VEIL OF SHADOWS, by Shiloh Walker, is the romantic and action-packed second book in the Veil series. After reading, Through the Veil, I was very interested in continuing the story of this new world that Walker created. With the addition of new characters, I was hooked again.

After reading the first book in this series, I knew I had to read this book. I begged, I pleaded and I entered the contest from the author and I won an ARC of this book for review. I jumped into reading this book and didn't want to let go of it!

I loved it! Once again Shiloh creates true to life characters with depth. This follow up to Through the Veil kept the existing characters in the plot (nice) and expanded as well as brought in several new ones.

Sin (a witch)is the captain of the rebel army fighting to free the last demon infested area of their world. The civilians are being sent east where it is safe and all warriors that wish join the army to fight the demons and Warlords who were trapped when Lee crushed the last gate. Xan exude...more

I had to struggle a bit with this book - something I don't usually do with S.W. books. I think the struggle had less to do with the book itself, and more to do with my having not read the first book in the series. I've done this before with other series written by the author, so I wasn't too concerned that I was skipping the first book (the library didn't have it). Veil of Shadows is the second book following her first story, Through the Veil. But this futuristic/apocalyptic series by Shiloh Walker is only getting better! Veil of Shadows can easily be read by itself but it does help having read the first book.

In this story a world ravaged by demons who hunt humans and evil invading Warlords is held on the edge by a small team of rebels. These rebels have finally closed the final gate where Warlords have used to raid and enter their world and raping and stealing woman with any power (witches) to reproduce their own kind. And these Warlords have killed anyone in their way. But the relief that Warlords can no longer enter into their world is short lived with the insurgence of an increasingly desperate and viscous demon population. The rebels can barely hold on and the constant flux of refugees does not make this position easier.

Syn is a witch and a Captain of the rebel forces. When she spies among the last of the refugees a powerful warrior she is intrigued but her work consumes her. But when Xan makes advances towards her she finally lets her passion and guard down. As Xan becomes an integral part of her team she realizes how much she comes to depend upon him and care about him. But danger lurks within their camp and from the stranded Warlords who still would like to capture a witch of their own. Syn has struggled all her life to be independent and live for her mother's memory. A memory of her mother being savagely taken from her by the raiding Warlords. When she discovers that Xan’s mother was also lost she feels it brings them closer. But nothing is ever simple and Xan has secrets and a hidden agenda that Syn may never be able to forgive.

I really enjoyed this book! I found the atmosphere of the war torn world compelling but never depressing. The rebels all felt like real characters and although there were many it only added to the story. The author skillfully balanced all the relationships between the characters and I felt they had history and were a real team. In fact, they all made me highly anticipate the next in the series.

This was a fast read. The chemistry between the 2 main characters was steamy and although a bit quick to start it felt believable. The story really revolves around the heroine and the hero while strong was more of a secondary character. But this made the story stronger for me since I felt the best thing about the book was the competent and likeable heroine.

I loved feeling I was in a totally different land with magic, a complex world and courageous characters. This is a series paranormal and futuristic fans MUST try. I highly recommend it and will be coming back for more!

I must say that Veil Of Shadows differs in action and suspense from its predecessor and focuses on the aftermath of various events. There is more than enough going on to keep my focus on the pages, from a betrayer bent on revenge to enemies hovering nearby and witches in search of new ways to tap in to Earths energy. I sometimes missed the thrill of excitement that comes along with the uncovering of a mystery yet it was replaced by a chase and the constant threats surrounding the camp which never allowed a dull moment in this story.

Because I recently read Through The Veil I remembered many of the recurring characters and loved the fact they were such an intricate part of telling this story. Shiloh Walker wouldn’t be Shiloh Walker though if the main couple didn’t immediately captured my attention. Xan and Syn together were a bump and grind of personalities and the sensual magnetism was palpable with every encounter. It is that passionate and romantic tension that is one of the things Shiloh Walker excels in and I revel in it as a reader. It is not only an attraction, pent up desires or a clash of erotic needs between the couple, it is all framed by every imaginable emotion giving the relationship development a depth that connects me to them. The romance was torturing good in its development and I gobbled up the dialogues that spoke of the fiery temperament present in many characters.

