I really liked this book. However, I found it difficult to connect with the characters until I was almost 3/4 way through the book, and then I just liked them.I was a little put off by the timing of the sex scenes, and because of this I didn't get that warm tingly feeling!! LOL. (The scenes were well written.)I also felt that Luke was lacking a little, *ducks* I mean he manned up when it came to the bedroom, but he didn't really do much until then. I might give this another chance at some point, but it's missing something. And there is so much backstory that we need to believe to get into the story, I think the author needed to cut down some of the memory sequences and past stories. Instead she should have focused with more depth on the connection between them early on, and left her past secret as the puzzle we put together.
The characters need more depth and fleshing out before I can care about them or their love lives...

Let me preface my review by saying that I tend to grade tougher on romantic suspense, because it is one of my favorite genres and I have a really high bar.

If I could have given it 31/2 stars I would have. Overall I liked Ms. Eden's book. I thought that the storyline was solid and I felt Monica and Luke's romance eventually. It took me awhile to warm to their romance.

Ms. Eden does write more sexier, edgier love scenes (they were all kind of fast and furious.) than what you normally see in a Kar...more

Books like 'Deadly Fear' are why Cynthia Eden is one of my favorite authors. Her writing style always feels new and special. I feel her books are a treat because she has unbelievable skills at storytelling. Deadly Fear is a fast-paced thrill ride, and this reader could not help herself from finishing it late into the night (On a work night!).

I loved Monica Davenport, the main heroine in this story. The things she's endured made me sob. She was kidnapped and tortured, and lost her family, but somehow finds the strength to survive, and fight back as a FBI special agent. It was just thrilling to read about how she does her job, how she fights back in her own way, and how she finally falls in love with Luke, another special agent who is just the perfect person for her. He's the opposite of her in so many ways, because he puts the victims at ease, but understands the perspective of the killers and crazies.

Monica and Luke are forced to work together in the same division when a serial killer is on the loose. This case is special in that the killer targets victims and always eludes the authorities. Unfortunately, the killer takes a particular interest in Monica, almost taunting her. It is unnerving because the serial killer who previously held Monica captive was caught--right? The story is suspenseful as the plot thickens. Meanwhile, Luke has also taken a special interest in Monica--he wants to protect her, despite the fact that he has no clue what happened to her in the past. When he does find out, he is the one who is finally able to heal Monica. Their partnership is absolutely enduring to read about and watching them fight their attraction was amusing and fun.

I normally am not a fan of thrillers because the thought of an unhappy ending is too much for me. However, I liked how Cynthia Eden really made them fight to achieve their happy ending, with many twists and turns--yes, even though the twist and turns were absolutely violent and sickening to read about. It made reading the last 5 pages especially meaningful when Luke and Monica have nothing to fear as long as they are together.

This was a suspenseful read that fans of mystery and romance will certainly thrill to read.

Deadly Fear is one of the best (if not the best) romantic-suspense novels I have ever read, hands down!

The new FBI devision, SSD, works solely on serial-killer crimes and when a new killer is on the loose agents Monica Davenport and Luke Dante have to team up to prevent the "the Watchmam" from choosing his next victim. But the killer is always one step ahead of them and when Monica herself is asked "what scares you?" it seems they know exactly who the next victim is supposed to be!

Now why not a 5 star read? Well, I couldn't help comparing in to a Karen Rose book (who I consider the undisputed queen of the diabolical, psycho crazy character), and I thought this serial killer (who tortured his victims with their greatest fears) came up a little short. Not to say that what he did wasn't sickening, scary, and demented, but I didn't feel as scared and horrified as I expected. Maybe it's because the author didn't get into the minds of the victims as much as KR does--we were largely told what happened to them, we didn't see it happen (except for one case) and get into the minds of the victims when it did. We didn't get to experience their horror and fear. The one time that we did, I thought "yes, this is how it should be written" and I could feel this character's fear. So I think this story fell just a wee bit short for me in the fear factor.

If it fell short in the fear factor, it certainly made up for it in the romance department. I loved the relationship between the uber smart, beautiful FBI profiler Monica Davenport (who had her own secrets and fears) and her love interest, FBI agent Lucas Dante. I loved how the protective Lucas was able to get past the icy walls that the alpha Monica had surrounding her heart, her feelings, and her whole life. Their sex scenes were scrumptious. Lucas was to die for. My only complaint (or should I say wish) was that I would've liked to have seen some scenes (maybe some flashbacks) about when they met at the Academy at Quantico. We were told a bit about their past, but I would've preferred some actual scenes complete with dialogue, just so I could get a better feel for their realtionship. I think it would've helped me to better connect with the characters. As it was written, I really didn't emotionally connect with them until I was over halfway through the book, when the author started to reveal more bits and pieces about the characters' backgrounds.

