The Taste of Sabbath: How to Delight in God’s Rest was published by Canon Press last year. In the book, Stuart Bryan makes the case for the abiding validity of the Sabbath in our world today.
In the first chapter, he argues that it is a perpetual ordinance because God established it at the creation, God equates it with justice, and God intends it to regulate our worship. The next chapter explains the change from the Jewish Sabbath to the Christian Lord’s Day. Bryan shows that while th...more

This little book is a gem. By examining Scripture, we see that the Sabbath is to be a day of pure delight, a day of celebration. The Lord's day is not to be one focused upon restrictions and what we cannot do, but rather "the things done on the Sabbath should be things that promote life, promote well being, and advance the joy and happiness of men while upholding the honor and worship of God." There is great freedom in Christ Jesus, there is much to celebrate!

Great little book dealing with various "Sabbath issues." Bryan tackles lots of thorny stuff in hear, but not so much that you begin to wonder if the (New) Sabbath really is a delight; or just another theological issue to debate.
I recommend this to anyone who thinks the words "Sabbath" and "delight" should never be used in the same sentence. Most folks in my generation don't even know there is such a thing as a Sabbath, let alone a New Sabbath. This bo...more

A good little introduction to the Sabbath and enjoyable all around. I do think the title is slightly misleading, since the book focuses mostly on how the Sabbath transfers from Old to New covenants rather than technically addressing the book's title, which would seem to indicate a book concerned with practical advice on things to be done on the Sabbath, like feasting, ministries of mercy, worship, etc, which are topics relegated to the final chapter. But still a very good book.
Another short book I read in preparation for a sermon on the Sabbath. Stuart Bryan is also a pastor in my denomination. This book offers some unique argumentation for Sabbath keeping mainly from Isaiah 56 (see verse 4). I found it intriguing and persuasive - a good contribution to the same old proof-texts.
Practical application also abounds in this collection of sermons.

Bryan gets a whole lot done in 100 pages, weaving exegesis and application of a healthy view of the Lord's Day. This is the best succinct book I know of promoting a festive and generous culture that flows from right worship.
For a long time, there has been a great need for a book that will clearly and briefly and winsomely explain Lord's Day celebration to a culture desperately in need of it. This is that book.
very helpful and practical treatment of the Christian Sabbath.
Intelligent, deep, abiding truth on the Sabbath. A clear depth of knowledge of the Scriptures is evident- this is NOT just a rehashing of proof texts; the author deals with Scripture's structure and implication. Highly recommended.