Xan is a sexy-as-hell warrior who is calm, focused but very intense. When I read the cover summary for the very first time I was incredible intrigued in the reasons for Xan being Syn’s greatest love or her greatest enemy. For the better part of the story that mystery was dormant and I wondered when I would get some clues whether there was something else going on then what appeared on the surface. I like being teased throughout the story that not all is what it seems to be and I did not get that this time with Xan’s character development. Of course I got my fill about two thirds in to the story and suddenly dots started to connect not only within VEIL OF SHADOWS but also another point of view to events from Through The Veil was given.

The bull’s eye was hit again with Syn as a leading female warrior. Syn is unafraid to speak her mind and driven in the cause for which she fights without becoming a cold hearted she-warrior. A far cry from it as she also sports a magical Achilles heel that makes her feel at a loss. She has strengths and weaknesses that gave me a heroine I could not only root for but understand so well in her fears and joys. The grim setting doesn’t leave much room for joy still she takes what she can get out of life and is unapologetic for it and all I could think was; Kudos to you Syn!

The step by step build up of the plot mostly revolved around the external threats and survival problems of everyone in the camp. Shiloh walker has a knack to draw you into her world via her vivid writing, it came alive for me in my mind and for a short time I joined the characters in their lives, loves and problems. They gave me a maelstrom of emotions to deal with; from sadness to the sharp-edged fear of danger and from romantic highs to erotic bliss. Xan and Syn may be the main story in their romance but its characters like Kalen and Lee or Morne and Elena who put a face on friendship, who lend a shoulder when you’re down and to share the joys and sorrows with. The conclusion in both plot and romance was ever so good but the question where Ishtar, the camp and its inhabitants are headed, that remains to be seen.

A well paced plot, a colorful cast of characters to care about and a romance to sink your teeth in, Shiloh Walker pens an exciting sequel with VEIL OF SHADOWS!

I'm a big fan of Ms Walker's, I have yet to read any of her work and not enjoy it or be swept away by her writing. Ms Walker writes brilliant story lines that keep you gripped and drag you in from the very first. I was first tempted to read Veil of Shadows because Ms Walker is an evil mastermind and tweeted excepts before it was released and I was instantly drawn and hooked, even though I wanted to read the first book I ended up by passing it to read Veil of Shadows first.

Although Veil of Shadows is the second book in the Veil series I had no trouble reading it as a stand alone as I hadn't read the first book. The story line is gripping and brilliantly written. I never once felt confused or annoyed about reading the second book in a series without reading the first book for background details or to know what the series was all about, which I think shows Ms Walkers writing skills. I'm not normally one for a kick ass heroine in a storyline who not only can look after herself and others but can also take down the hero without breaking into much of a sweat but Syn is that kind of heroine and she was brilliant! I was blown away by how much I liked her and was rooting for her right from the start.
Xan was brilliantly written too. He was everything a hero is meant to be and then had that extra little bit more just to blow Syn (and me!) away.
I really liked the main secondary characters too, Lee and Kalen (from the first book) and Morne and Elena they helped you see Syn as a woman, witch and as a solider which I really loved. They also were a great element to draw you into the rest of the series.
I adored the twist in the plot at the end! I really wasn't expecting it at all which made it all that more enjoyable and interesting. It was triple twisted and triple amazing!

Favourite Quote "The first time she saw the man, Laisyn Caar knew he was going to be trouble."

Hands down I thought this was a great book and would highly recommend it, I liked it so much I'm going to read the first book Through the Veil to catch up on what I've missed and to know more about Lee and Kalens relationship!(less)

Veil of Shadows is the second book in Walker's Veil series, which focuses on the world Ishtan, a realm sandwiched between Earth and the demon realm of Anqar. The Warlords of Anqar, a dying race, have been raiding Ishtan for female breeding stock for centuries, unleashing the native demons and monsters of Anqar on Istan, both on purpose and accident.

