I got this as an ebook library request, not knowing it was a reprint of the 2nd half of the 2 part novel "Remember When". It has been awhile since I read that book, which tells of a daring jewelry heist that happened in the year 2004 (or somewhen along those lines) and how it relates to the daughter of one of the thieves living a clean life running an antique shop, who happened to have fallen in love with the jewelry company's investigator. Big Jack is a continuation of Nora Robert’s Hot Rocks written in 2003. Though I read Hot Rocks, I don’t remember the storyline but was able to follow the Big Jack story.
Big Jack is a great read because I’m vested in Eve Dallas and Rourke because I like the psychology of the stories. Eva Dallas and her husband Rourke were both brutally physically and emotionally abused as children. Rourke became a criminal while Eve because a cop. They met at a funeral and fell in love.

When I finished Hot Rocks and saw there was a "sequel" I was really excited. However, I was bummed that it was part of the JD Robb Eve Dallas series and that E.D. was the main character, not the granddaughter of the characters from the previous book. I think it would have been a whole lot more interesting if it would have been written from that point of view w/ a romance thrown in. That being said, I can see the draw of writing it this way. BIG JACK is the sequel to HOT ROCKS (which I read a few weeks ago) and takes place about fifty years after the first book concludes. N.B. both these stories appeared together in a previous publication titled ‘Remember When’ and a few fans seem to be a little put out by this, as I had not read that book then these two separate stories were not a problem for me.

Here comes Lieutenant Eve Dallas again. As you can see these stories don't need to be read in order. The background lives of the characters is just that 'background' and is not really necessary to carry the storyline along. The murder and it's resolution is what carries the tale along. I picked this book up wondering what J D Robb was writing about without reading the jacket. In my opinion, all J.D. Robb books are probably 4 stars, Big Jack for sure. Altho Robb's writing style never changes, and all her characters have the same speech patterns, all her stories keep me interested thru the entire book. Let me start by agreeing with those who are peeved that this novel is actually a reprint of half of the previously published, "Remember When." Like many fans, I hate the Nora Roberts republishes old books under new titles. It's a deceitful marketing tactic, and if I paid for s book I had already read, I would be PISSED. That being said, I had not read this novel, and I enjoyed the first half of it, "Hot Rocks." I don't think this continuation of the story is quite as engaging...more
This is the sequel to Nora Roberts' Hot Rocks. She wrote it under her Nora Roberts name and then this one as JD Robb. Not sure why. I liked this book even though, when I first started reading it I thought I wouldn't. It's set in the year 2059 and I'm not usually into futuristic stories. Since it was the continuation of Hot Rocks I persevered and I'm glad I did. There's no redeeming value to either of these novels. Just escapism which is fine with me!
I really enjoyed this installment in the Eve Dallas series. She really gets into this investigation looking for a killer and the diamonds that he is looking for at the same time. I liked having Peabody as a detective and Eve's partner...she kept inserting the fact that she was now a detective into the conversation which was really cute. Look forward to the next book in this series later this year.

We are again in the future with this J.D. Robb (Pseudonym) book. As NYC Detective Eve Dallas is trying to find who killed two young women the back story is of a huge diamond heist in the past. Are they related? Dallas is thinking so. I like reading these books with their futuristic touches.

I didn't read the accompying Nora Roberts story (they were originally published together in "Remember When") because I didn't realize that the two stories were linked. Oh well, I think I understood the story well enough...

This is another book in the "In Death" series written by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) I happened upon it by accident and glad I did. I've thoroughly enjoyed this series, seriously because it's the same characters book after book and a lot of the same ideas. But they are a good, not too serious read.

Eve Dallas, a New York City policewoman has a murder to solve. The story takes place in 2059 so there are some advancements in technology that are useful to the police in solving their cases. A 50 year old diamond heist figures in the case and is the clue that solves it.
Hands down one of the stupidest, transparently sexist novels I have ever read. Lame fakey "futuristic" details & "empowered women" supported by traditional romance novel heroes (and not in a self-aware romance-novel manner) = unenjoyable and demeaning to my intelligence.
Somehow skipped this one in the line up of "In Death" books. Funny to read about Peabody finding her true-detective self in this book when I'm used to her now. I love Peabody! Then again Dallas and Roarke are funny in their second year of marriage. They are still learning the ropes of give and take in this one and Dallas isn't always sure that Roarke is still this side of the law.

I read this book as part of Remember When. It was a nice re-read. I could really see the character developement between this book and the new ones.

Meh, it was a good pick while stuck at the Maui airport. I like mysteries, but I really like the ones with more likable protagonists - Dallas is too troubled and serious for me. Janet Evanovich can be a rote, but I'll stick to her Stephanie Plum series.
Not bad as a stand alone book, but meant to be the sequel to "Hot Rocks". This one takes place in the future, but not so far that it reads like a sci-fi story - it's only 2059. A little predictable, but a quick read to fill some time.
I love the parts about Peabody trying to grow into who she is. The mystery was decent. I didn't read the other portion of the book that is referenced (Hot Rocks). I'll get around to it, but will give it a break between them.

I really enjoyed this one. The older case was really interesting to me, and I am excited to read Hot Rocks to get all the details about it. I really like the idea that you can read the book that caused all the commotion in this book.
Though I Love Nora Roberts, I have never read a JD Robb book, but this is a continuation of "Hot Rocks" and I liked the first chapter that was included in the back of "Hot Rocks" so I thought I would give it a try!
I read this in it's original name of Remember When. I liked this book under the original name and the name change didn't change my opinion of it - I just eneded up with a copy of the book under both names.
I enjoyed the book but the title is a huge misnomer. Big Jack is perhaps mentioned once or twice. This really is a book about Detective Dallas and her figuring out the heist and new crimes attached to it. The Gannon family were only really guest appearances at best and I expected more from a book that was a tie in.
Half way in I recalled I had already read this one. It is still a good read. I read the Dallas series for pure escapism; and because I feel I know the characters so well.
As usual J.D.Robb (Nora Roberts) has done it again. How Eve, Peabody, McNab, Feeney and of course Roarke all work together is great. How they go about putting the case together - linking the murders of Tina and Andrea and finding the killer is fascinating. Will look forward to reading more of J.D. Robb's books in the future. Good mystery for anyone who enjoys reading a thriller
Big Jack was a great break from the normal Lt. Dallas and Peabody books... a great way to combine Nora Roberts and JD Robb. Big Jack could be a series all his own.