This was an excellent start to a new series, with a real nail-biter ending, and the last 100 pages were un-put-downable! I enjoyed meeting all the supporting characters, and look forward to fellow agent Kenton Lake's story (Deadly Heat), and especially agent Samantha's story (Deadly Lies). If you like a romantic suspense in the style of Karen Rose, but with more romance, give this series a shot. 4 stars

I had high expectations when Larissa Ione/Demonica Series slaps a quote on the front of Deadly Fear's cover: "I dare you to not love a Cynthia Eden Book!" I don't know where I've been that I have not picked one of Ms. Eden's books before but "stop the press." If her other books are anything like the quality of Deadly Fear, I am running out to by them! What an action packed, high suspense, hot, read! This is the beginning of a new series for Ms.Eden and I am already biting my lip raw for the next installment!

If you enjoy psychological thrillers like Silence of the Lambs mixed with a badass heroine that is as hot in bed as she is on a killer's trail, Deadly Fear is one crime you don't want to miss!

My first by this author and I enjoyed it. Nicely written, great characters, excellent suspense and a really bad character=great entertainment. I thought the author did a superb job of including romance in this "romantic suspense."

Monica Davenport and Luke Dante met in FBI training several years earlier and had a hot and heavy "fling." Both lugged around dark secrets from their pasts and were not willing to share.

This was an interesting book. I loved the action and the plot. The mystery was in depth and full of twists and turns. I didn’t see the end coming, and I was a little surprised by who the killer was. I had my eye on two different people for the fear induced murders, but I was wrong. I was intrigued and full of anxiety for the people involved. Ooh, ooh, ooh I loved this book!! There is nothing better in my book than a really well-written romantic suspense book, especially ones with tortured heroines and tormented heroes. This book had it all!

I'm not usually fond of the reunited/second chances theme, but this one was done right, where neither of the parties involved did something really unforgivable that they had to work through. Deadly Fear is pure sexual tension and simply riveting. Most Cynthia Eden fans are into her paranormal romances- don't skip out on this just because it skips the paranormal! SUCH a great book. This brilliant romantic suspense sucked me into the story instantly.

What becomes of a person when we have been through the worst of times and pushed further than you ever could have anticipated while still a child? The downside of Monica’s expertise is that she has walls built up so high and thick around her heart that it has turned her to ice. But leave it to Luke Dante, one handsome; alpha male to knock those walls down and step right over them showing that he is as determined to be with Monica and she is to keep him out. Game On!

Luke is a Special Agent with the FBI as well who already knows how amazing Monica is from when they met during their academy days. He has experienced her on an intimate level and now they are reunited to work on with an elite team of agents who do nothing but hunt down serial killers until the murderer is caught. Being back together with her Luke has both his head and body screaming for him to use any means available to get her back in his life on a personal level as much as a professional one.

Their first assignment together is horrific and has all the signs of an out of control serial killer who is torturing and brutalizing young women. Both Luke and Monica have to fight off their demons that still lurk in the night to scare them and for Monica déjà vu sets in as this case mirrors another that she was personally involved in and may interfere with her ability to keep her head clear. Luke knows that he can work with Monica and hopes that he is finally able to break down her barriers and warm her heart and help her turn the lights off when the night has come.

Luke is also determined to protect Monica regardless of her protesting when the killer marks her as a target and preys on her fear. All bets are off on what Luke will do to find this maniac and make sure one way or another the perp is gone forever.

The discovery of love not just lust and passion between Luke and Monica is a hard traveled road but one worth the ride as they realize that together they are a formidable team in and out of bed. But there is so much past that each of them has lived through and both are working out the demons and making sure that what scares them they are able to conquer and ensure that it does not kill them.

The most pleasurable yet difficult journey a reader takes is one where you actually feel the emotions and pain the characters are experiencing along with her fear. It is great authors that can have the reader feel as if they are literally walking in the character’s footsteps and taste the same terror as the character. Ms. Eden has done just that with this book and knows that the scary parts are offset with the tenderness and emotion from Luke and Monica. Cynthia Eden writes excellent and edgy paranormal romance with a twist of suspense and in Deadly Fear, she's left off the paranormal and stuck with the full-on romantic suspense. The plot may not be the most original I've ever read, but it's well developed and told with Eden's flair for intense emotional impact. The danger is visceral and the small victories and failures of the agents as they race towards catching the killer are many and varied and add nice depth and complexity. I did have some issues, though. There just wasn't a whole lot of surprise to the suspense and the 'big picture,' once revealed, seemed a little cliched, but it was well told, quickly paced, and thorough.

