I was struck by the completely real, unedited voice of a twelve-year old teen that Blume gives us in Deenie, the protagonist of this compelling story. When Deenie discovers her scoliosis and endures the ensuing doctor's visits and eventual casting and wearing of her back brace, Blume perfectly captures Deenie's emotions. On a personal note, I was diagnosed with scoliosis at the same age as Deenie, and cast with a brace, and I could completely relate to every one of Deenie's reactions, from denial to anger to resistence and so on. I'm glad, though, that I didn't read this book when I was twelve and dealing with scoliosis. As strong as Deenie's voice is, I was frustrated by how much I could hear Blume's voice in the background, and felt the authorial intent was too obvious in some of the lessons Deenie learned through her ordeal. For example: at the beginning of the book Deenie is repulsed by Old Lady Murray, a hunchbacked woman who sells newspapers on the corner near Deenie's home, and Barbara Curtis, a girl in Deenie's gym class whom she calls Creeping Crud because of her excema. Deenie, on the other hand, is a pretty girl accustomed to getting the attention of boys, and confident in a future career as a model. When the scoliosis appears, it seems to come as a punishment for her attitudes toward the less-than-perfect, and ends up compelling her to befriend those with physical disabilities. I didn't appreciate there being such an obvious, practically self-imposed reason for Deenie to experience her scoliosis. Another area of dispointment for me was the treatment of Deenie's mother, Mrs. Fenner. The way Mrs. Fenner tries to control Deenie, and her immature reaction to the scoliosis are both terrible. In the end she tries to justify her behavior by telling her daughter: "I wanted better for you . . . Better than what I had myself." This statement is not surprising, but it hasn't been established earlier in the book. If we were to see more of this dimension of Mrs. Fenner's life she would be a richer, perhaps even more tragic character, rather than the monster she plays throughout.(less)

This was one of the first Judy Blume books I read as a child, and I laugh now at how I thought Deenie was so old and sophisticated next to how I felt... However, I read this book over and over, because Judy Blume captures how teenagers think and feel, the awkwardness, the shyness, the way we are around our friends, and around boys! I like how Judy Blume followed Deenie through her scoliosis, from the diagnosis down to the doctor's visits with details of the medical procedures, like how the brace was made. I also the development of her relationship with her sister Helen. This book would be m great for young children or preteens with scoliosis or a major illness, or those who know someone who does.

But one thing that struck me about this book is that Deenie's emotions or reactions aren't described. There's nothing about how she feels or what she thinks. I noticed it particularly in the chapter where she's getting the brace made. There's long descriptions of what happens, from being wrapped in the plaster, to the doctor telling her what to do, and wanting the plaster changed, etc. But you don't see Deenie being nervous or wondering what's going on, or feeling uncomfortable being held in the equipment in such an awkward position, or thinking that it's taking a long time. Her only reaction is being embarrassed that they're touching her body while creating the mould. She thinks, "I didn't like it at all when he had to smooth out the strips (with his hands) across my chest." But there's absolutely nothing else besides that. I would have expected that a 13-year-old would squirm or at least flinch away, but Deenie doesn't DO anything.

Or how about the scene where Barbara helps her with her shoes? There's just a description of their conversation, and Deenie thinks "I felt like the world's biggest jerk". But there's nothing about how she feels about Barbara doing the shoe laces for her. Does she feel embarrassed that she can't do them herself, and that someone else has to do it for her like she's a little kid (something that I've heard a lot of preteens complaining about when they have to wear a brace)? Does she resent Barbara's interference? Does she feel grateful for Barbara's help? Nothing. In fact, when I read that paragraph, I expected her to react the same way she did when Helen offered to help her with the pad, like "I can do it myself". That was her attitude at first -"Don't treat me like a freak". But there was nothing to indicate that she didn't feel like that about Barbara's offer to help. Just that one line about feeling like the world's greatest jerk. I was actually surprised when she picked Barbara for a partner later, indicating that they became friends. I thought she would resent Barbara for butting in.

The book is filled with such scenarios, but I don't want to go through it again listing them all. It gave me the sense that I didn't understand Deenie. I couldn't quite connect with her because of this.(less)

Picked this one up and read it in one evening sitting at the library -- it's a young adult novel that's under 200 pages. I was reading about Banned Books Week, and saw a lot of Blume's books on the list. This one was apparently banned for it's frank discussion of masturbation. Ridiculous. The topic only comes up by name once, and that in the context of girls' gym class discussion with their teacher. She has them write anonymous questions on cards, and then they discuss the answers.

"Judy Blume should've prepared me for that."
I totally love that line from the movie Easy A, and because of it I was going to read Judy Blume's books. Then I went to the library to see what they had and this was the only one that looked interesting.

I read Deenie for my 'Writing for Young Adults' class and it (or she, as I've come to refer to my (photo)copy) is my very first Judy Blume story. Obviously, I did not grow up in America, so my impression of Deenie and her cohorts are going to be colored by my own experience as a Filipino thirteen-year-old, as I'm sure my professor intended it to be.

