As Quill introduced me to new names for birds, I remembered something I'd learned years ago through reading haiku: the robin isn't beautiful because it's a herald of spring, it's beautiful because it's a robin. Like haiku, Quill's poems observe without attempting to move into the realm of the symbolic or the sublime. When I stopped expecting poems laden with meaning, I enjoyed these poems for what they were: brief glimpses into the lives of birds, of plants, of places.