Walker's world building is absolutely killer in this book, hitting the perfect notes between character focus, showing readers the larger conflict of the land, yet not letting anything be black and white. This book's focus is on a small military outpost, nearly abandoned by the rest of the world who believes themselves to be safe now that the gates between worlds have fallen. But last book's heroes, Kalen, Elina, Lee and more, are still in the wilds of Ishtan fighting the pocket populations of demons, wyrms, not to mention the Warlords who were left behind when the gates fell. They stand between the recovering world and disaster and the recovering world is only too glad to pretend the threat is all over.

Enter Syn and Xan, two warriors in Kalen's army. Syn is his captain, a witch completely unsure of herself now the the Ishtan magic was shattered in the backlash of the gate's fall. Xan is a drifter, a battle-hardened warrior who signs on to Kalen's fight, but whose past is a mystery. While the romance between the two is an important part of the story it's not all of the story and there are frequent point of view breaks to display the larger story of Walker's world.

Also my complaints about the first book are completely invalid for this one. Syn is a more sympathetic character than Lee, and since she's native to both the fight and Ishtan she's more in tune to the world setting (and therefore her point of view contributes better to the world building) than Lee was. Also Walker doesn't shy away from conflicts and fight scenes in this book, while still making them not the most important part of the story.

The pacing is better, and the story fleshier, making Veil of Shadows a fabulous read. It will especially appeal to fans of Anne Bishop or fantasy readers who enjoy a touch of romance and a touch of darkness with their epic fantasy.(less)

This story is about a time after the earth has been visited by a race of creatures that look human, but are physically stronger, and poses powers associated with witches. People from earth have discovered a way to close the wormhole like entrance and fighting the creatures for freedom and to secure lost lands.

I feel as if I cannot recall the last time I liked the heroine so much. I think I've got a girl crush on Syn. I am just in awe at how competent she seemed, and how poised and well she handled the constant questioning of her authority. She was so confident. I want to be just like her when I grow up. lol. Also, despite her need for Xan, she did not let it get in the way of her job. They would schedule their personal time during their off-hours, and I respected that. This book and I had a bit of a rough start. Despite my picking this book randomly from the library (well, not quite. I had previously read the author, and the blurb sounded interesting), it took me several months, incurred late fines, and a couple of restarts to get past the first couple of chapters. Part of the reason was all these unfamiliar names and terminology. I've been reading romance for so long, I must have forgotten how to read fantasy, because the unfamiliar names and terminology which had once not bothered me, confused the heck out of me this time. I had no idea what the world was like, what was going on, what exactly the two factions were and who was with what faction. I guess it didn't help matters that I had not read the first book in this series. But I also appreciated the author not taking the easy way out with pages of infodumping. I eventually managed to figure out...well, something of the world.

The world-building was okay. There were some questions that poked holes in that reality, but nothing major that I can recall. While it wasn't such that I was able to fully imagine this world, it also wasn't so badly done that I didn't care about it or see the characters living in it.

As for the characters, I've already stated that I really liked the character of Syn Caar. She was pretty cool. Xan, though, was a bit of a typical "good" (view spoiler) hero, and I think in romance or erotica, typical is not a very good word to apply to anything (although it's not really bad either). As for the secondary characters, I liked the Commander, I liked Elina and Mhorn, Laithe and Lothen. I did not really like Lee, which is a pity since apparently Book 1, which is her book, would full in some of the background information. I did not find it absolutely necessary to read Book 1 to understand Book 2, but I think that it might have helped.

I also had a bit of a problem with the language, but this is science-fantasy erotica so such language is expected. I think that it wasn't necessary, though. However, my preference is for a science-fantasy tale with a strong romantic element, which wasn't the author's intention.

