The Little Red Hen Board Book
by
Byron Barton
A fresh retelling by Byron Barton of the well-loved story of the little red hen who grows grain, threshes wheat, and feeds her chicks--all by herself, without any help from her lazy friends.
Mr. Barton's simple words, bold images, and imaginative use of color have made his many picture book perennial favorites with young children.

Barton's rendition of this classic tale includes a bold, bright palette of colors and drawings reminiscent of child-like compositions. Children will be drawn to the geometric shapes and symmetry present on nearly every page. Text is presented in large font, with only a line or two on each page. Vocabulary is targeted towards kindergarteners and first graders, and the whole book with all of these components would appeal to children of this age group. The moral of the story i...more

Children can learn about the processes that are necessary for food to go from being grown in the ground, to ready to eat on the table. This version of the story differs from the original Little Red Hen since the hen in this tale has three baby chicks. After finding seeds, the hen goes through the process of planting, cutting, threshing, grinding, and baking to make bread. All the while, her friends duck, cat, and pig refuse to help with the work. By the end of the story, the three animals ar...more
I get that this is a moral-of-the-story book, but I still feel like it could have been a more powerful ending if the little red hen had shown compassion + magnanimity toward her friends, instead of having a serves-you-right tone. The little kid loves it, though, and knows most of the text off by heart.
I asked one of our children's librarians to pick out some toddler appropriate fairy tales and mentioned Barton in particular. I didn't know I knew this tale until I started to read it. Its a great one for the very young. It has bold illustrations with familiar farm animals. It has a repetitive structure to follow along or join in. And, it teachers a little moral of the reward of work.
Barton's trademark bold pictures and a classic reselling of the old fairy tale. He breaks up the "no" lines by changing the order the friends say it in, but it makes a bit less smooth to read.
Barton's bright illustrations captivated my short attention span 1 yr old. Or maybe it was just the classic tale that caught her fancy. I will have to try her on another version.
The little red hen finds none of her lazy friends willing to help her plant, harvest, or grind wheat into flour, but all are eager to eat the bread she makes from it.
Mommy calls this "The little vindictive hen" but I don't know what that means. I love it when she quacks and squeals so I make her read this to me all the time.
Lovely children's book about helping. Bright colors and recognizable shapes mean this will be a hit during story time. Will use with threes and fours.
Barton brings his simple and colorful illustrations to this retelling of the classic.
Fun with the kids. Good reminder of the importance to help each other.
Good fit for preschool group
