enjoyable and funny to read. The basic plot line is that the cows decide that they want electric blankets to heat up their cold barn at night. Receiving a note saying this, the farmer refuses at first, claiming that it's ridiculous for animals to make such demands. Nonetheless, the cows refuse to produc...more

This story is about some cows on Farmer Brown's farm that get a hold of a typewriter. After they get the typewriter, they send Farmer Brown a note requesting electric blankets for the barn. When Farmer Brown refuses to answer their request, they go on strike and tell him they won't give him any more milk. The hens join the strike after Farmer Brown refuses to give them electric blankets also. Now Farmer Brown has no milk OR eggs! They decide to make Farmer Brown a deal and ask for electric blank...more

Click, Clack, Moo-Cows That Type by Doreen Cronis is a funny story about Farmer Brown's cows that type messages to him on a typewriter. In their messages the demand electric blankets because they are cold at night, and also demand that the hens recieve electric blankets too. Also, in their messages they let Farmer Brown know that they will go on strike with their milk, and that the hens will go on strike with their eggs if they don't receieve the electric blankets. The story "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type" by Doreen Cronin is a fiction Children's book that is about the far animals (mainly the cows and chicken) demanding their farmer for warm blankets. When the farmer refuses to provide his animals with warm blankets, they deny him milk and eggs. The duck, who is "mutual" in the situation, works out an ultimatum with the cows: offer the typewriter in return of getting warm blankets. Both the farmer and the animals agree to this deal, and so the farmer g...more

This Caldecott Honor Book tells the funny story of cows who learn to type and leave the farmer a note demanding electric blankets. When he refuses, they go on strike. After getting the chickens on board with their scheme, the farmer gives in and agrees to send duck (a neutral party) with the blankets if they will give him the typewriter. In the end, the ducks keep the typewriter and write their own note, asking Farmer Brown for a diving board.

The illustrations, done by Betsy Lewin, are very cart...more

The cover:

The only thing I have against this choice of illustration is that the setting is unclear. The hay on the ground sets the scene in the barn, so what's with the vague lavender background? Otherwise, the bold brush outlines set up exactly the right expectations for the story.

The book:

The text's simplicity is used for full value here. Short sentences are balanced with hefty words (the word "ultimatum" actually makes an appearance) for maximum punch, while the clear-cut diction lets the hum...more

The concept of a worker’s strike is presented in Click, Clack, Moo. The story is set on a bucolic fantasy farm, with rolling hills and a big red barn. The cows have discovered an old typewriter, and use their typewriting skills to ask Farmer Brown for electric blankets, as it is very cold in the barn at night.

When Farmer Brown refuses what he sees as silly request, the cows go on strike and refuse to allow the farmer to milk them. The chickens, also cold at night, join with the cows and refuse t...more

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin is a picture book intended for readers in preschool through grade 3. I gave it five stars. In this story, the cows on Farmer Brown’s farm want electric blankets to keep them warm at night. They exchange multiple notes with Farmer Brown, going on strike and denying him milk until the demands are met. The cows bring the hens in too, so the Farmer is denied milk and eggs until the demands are met. What ensues is a humorous story full of making dea...more

Doreen Cronin was a practicing attorney in Manhattan when her first book Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type became a publishing success. But her book was not published overnight, in fact, she had written this barnyard tale even before attending law school but only received rejection letters from publishers. Five years after submitting the original manuscript she got a call from a publisher who want...more