In short, I really liked the heroine. I thought that the author succeeded in creating a strong heroine who didn't fall apart and depend on the big, strong male in a crisis nor ignored her duties or abused her position in favor of hot sex. The hero was a match for the heroine; he just wasn't very extraordinary. The plot wasn't the best, but it wasn't something that really bothered me. I find the author's writing style to be readable. I was pleasantly surprised to like this book as much as I did. I will be reading Book 1 and I hope there is a Book 3. (less)

This is incredibly striking as you read Veil of Shadows, because instead of a standard hero/heroine dual point-of-view Walker has brought in multiple voices. Shifting among hero, heroine, outcast, enemy, rebel, leader and friend could be chaotic. It could be confusing, but when Walker does it we find ourselves in a robust world with a greater understanding of its struggles.

Most of the story focuses on rebel captain Syn and new rebel soldier Xan. Despite the fall of the gates linking their world to the demon realm, the rebel fighters still have to contend with demons attacking their people and the remaining demon leaders trying to kidnap women with magical skills. The novel gives us glimpses of Kalen and Lee from the first Veil book (read our review), but the main focus of Veil of Shadows is Syn, her attempts to reconnect with the magic left unstable after the fall of the gates and her overwhelming desire for Xan.

In the first Veil book, Through the Veil, we enjoyed the experience of love at first sight (with a good reason for them being immediately enamored). This time, though, we get a more traditional romance building out of need to connect. Both Xan and Syn are hesitant to start anything. They have other goals and don’t need the distraction, but feel so strongly for one another it’s hard to avoid. Plus, what’s life without a little distraction? Or a lot. In the bedroom.

In Veil of Shadows we find people trying to reclaim their lives. Syn, who has long avoided relationships and focused solely on her captain’s duties, finds herself accepting her need for love and for a true connection with Xan. Other women at the rebel base try to reconnect with the magic that makes them feel whole. The exiled demons, left in Ishtan after the gate fell, seek to find a way back home. There are even those who begin this novel with less than favorable intentions only to discover what they really want is something entirely different.

Also, it’s a pretty excellent romance.

Veil of Shadows’ romance had me flying through the pages and the character development made me invest in the outcome. A nice blend of paranormal romance and fantasy. This second book in the Veil series was a cut above its predecessor. (less)

Veil of Shadows is the 2nd book in Walker's Veil series. I read Through the Veil in 2008, so I didn't remember a lot about the storyline. I knew I liked it and was ready to dive back behind the Veil.

Captain Laisyn Caar (or "Syn") (h) and Xan (H) are a fabulous couple. They are both strong warriors determined to do whatever it takes to protect their people and make Ishtar (a realm between Earth and demon realm, Anqar) a safe place again. Shelves: favorites, must-read-series, kick-ass-heroine

I forget how much I loved this series until I just did a reread for an upcoming book battle. Shiloh's books are such an emotional rollercoaster for the reader, that sometimes it can be an exhausting undertaking. The situations are often dark and depressing but her characters always have a spark that cuts through the doom.

Returning to the world of the Veil with the talented Ms. Walker is breath of fresh air. We get to meet our heroes and heroines from before. Time has not been go to them. The men have been a bit mixed up in the head. This story we learn more about the "demon" world. Xan is mysterious and hot. When his past is exposed, I still like him. Laisyn's hang ups seem like much to do about nothing for me. She's kind of irrational in my mind. But, I guess in a war torn world, this is what happens.

I quite enjoyed the book better than the first. I liked Syn and Xan and what a surprise obout Xan....

There was more action in this one and the romance was sooo normal and sweet, you could relate (even if you cant relate to the world).

I have to set this one aside for now. I like the main characters and Shiloh Walker has created a cool world - but - I didn't read book one, and I am really lost. I have stepped into the middle of a lot of action and I really, really think it would have been beneficial if I had read bk one first. Then I think this would have been a pretty cool book :)