I can't say I was as pleased with the romance between Luke and Monica, though. I had a very hard time warming up to Monica, and though I completely understand her motivations and the reasons she is the way she is, understanding doesn't make her any more likable in the beginning. I liked Luke, but then I haven't met an Eden alpha male that I haven't liked, so that wasn't surprising. His character wasn't as well developed as I would have liked, though. There just wasn't a whole lot to his character that went deeper than or beyond his feelings for Monica, and that made their relationship seem sort of two dimensional and it was too quick to develop (or re-develop) for my personal tastes.

Eden wrote the pair with the same searing sensuality that she has made a staple in her paranormal romances, but without that paranormal aspect to add layers, the intensity and impetus behind the whole relationship seemed more to be solely based on lust and sexual chemistry and less on trust and compatibility. That lent the relationship a lot of sexual power, but not a lot of the subtler, more slowly enticing aspects of romantic relationship development.

I do think there was a bit of a ball drop with another aspect of Dante's character definition, too. He is touted as being fantastic with victims, but he isn't really given an opportunity for that personality trait to be shown or explored, and I wish it had because it would have balanced nicely with Monica's ability to profile monsters. That was one of the points that drew me to the story from reading the description, and it was sadly underdeveloped.

I wasn't as pleased with Deadly Fear as I was hoping I was going to be, but I'm a huge Eden fan and will give the second book in this series, Deadly Heat, a chance when it comes out in February 2011. Romantic suspense is a genre I'm fond of and I'm interested in seeing where some of the characters we met here are going in their development.

Luke wants Monica like no other woman he has ever known. Getting her to let him into her world….and her secrets…is one job he will gladly take. When the serial killer starts targeting them, they must work together…or let their own fears kill them.

Love this book so much! The twists. The turns. The sex, YUMMY. Monica and Luke jump right off the page at you. The way Luke quietly breaks down Monica’s walls is just so heartfelt…so right. Luke is the total package. Smart, funny, sexy and he will kill anyone that lays a hand on his woman. Even if she is quite capable of taking care of herself.

The rest of the characters are well wrote and play a integral part to the plot of the book. Kenton and Samantha will each get their own books in the following installments.

I will admit though that I locked my back door a little earlier then I normally do last night when I was reading. Vampires, werewolves and demons may go bump in the night…but that aren’t real. Serial killers are very real. And very scary. The thought of someone using my worst fears against me…I shudder every time. I won’t even tell you my fears, never know who is reading now do we?(less)

I liked this book. It was so suspenseful. The romance part of the story was good, but I really like suspense. It's so intriguing to me.

This one was one I really connected with. Given that everyone has fears I think this one was able to really get to me. While I was reading I kept thinking about the things that I'm scared of. I could almost feel the fear that the victims were feeling when they realized what was happening to them. It gave me chills quite a few times.

When I was given the opportunity to review Deadly Fear I jumped on it. I have read almost all of Cynthia Eden's work and I have yet to find one that I haven't enjoyed. Cynthia is a very talented author.

Oh man, this book was awesome! The language was pretty rough and I could have gotten along without much of it but it didn't detract from the story. In some cases it added a dose of reality to the scene.

I know some people read books for the sex scenes but I don't. I love a good romance but there's a big difference between romance and sex. I love watching crime shows. I think I watch all of them. I always figure out who the criminal is early on. I DID NOT figure out the who done it with this one. This is a great start to what I believe will be a remarkable series. I am looking forward to reading more of the Deadly books.

Honestly, the characters didn't grab me with this one. I am usually a big fan of the whole lovers-reunite theme but I wasn't feeling the chemistry between these two. There was something off. I am over 1/4 in and I'm not invested yet which is suprising since this book was so highly rated. I'm putting it aside for now and may come back to it eventually. The entire story revolves around that simple question. What scares me is that I don't share the majority of the reviewer's enthusiasm for this story. Okay, so I'm not scared, just baffled. I didn't connect to the characters (except perhaps lust after SA Luke Dante). Is it just me or did the writing style at the beginning sound clipped? Loved Deadly Fear. This was a very suspenseful/mystery romance novel. I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced, action packed and hard to put down.
