I was struck by the completely real, unedited voice of a twelve-year old teen that Blume gives us in Deenie, the protagonist of this compelling story. When Deenie discovers her scoliosis and endures the ensuing doctor's visits and eventual casting and wearing of her back brace, Blume perfectly captures Deenie's emotions. On a personal note, I was diagnosed with scoliosis at the same age as Deenie, and cast with a brace, and I could completely relate to every one of Deenie's reactions, from denia...more

This was one of the first Judy Blume books I read as a child, and I laugh now at how I thought Deenie was so old and sophisticated next to how I felt... However, I read this book over and over, because Judy Blume captures how teenagers think and feel, the awkwardness, the shyness, the way we are around our friends, and around boys! She really got it, and this book has readers in a whole new place, somewhere that we didn't know about, a diagnoses of scoliosis. I learned a lot of different things...more

This book is about a teenage girl named Deenie. She has a spinal problem and has to wear a brace. Deenie trys to hide it at first and tries her hardest to take it off but her boyfriend ends up finding out. She gets invited to a party and tries to go behind her father's back and take her brace off but decides not to leaving a "Take me as I am or leave me." attitude with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend ends up liking her as she is and she realizes that she had nothing to worry about.

I like how Judy Blume followed Deenie through her scoliosis, from the diagnosis down to the doctor's visits with details of the medical procedures, like how the brace was made. And Deenie's character development, where she realises she can relate to people like old lady Murray and Barbara and Gena, although that was a little too preachy. I also the development of her relationship with her sister Helen. This book would be m great for young children or preteens with scoliosis or a major illness, o...more

Here's the first sentence:
My mother named me Deenie because right before I was born she saw a movie about a beautiful girl named Wilmadeene, who everybody called Deenie for short.

To my ear at least, that's a flat opening in a flat voice. There is nothing making me want to read further. And that's the voice of the entire novel.

I wonder if this story seemed fresh and groundbreaking back in 1973 when Judy Blume wrote it. Now it seems like a paint-by-numbers plot about a girl coming to terms with a...more

This book is about Deenie, a very beautiful young 13 year old who is forced into the modeling buisness by her mother. As she went to several auditions for modeling agencies, she was always turned down because of bad posture. Soon it was discovered in gym class by her teacher that she might have scoliosis. After she was told that she decided to go to the doctor and was diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Instead of having a surjery to fix this condition she was fitted for a back brac...more

Picked this one up and read it in one evening sitting at the library -- it's a young adult novel that's under 200 pages. I was reading about Banned Books Week, and saw a lot of Blume's books on the list. This one was apparently banned for it's frank discussion of masturbation. Ridiculous. The topic only comes up by name once, and that in the context of girls' gym class discussion with their teacher. She has them write anonymous questions on cards, and then they discuss the answers.

The sad thing...more

"Judy Blume should've prepared me for that."
I totally love that line from the movie Easy A, and because of it I was going to read Judy Blume's books. Then I went to the library to see what they had and this was the only one that looked interesting.
I've never read a book about a character who had scoliosis, so this was an interesting read. It's about Deenie who's in 7th grade and her mother really wants her to be a model. But Deenie isn't so sure she wants to be one, then one day her gym teacher...more

This book is about Deenie Fenner, she has a normal teenage 7th grader life, she has a sister, Helen, and she had a crush. But, she is naturally beautiful and her mom wanted her to be a model and they went to a lot of agencies in which they see if she was right for the position or not. None of them accepted her into modeling because it seemed like she was slouching, so she tried out for cheer-leading at school. One day in PE, her teacher took a look at her back and noticed a slanted position when...more

This book is about a girl who has scoliosis. Her mothers dream was to be a model and now she would like her daughter to have the same dream. When they go to an agency they say that there is something wrong with Dennie’s posture. Her mother blames it on her and keeps telling her to stand up straight. But when Deenie goes from nurse, to doctor, to surgeon, to a scoliosis specialist Deenie has had enough. Her mother though, has repetitively said that it was Deenie fault she laterally can’t take it...more

I read Deenie for my 'Writing for Young Adults' class and it (or she, as I've come to refer to my (photo)copy) is my very first Judy Blume story. Obviously, I did not grow up in America, so my impression of Deenie and her cohorts are going to be colored by my own experience as a Filipino thirteen-year-old, as I'm sure my professor intended it to be.

