After reading Lacey's GoodReads review, I picked it up and was prepared to be totally heartbroken. I might have even been looking forward to it, because I am a Canadian and that's how we are. After reading Lacey's GoodReads review, I picked it up and was prepared to be totally heartbroken. I might have even been looking forward to it, because I am a Canadian and that's how we are. Or at least that is how I am. I like a good heartbreaking story (it's usually the happy ones that freak me out).

Anyway, as much as I thought I was prepared for this book, I totally wasn't. It doesn't just break your heart--that's putting it too mildly--this book will rip your heart out of your chest and then dry ice it and then smash it into smithereens and then direct you to the cupboard where the glue is so you can then begin the process of pasting the pieces of your old heart into a NEW heart.

The good news: it's so worth it.

I Know It's Over is a book about a teenage guy named Nick and his intense, all-consuming relationship with a girl named Sasha. The two are so full of each other they can hardly breathe. When they break up, Sasha citing a need for space, Nick is devastated. It's not what he wants and he struggles to understand how it's something she could. And then Sasha comes back--not to tell Nick she wants to get back together... but to tell him she's pregnant. Together but not, they must figure out what to do, how to cope and how to continue after the decision is made.

This is one YA novel that really impressed me (and also gave me chest pains with its amazingness, as mentioned above). It tackles some big issues--teen pregnancy, sex, sexuality--but never once feels like an Issue Book. I mean, Degrassi is fun to watch, but it wouldn't be that fun to read (unless it's a Degrassi book--we all know that'd be awesome). Martin never once goes for a melodramatic or heavy-handed approach, nor does she have an agenda, which is sure to make people on either side of the fence mad.

Nick is one of the most memorable male protagonists I've read in a long time. His observations are candid and devastating. He's a frustrated, 16-year-old guy, struggling with his own perceptions of himself and other people's perceptions of him. Martin drives home the fact that it's tough just to be a teenager, let alone one that is about to go through the things that Nick goes through. Martin is also excellent at taking down walls between characters, both major and minor ones, and the reader. If you don't know these people, you will know them. I think that familiarity is especially important, considering the book's subject matter.

The writing is frank, brutal, beautiful and emotionally confrontational. I'm sure it'll force people to ask questions they don't want to ask. After reading I Know It's Over, I'm convinced there's nothing Martin won't say and that's good. That's what I want on my YA shelf. That's what I want on EVERY YA shelf.(less)

I came into this book with high expectations. Having read excerpts of Martin's other novels, I could tell that I'd enjoy her books. I've been dying to read, The Lighter Side of Life and Death. As I was unable to find a copy of it, I decided to settle for I Know It's Over.

It's not the situation that is entirely awkward for me, especially since I was intrigued by the idea of a novel about an unexpected pregnancy and following abortion from the male teen's point-of-view. But Nick's summer plans of carefree go out the window when Sasha shows up. She's been going to school with him for as long as he can remember. They've just never really talked to each other. One day they do, and suddenly something starts. Sasha is totally different than Dani and isn't about to do anything sexual quite so fast. But Nick and Sasha start getting hot and heavy by the time fall rolls around. And then Sasha breaks it off, saying that she wants to be able to concentrate on school and getting into the best college. Nick is crushed, but there's not much he can do.

Then, on Christmas Eve, Sasha shows up out of nowhere and tells Nick that she's pregnant. Sure, they were always careful and used protection, but one time something happened. Neither one of them thought much about it at the time, but now they're over-analyzing the night. Sasha is hesitant about her decision regarding the baby. After she tells her parents, she decides on an abortion, and doesn't really let Nick have much say. Nick, being so mixed up about the whole situation, really wishes Sasha would talk to him more and let him be involved. But the truth is that they could never really have a relationship again, even with the baby.

With the help of his gay best friend (Nathan) and his other best friend (Keelor), Nick manages to make it through this whole fiasco. But will he ever have another chance with Sasha? And what will Sasha's final choice about the baby be?

First off, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone under the age of seventeen due to the sexual scenes and the topic of pregnancy and all. That said, though, this was such a great read. I loved how it was told from the guy's point of view, which we hardly ever get to see. I felt so bad for Nick from the very beginning. Of course, my heart went out to Sasha, as well.

C.K. Kelly Martin is such a strong writer and this was an amazing book. Her words just jumped off the page to me. I loved Nick's attitude and actions, along with Sasha's. And Nick's younger 14-going-on-30 sister was great. Basically, I loved everything about this book except for the ending. It was okay; I just kind of wanted it to end differently!