All in all, Deenie was okay as a character, although sometimes--okay, a lot of the time--I found her reactions to be kind of exaggerated (girl, what...more I read Deenie for my 'Writing for Young Adults' class and it (or she, as I've come to refer to my (photo)copy) is my very first Judy Blume story. All in all, Deenie was okay as a character, although sometimes--okay, a lot of the time--I found her reactions to be kind of exaggerated (girl, what is so wrong with an undershirt?) but what do I know? I don't have scoliosis and I imagine it must be really hard to have to deal with that at thirteen, especially since she's been programmed all her life to think that she was going to be a model. That part I could relate to, since I was a thirteen-year-old Helen. (Sidebar: I liked that Helen wasn't the annoying, bully older sister. Her relationship with Deenie was nice to read about.) Still though, Deenie got kind of grating at times, but I liked that she found herself somewhat at the end.

Also, I'm sorry, but Buddy's a jerk. And I absolutely hated that Deenie still likes him. Maybe I've been fed too much young and happy puppy love stories, but ugh, from that first scene in the cinema, I really did not like him at all. (view spoiler) I can't even.

The other characters were fine, I guess, but while I was reading, I couldn't help thinking 'oh, this kid will probably grow up to be the flirty cheerleader/social outcast/jerky jock.' It's like the birth of all the teen novel tropes.

The stuff about sex and masturbation seemed kind of out of place in the whole novel, but I don't know, I guess that needs to be there to emphasize that she's growing up. I couldn't be more grateful that the internet didn't exist in the seventies and so Deenie couldn't just google her questions and find way more than she was looking for. It's nice to think that gym class discussions existed once upon a time. I agree; they're way more important than modern dance.

So yeah, Deenie. Interesting stuff.(less)

There he said that there was something wrong with her spine and she had a curve in her back called scoliosis. Finally Deenie was sent to a scoliosis doctor and there Deenie had to decide if she wanted to have a surgery or a Milwaukee Brace. Deenie did want to have a surgery because her friends Midge and Janet had bought her a cute nightgown to wear at the hospital. But her mother did not want Deenie to have a surgery. Deenie was terrified she didn't anyone to ever see her with a brace on. Deenie really did struggle with the brace and thought she rather die. Deenie did go through rough times with her family, friends, and herself. But Deenie does have such a strong character that she survived through all the pain.

I really enjoyed reading Deenie, I think this book because its easy to relate to. I know that I never had scoliosis but one of my friends did and just as in the book Janet and Midge had to really support Deenie to make her feel better. I also like this book because I'm around Deenie's age and she goes through the same thing all girls do. Deenie really did go through a lot of issues with her family. Luckily I don't get into such issues with my family, but it was easy to understand. Deenie was a great book and I recommend it strongly.(less)

Thanks to Jeff Dunham I can no longer take the word 'scoliosis' seriously, which made me feel really awful while reading this book, as it's absolutely meant as a serious book! Drat that comedian!

A breezy read, flowing narratives, with subtle emotional twist & profound message, as a side personal effect, woke me up from slouched sitting.

This is a great book about a girl overcoming a physical limitation. Deenie is a sweet girl who deals with a lot of common issues to junior high kids: boys, friends, fitting in, peer pressure, but on top of all that she discovers that she has scoliosis and has to be fitted with a brace. This is a book about a girl with scoliosis. What?! Those exist?! I'm a 23 year old girl who has scoliosis and was told I had to wear a brace at age 13 unfortunately for me, my curve was too bad for a brace and I had to have surgery. I have two metal bars in my back and when I was 15 I had to have corrective surgery because one of the bars fell off.

This was a great story of a young girl trying to fit in at school while being pulled along by her mothers vision of her future. Deenie isn't sure that she wants to be a model, but she does have the face for it. This story is a book that every teen can realte too. It includes themes that intrest the reader. Deenie's realization that she has scoliosis causes you to feel for her. Imagine carrying a metal brace on your back for four whole years and the constant struggle to fit in with people who will accept who you are and your differences. Deenie shuns her hopes of becoming a model when she is older because it is not her dream but her mothers. In the end of the book Deenie realizes that she can't help who she is now and you can either take her or leave her. Her confidence sky rocketts at the end of the book.

This book is touching and persuades you to want to read more so that you can see how Deenie deals with her disability. The fast moving story is touching as well as mesmorizing. The fact that Deenie's mom tries to control both her daughters lives are amazing to read beacause she puts so much pressure on them and doesn't allow them to make their own decsions.

I would recommend Deenie by Judy Blume books to anyone who want's to read an emotional story with great themes. The author Judy Blume writes in a way that keeps the reader so attached to the story. It's intresting to read how Deenie copes with her disability, and how her reaction to her dissability changes from the beginning of the book to the end. This was the first book I read by Judy Blume, I was impressed, the blurb didn't really hook me but as I got into the story I loved it!
I thought the story was very exciting and I felt a connection with the characters, the story being very relatable that is.
I would recommend this book to young teenage girls, it deals with problems that sometimes we find it hard to talk about.
The only criticism I have about this book is the sudden ending, I felt the author could have finished a lovely story of...more