All in all, Deenie was okay as a character, although sometimes--okay, a lot of the time--I found her reactions to be kind of exaggerated (girl, what...more

The book Deenie is about a girl named Deenie who is in seventh grade. Deenie was named after a famous movie actress, who was very beautiful. It happened to be Deenie was also very beautiful. Her mother who has always been hoping for Deenie to be model suddenly changed. Deenie had really never wanter to be a model, but her mother did and kept taking her to modeling agencies. At these agencies they thought that Deenie had a weird posture, and her mother thought that Deenie was slouching on purpose...more

Thanks to Jeff Dunham I can no longer take the word 'scoliosis' seriously, which made me feel really awful while reading this book, as it's absolutely meant as a serious book! Drat that comedian!

That aside I really liked the book. Judy Blume approached a serious subject that not many people know anything about, and made it accessible for her readers. It's hard not to feel sorry for Deenie - first because of her mother, then because of her condition and her mother's reaction to that condition. At...more

I found Deenie to be a bit of a heart breaking story.

Deenie is a normal young girl. She goes about her life in the way youngesters do. She has a pushy mother who wants her to be a model but other than that she goes to school and spend time with her friends and carries on like a normal almost teenager.

It isn't until she finds out that she has scoliosis that things start to change when she finds out that she will have to wear a back brace for four years. Her mother is devastated and she finds it a...more

Deenie is about a pretty girl, Deenie. She is pretty and wants to be a model. Her mother is a strong supporter. Deenie always practices and has auditions but fails. A juror tells her “your back is not straight.” So, she meets a doctor and the doctor said it is scoliosis. Scoliosis is when the spine is curved. As a result, pretty Deenie has to wear a brace for four years.

While reading this book, I made a text-to-world connection. She is like my older sister. Recently, she got braces on her teeth....more

A breezy read, flowing narratives, with subtle emotional twist & profound message, as a side personal effect, woke me up from slouched sitting.

Deenie, a not so typical teenager. The fate of the character she was named after foreshadowed the life event she was set out to find out.

At the beginning of the book, I sensed a somewhat faint voice and often muted resistance to her surroundings. Her mom dragged her around town to model agencies, in order to fulfill the vision of her being a pretty...more

This is a great book about a girl overcoming a physical limitation. Deenie is a sweet girl who deals with a lot of common issues to junior high kids: boys, friends, fitting in, peer pressure, but on top of all that she discovers that she has scoliosis and has to be fitted with a brace. This changes everything, or at least, it seems like it will, but thankfully life goes on and all that changes is her perspective. Her relationships with her parents are key to this story, especially her with mothe...more

This is a young adult novel written in the 70's about a 13 year old girl who finds out she has scoliosis and must wear a brace for the next four years. The book also deals with parental expectations. Deenie, who is the main character, is very pretty and her mother constantly pushes her to become a model. Mom has also decided that Deenie's older sister is smart so she should focus exclusively on academics. Dad is more laid back and encourages mom to ease up on the girls. There's a little romance...more

This is a book about a girl with scoliosis. What?! Those exist?! I'm a 23 year old girl who has scoliosis and was told I had to wear a brace at age 13 unfortunately for me, my curve was too bad for a brace and I had to have surgery. I have two metal bars in my back and when I was 15 I had to have corrective surgery because one of the bars fell off.

I wish I knew about this book at 13. I felt alone and a lot of self pity during my days at home and this book could have helped me.

I found this as a...more

After gym one day, her gym teacher notices that her posture is crooked and she recommends that Deenie go see a doctor. This was a great story of a young girl trying to fit in at school while being pulled along by her mothers vision of her future. Deenie isn't sure that she wants to be a model, but she does have the face for it. Deenie's mother is trying to get her into the modeling world at age 13 when a PE teacher notices something funny about the way she is walking. Our young protagonist goes on to see multiple doctors who ultimately lead her to a solution that could change her entire life.

Judy Blume rocks. She confronts pre-teen anger issues over scoliosis back-braces and frankly tackles discussions of masturbation. Judy Blume talked about the things young kids wanted to know about but no one else was ballsy enough to bring up.

This was the first book I read by Judy Blume, I was impressed, the blurb didn't really hook me but as I got into the story I loved it!
I thought the story was very exciting and I felt a connection with the characters, the story being very relatable that is.
I would recommend this book to young teenage girls, it deals with problems that sometimes we find it hard to talk about.
The only criticism I have about this book is the sudden ending, I felt the author could have finished a lovely story of...more

Judy Blume spent her childhood in Elizabeth, New Jersey, making up stories inside her head. She has spent her adult years in many places doing the same thing, only now she writes her stories down on paper. Adults as well as children will recognize such Blume titles as: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret; Blubber; Just as Long as We're Together; and the five book series about the irrepressible Fu...more