But anyway, definitely pick up a copy of this book when it's released. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. And I really hope the author writes another book soon!

Interesting and heartbreaking book. I don't like love stories but this is not exactly a love story, this is something more. The first part is love story but not in a sugary way, and the second part of the book is really sad story.The dead-lock in which the characters are is so dramatic and fascinated. The book is really authentic and I think that this is some kind of charm.
This is one teen love story which can teach you, which can make you sad or happy, which can touch you heart.

To say that I was dissapointed by this book is putting it mildly. It started out with Sasha annoucing to Nick that she's pregnant ... As was go through their relationship through the eyes of Nick I kept thinking and wondering if Sasha was playing a cat and mouse game with him ... She was in, she was out, she didn't seem to know what she wanted and he couldn't seem to figure out that she was probably going to end up breaking his heart in the end.

What I really like is getting to see it from a boys pov and the things he went through. I like the way Ms. Martin showed the emotions. Not only the emotionally toll of the relationship but also the psychical toll as well. Nick does his best when it comes to supporting his ex-girlfriends and I admire him for that. This book tackles sex, pregnancy, and abortion head on, but it is essentially a story of the end of a relationship told from the point of view of sixteen year old Nick Severson. Nick, a popular and good looking high school hockey player, finds himself completely shaken by the news that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant. Even though it seems like a love story at first, it quickly becomes something deeper when the characters struggle both physically and emotionally through the life-changing consequences of an unexpected pregnancy.
* Except for a few minor characters, most characters are fleshed out and realistic, allowing you to dive into their psyche, and to feel them next to you.
* The end is completely plausible and satisfying. Any other ending would have felt forced and unnatural.
There is more to this book than sex and pregnancy--it also deals with divorce, growing up, friendship, homosexuality, and guilt.

What didn't work:
* The first half of the book is a big flashback. It can be tedious, until you begin to relate to the characters.
* Nick seemed to be more affected by the situation than Sasha. That is NOT likely to happen. Ever.
* The last quarter of the book goes too fast, with an also rushed, and somewhat forced, decision.

Opinion:
A strong story with an also strong conclusion. There is just no other way I could picture a story like this ending. I wished it were different, but it's not. Every action has a consequence, and no matter how careful you are, accidents do happen. Your life can change over the night and leave you spiraling out of control, especially if you are a teen. It is a very complex book in which we are told that teens don't think. Period. They think they think, but they don't. Not until an accident happens and they are forced to think.

The male PoV is a very refreshing way to see an unexpected pregnancy. We are often told how it can change the life of the young girl, and we usually forget that the whole situation can be just as stressful and life changing for the boy. The difference is that who takes the decision in the end is the girl with little to no impact from what the boy actually wants. Still, we are left with the notion of how much of an emotional scar the decision can have upon a young female. The thing is, teenage pregnancy has a strong emotional and physical impact both in the couple--or ex-couple-- and their friends and families.

I'm giving this book 3.5/5 stars because it left me staring at the night thinking after I closed it. I can't say I loved this book. It is a very strong subject with somewhat descriptive sex scenes that are not for all tastes. However, I did enjoy this book and I fully recommend it if you like the kind of books that leave you with a bittersweet taste at the end. This book is definitely not a page turner, but a life turner.

What I liked about this book was the digging into the adolescent psyche. It's pretty strong stuff. A lot of scenes relating to sex in this book. The overall theme, which you would hope teens would get, is that casual sex is not a good idea, that even the most well-intended kids slip up, and then there's a price to pay.

But, the kicker is that Martin shows you so well how teenagers just don't think, period, that you wonder if the message would get through. that's part of the complexity.

I think the portrayal of a certain portion of the teenage world was pretty accurate, and teens involved in that world just would not normally recognize that what they are doing is pretty immature. Most of the teens in this book make a huge distinction between a full sexual encounter, and fooling around naked with each other, or other sexual acts that aren't THE ACT. This confirms what a lot of articles say, that teens don't think it's sex unless it's THE ACT, that anything BUT THE ACT is OK, when in fact there's much esteem and relationship damage involved in that kind of thinking. So, perhaps laid out in black and white, one or two might see their world for the folly that it is.

The 16 year old Nick is torn up by the situation. Sarah, the girl, is just swept up the whole mess, and lets her mother handle it. Nick is the more mature of the two, not that either of them is mature.
Another complex part of the tale is the reality that a lot of kids won't go to their parents (even good parents) with the situation, when that should be their first stop. I also found the portrayal of the decision making process Sarah goes through as pretty accurate: very little real counseling, mother takes charge and basically decides for her, adoption is not considered or mentioned, the boy is left out of the picture. This is unfortunate and would make for a good discussion amongst teens, whether how it played out was right for all parties involved.

There's enough here to make a reader think. There's also enough for some to be squeamish about the story, or about letting teens read it. But I think for high school kids it might hit some nerves. And parents might learn a few teenage tricks - like how they tell the parents they are staying at the girlfriend's house overnight, but really are at the unsupervised free for all party several blocks over. Makes you want to run right out and put instant GPS on the kid's cellphone with alerts to your computer. ;-)

One thing I thought of as I read. The average age for marriage is now around 26. Sexual urges kick into high gear around 15 or so. So basically kids are being asked to control those urges for 9-10 years, if we ascribe to the notion that sex should stay within marriage. 30-50 years ago, they were only being asked to control them 3-5 years. Big difference. This begs the question - how do we help kids navigate this minefield? This book shows that they are trying to do it on their own, and not doing a very good job of it at that. And how would teens answers that question?

I Know It’s Over deals honestly and threaded carefully in the reality of the problems of today’s teens: sex, divorce, teen pregnancy, sexuality, relationships, drugs and abortion. I like how C.K. Kelly Martin described Sasha and Nick’s first time – it wasn’t sugar coated with pleasure and nice feelings, instead it was awkward and uncomfortable for the both of them. It made them feel weird and uneasy after.

Sasha’s decision was a surprise – I don’t think it was the right one but the author rationalized it perfectly that you’d see the point she was making. She was selfish, in a way. But it was her life, she is going to live with the decision she will make for the rest of her life. It was a reality slap that a baby – although a blessing, it is also a responsibility. A responsibility that will by faced by two sixteen years old who are currently in school. Can they do it? Are they both of them ready to become good parents?

While other boys at the prime of their teens would run the opposite direction, Nick, stood firm in his ground and expressed his willingness to be a part of the pregnancy. This is one thing I admire most about him. I loved the way he love Sasha, it was raw, real, and intense but not to the point of obsession. He still wants her back, but somehow he was trying to grasp the fact that nothing is going to be the same again and that he needs to move on with life as well. He was a kind friend, being there for Nathan who was as confused as he is for a very different reason. There was Jillian, who was as problematic as him and wanted a distraction. She was a great listener for someone who is desperate to share his emotions.

I Know It’s Over’s ending was pretty amazing – it made my heart ache. It wasn’t the expected happily ever after – but you will forgive C.K. Kelly Martin because it was beautifully written that it’ll touch you.

"I Know It's Over" is about sixteen year old Nicholas' relationship with Sasha and how they deal with a pregnancy and the pressures of family and friends. One would expect this novel to be heavily based around pregnancy but it's not. It deals with sex, homosexuality, divorce, growing up and friendship. "I Know It's Over" is one of the most realistic and heart wrenching young adult novels I ever read and Martin made sure that all the character were as real as possible.

I wanted to scream the entire time about how selfish the characters were and how idiotic their parents are. I Know It’s Over is a book with deep and interesting concepts, sex and homosexuality. Sex and homosexuality is one of many things that some teens go through.

I haven’t read a book where you are reading in the male’s perspective when it comes down to sex and pregnancy. Typically, sex and pregnancy are in a female’s point of view, but not in I Know It’s Over.

I've read other books with a male POV and most of them come across as having very similiar thought processes as girls, which I don't think is true. This book you could tell it's the way a guy thinks.

I very much enjoyed this book. It was so raw while being perfectly simple and straightforward at the same time. It screams pure honesty. Most books I read are young adult novels which means authors and publishers cater towards teenage girls and write from the perspective of a female. I Know It’s Over by C.K. Kelly Martin is a moving young adult drama that reveals some of the complications, choices and consequences that result from an unwanted, unplanned teen pregnancy.

I immensely enjoyed this novel, and the only reason I didn’t rate it higher was because it wasn’t a novel I would want to re-read. When I rate a book 4 or 5 STARS it means I loved it so much I would want to revisit it down the road. While I am grateful for the experience of reading this novel, I wouldn’t ever feel compelled to read it again.

I Know It’s Over stood out from other young adult novels. For one thing, it’s told from a male’s point of view. The majority of the novels I read are told from the female’s perspective, if not solely than mainly. Reading from Nick’s perspective was realistic and fascinating.

Martin gives you a front-row seat to Nick’s thoughts and emotions. And let me tell you, his emotions are all over the place. At the start of this novel, Nick is single and casually “hooking up” with Dani. His unfiltered thoughts and carefree actions were just like your stereotypical 16-year-old boy. He was almost desperate at times, always taking whatever he could get from Dani, and not interested in a monogamous relationship. Are all teenage boys like Nick? No, but I would guess there are a lot like him out there.

When Nick and Sasha start hanging out, it’s one emotion after another: pleasure, happiness, anger, betrayal, sadness, frustration, etc. The relationship between Nick and Sasha is true-to-life; it’s not a fairy tale. I really appreciate the way Martin portrayed their first time together. She kept things real.

This book has a lot of great characters, especially Nick and Nathan, Nick’s best friend who is struggling with his sexuality. I was not, however, a huge fan of Sasha and Keelor, Nick’s other best friend. For the life of me, I couldn’t understand what Nick saw in Sasha. Even his memories from the beginning of their relationship paint her poorly. She came across as sort of bitchy, sort of judgmental, and extremely selfish. She breaks up with Nick with a stupid, selfish reason. She ignores him and shuts him out. She also doesn’t really include Nick in any of the decision-making. I am all for female power, but Sasha never considers Nick’s feelings or opinions. That made her selfish.

I gave I Know It’s Over by C.K. Kelly Martin 3 STARS (3.5 STARS). I recommend this novel to all young adults. If you are looking for a happy, feel-good book then this probably isn’t the book for you. It’s not a complete downer, but it’s a realistic take on teen pregnancy…so it’s not a fairy tale.

I just read a book called "I Know It's Over" by C.K. Kelly Martin,published on September 23rd 2008. Now i cant tell the hole story so you have to read the book to find out the rest. The author also has you thinking because she talks about two things at an time in some parts of the story. I really like how she organized the book because it was easy for me to stop when i had to. Not only that, but it helped me to understand the book better by where she stopped the chapter. This book tells the lives of most teens today. This book I think is very compelling seeing how it's telling the truth about life with most people. What I thought made this book so wonderful is that, the author really knew what she wanted the reader to feel. I really like this book because I was on the edge of my seat during every chapter, which just made me want to keep reading because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Also I think it's somewhat like a manual for teenagers in this day and age. This book just tells that things can always happen no matter what you think or do. I learned so much from this book. If you read it you will understand. But I really think that all teens should read this book and realize that things can happen and there will be a time where it could hurt them and maybe even the people they are close to. Maybe even change their life. This book is a wonderful read because you will always be on the edge of your seat and you will even be shocked about some things that happen. I know for a fact that anyone who reads this book will have a personal connection. So to me this book was a good read, and I think that many will agree.(less)

Wow. Um...wow?
So...I have no idea where to begin...
I Know It's Over is on a guy's point of view so a lot of it is pretty perverted. So this books is for teens that are a bit more mature.
This book goes into detail about what it is like for the GUY when his girlfriend gets pregnant at a young age. Usually books like these are on the girl's point of view, so it's really interesting to finally read a book on the guy's point of view. Everything is so different.

This kind of book is like the title "I Know It's Over", very literal and not happy

To me, Nick seems like a great guy, never cheating and not stuck up. He was the perfect image of what a good boyfriend was, supportive. Sometimes, I was totally frustrated at Sasha, for needing a break for not being able to stay strong for Nick, but I guess that was a weakness I always had for the main character. My heart is still aching for Sasha and Nick.

I Know It's Over is such a wonderful honest tale of teenage pregnancy. yet it never screems Teenage Public Service announcement

I loved that the POV came from Nick. At times I wanted Sasha's POV but overall I think the dialouge driven book does well capturing her feelings as well.

I appreciate what the author was trying to do with this book but, for me, it was kind of meandering and, quite honestly, just poorly written. There was way too much reliance on dialogue and not enough actual writing and character development. Nick and Sasha and the rest of the supporting cast felt flat. The story was purely plot-driven and I thought it lacked the entire emotional side of teen pregnancy.
